Hi Kyle, and welcome to the site.

You should always be careful when considering switching a dog to a different brand of food. The most important thing is to take a look at the protein sources in the brand you're using now. Is any form of corn listed in the first five ingredients? If so, it's being used as one of the main protein sources. The problem with this is that corn is hard for dogs to digest. Real named meats and meat meals are far better sources of protein. You also want to avoid a brand that uses meat by-products for their protein source. By-products are what's left of the carcass after the real meat has been removed. Finally, chemical preservatives may cause cancer, so it's better to avoid brands that use BHA, BHT or ethoxyquin to preserve freshness. Go back and check your brand's label again. If you are satisfied with what you see in the ingredients list, there may be no need to switch at all. This is a decision each dog owner must make for him or herself. :)

Hi Lezlie, and welcome to the site.

Check the ingredients list on Nutro Natural choice. Does it list real named meat sources within the first few ingredients on the list? Does it use natural preservatives such as vitamins E and C rather than BHT, BHA or eythoxyquin? Finally, is there an absence of grain fillers? These are important things to base your decision on before you give the brand a try. :)

I am currently feeding Eukanuba Labrador Retriever brand to my 4-year old lab with not many issues? What would be a good reason to switch from this to the California Natural? CN has fewer ingrediants but I can't find much else? I have also tried GreenTripe and he did VERY well on that. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

HOW DOES NUTRO NATURAL CHOICE COMPARE TO OTHER FOOD? IS IT A GOOD ONE?

Hi James,

I don't know which dog foods Andrew Lewis recommends, but LTK's list is not drawn from any other list. We compiled this list by assessing each brand on it's protein source and lack of known harmful chemical additives. The brands that made our cut went into the list, but there are probably more that met would meet our criteria.

Thanks for your question. :)

Actually Connie, I hate to say this but, Iams is one of the worst dog food brands today. Feeding your dog iams is the equivalent to feeding your kids mc donalds everyday. I didn't say it, researchers discovered it. But don't feel bad, you didn't know. I'd recommend california natural. I got a 5lb bag for 12 bucks which is not all that bad plus it's one of the top nine dog foods! :)

Are these the top 9 dog foods andrew lewis recommended?

Hi Connie,

I've never used this product, but here's the only review I could find.

DogFoodAnalysis.com

I have to say, I share the same concerns about the protein source and so much corn meal. Based on the ingredient list, I wouldn't choose it for my own pet.

I live in a small town in Idaho. I drive a distance and buy Iams proactive for my puppy. He is 3.5 months old. How does this food rate?

Hi I've read good things about Life's Abundance - Premium Health Food For Your Dog-- my only concern is that i have a Maltese and I was wondering since his eyes are always staining if it was a good choice??

  • Hi Tatiana,

Examine the kibble to see how much coloring it contains. Check the bag to see how many dyes are used. The less added color, the better. This will lessen the amount of staining around the mouth.

Eye staining is a slightly different issue. It's mainly caused by bacterial growth that takes place in the moist environment left by the tearing.

If your dog's eyes tear excessively, you should have your vet examine them. Sometimes the tearing is cause by a set of eyelashes the grow in the inner corner of the lids.

Thanks for your question.

Hi, I use Wysong products particularly the Archetype burgers, and I like Dr Wysong's website. I also have started using Merrick dog food and Evanger's. All seem healthy. I tried Timberwolf for my dogs, and both of them had a horrible reaction to the kibble - heart palpitations, panting. There are just so many different ingredients in it that it's difficult to pinpoint which one is causing such a terrible reaction. Do you have any comments on the foods I've mentioned? Many thanks.

Hi Denise,

You are not the first person to report liking the Wysong brand. If your dog is doing well on it, then stick with it. As for Ennova and Merrick, I'm not as familiar with those brands. However, it is a wise decision to rotate brands to make sure your dog is getting all the nutrition it needs.

There were simply hundreds of brands to sift through and not enough hours to do it. The brands that we did choose to list met the criteria set forth in this article, but there could be many more so check those labels carefully whenever you're thinking of trying a new food.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Best wishes!

Hi Alice,

I'm glad you found a food that fits the healthy profile. There were simply so many foods to examine. I'm sure we'll hear from other dog owners whose favorite kibble didn't make the list either. Thank you for sharing your opinion about Eagle Pack. Sharing info is what this channel is all about.

Curious why Eagle Pack Holistic Dry was not included in the top ten list? Has everything you talk about and uses human grade ingredients w/tocopherols as perservative. My dog (very weak stomach) switches between the fish and duck and is finally stabilized and happy. Is there a problem with this food??
