Hi Julie, and welcome to the site.
If your male was neutered by castration, a complete removal of the testicals, he can no longer produce sperm so your female should be safe. If you have any doubts, it would be a good idea to call your vet to make sure. That said, you still might want to curtail the breeding activity because it may put undue stress on your dog's stitches.
Thanks for your question. :)
-- Contributed by: KellyI see all the info about the 3 week cycle. My female beagle is in week 2, presenting, flagging, discharge clearish, not eating. Problem - male beagle got fixed 4 days ago and he's in love!! Can he get her pregnant? Does neutering work immediately? We were up for hours last night with kenneled howling beagles. Not fun! PS My older neutered male looks at them like their both insane!!
-- Contributed by: JulieHi Maggie,
Your vet may want to wait until your dog's milk has dried up before proceeding with the spaying, but it wouldn't hurt to call and make an appointment a month in advance. You can explain your dog's recent pregnancy and let the vet make the decision on whether or not it's alright to go ahead and spay now.
Thanks for your question, and best wishes for a long and happy life with your new companion. :)
-- Contributed by: KellyI just got my dog and I was wondering how soon I could have her spayed. She had a litter of puppies about 10 weeks ago. I picked her up last Sunday and while I was there her last puppy was still nursing. Do I need to wait awhile to get her spayed?
Thanks Maggie
-- Contributed by: MaggieHi Sam,
Let me make sure I understand you. You've been checking her to see if she's coming into season. You haven't noticed any blood, but today you see a color change on the tissue. What color is it? If it's yellow-tinged then it's most likely urine left on the vulva after she relieved herself. If it's pink-tinged then it could be the very first sign of her starting a heat cycle.
If this is the case, you'll probably see an increase in bloody discharge shortly as the season gets under way. Check her again later today to see if there is more discharge. You should also check her vulva for swelling since this is another body change most bitches go through during heat. I recommend you read our article on Dog Heat Cycle and Breeding for more info.
Thanks for your question, and good luck with her training!
