Hi Colin,
It does sound as though your dog could have ingested something toxic. I'm not sure if a vet would have been able to reverse the situation in time, but it's always best to rush to a vet when symptoms are extreme. I'm truly sorry for your loss.
-- Contributed by: Kelly4.00pm excessive drooling (saturated neck-pools on floor) walking, walking, unable to settle. 3-30am could not lie down without pain. 4-20am laid down in pain 4 42 am- extreem forthing at mouth until unable to inhale and sufficated.
-- Contributed by: ColinHi Robin,
Oh how awful. I so sorry to hear what you and your pets are going through. This does sound a bit suspicious, but I can't really speculate much further except to say make sure your vet checks for warfarin (not sure I spelled that right); it's a blood thinner that is the main ingredient in rat poison. This doesn't mean someone fed it to your dog on purpose, but if someone had some set out for rats, the dogs may have got into it accidentally. I truly hope this isn't the case.
Please let us know what you find out, and I'll keep your Gordon in my prayers.
-- Contributed by: KellyThis morning we woke (5.30am) to find our Springer Spaniel dead on our verandah and our Gordon Setter very sick. The dogs sleep on the verandah and don't get let out till daylight. Rang the vet and took them in straight away. So far Cane toad, Snake bite, tick and accidental poisoning have been ruled out with the Springer. Right now the vets are checking for a Tick with the Gordon Setter. To me it seems very sus that both young healthy dogs would come down in this way at the same time? They were both fine at 10.00pm last night when my husband came to bed. The symptoms are violent vomiting, shaky legs, loss of bowel and bladder control. bleeding in the lungs So any ideas? Our 14mth old springer died a terribly painful death. I breaks my heart to think it could have been deliberate. We need answers so if anyone has ideas please share them with me.
regards Robin

I'm so sorry to hear what your family is going through. I really can only offer one thought. You mentioned poisoning. If you have rat poison set out anywhere, your dog might have gotten into it. Rat poison contains a blood thinner that causes massive internal bleeding. It might be a wise idea to bring up this possibility with your vet. I hope something can be done to save your dog. Good luck.

-- Contributed by: TaylorHi Cindy,
I'm so sorry to hear about what happened to your dog. It's hard to lose a pet so suddenly. You would need to ask your vet to perform an immediate necropsy to determine the cause of death, and a toxicology report would reveal if there was poison in your dog's system at the time of death. I truly hope this isn't the case. These same symptoms (with the exception of the yellow tongue) are sometimes noted with an advanced case of heartworm, so that's another possible cause to consider.
Thank you for sharing your situation, and I'm so sorry for your loss.
-- Contributed by: Kellymy dog started vomiting, drooling, not playing with the kids.her tongue hanging out,she later passed on 7/4/09 we suspet poisoning by the neghbors we caught them trying to give our other dog meat that looked to be coated with something, also our dogs tongue was yellow and hanging out when she passed, could it be poisoning?
-- Contributed by: cindyHi Jenni,
I'm so sorry to hear about your dog's passing. The best way to truly find out what caused your dog's death is to have the vet do a necropsy. Beyond that, it's all specualtion unless your vet took blood samples that could confirm rat poison in your dog's body. I'm sorry I can't be more specific than that, but please accept my condolences on your loss.
-- Contributed by: KellyOur family pet passed away yesterday on Sat 2/28/09. He was somewhat "under the weather" the past few days but started to fall ill early Sat. morning. He was a mini schnauzer and only 4 yrs old, and was throwing up all day. He would drink a ton of water like never before and quickly vomit. Then suddendly, he started bleeding through his rectum. It wasn't spotting, it was pretty severe. He was rushed to the vet and they "diagnosed" that he had injested poison- rat poison. We beg to differ. We have nooo idea how that may be. There are not rats nor poision in the house or backyard. We make sure the house is clean because my son (18 mnths) plays all over the house. He (the dog)mainly stays indoors. Within hours of coming home from the vet, he sadly passed on. I am still doubting it was poison and want to seek other conclusions. Any adivce? Another thing, he went for his routine vaccinations earlier in the week- could they have possibly have any effect on the dog?
-- Contributed by: JenniHello L. Hoffman,
I'm so sorry to hear about what happened to your dog. It would indeed be a terrible cruelty, not to mention criminal, if someone gave rat poison to your dog on purpose. I truly hope that isn't the case. That said, sometimes dogs and cats eat dead rodents that ingested the poison elsewhere, and the pets receive the poison that is still present in the rodent's system. It's very unfortunate, but it does happen sometimes, and it's difficult to watch a dog every moment he's outside.
I know there is little that can ease your grief at this time, but I hope raising the very real possibility that this could have been a genuine accident offers you a little comfort. You have my sincere sympathy on your loss.
-- Contributed by: KellyMy sons dog was poisioning and died yesterday. We had had this dog for about 15 yrs. The vet said that the dog was given rat poisioning. I think who ever gives any animal any kind of poisioning is cruel.
-- Contributed by: L.HoffmanHi Margaret,
I'm so sorry to hear about what happened. It's difficult to say what the cause of the reaction was, but a necropsy could reveal more info. Yes, a snake bite could have been the cause of such a sudden and violent reaction, especially if your area is known to harbor poisonous snakes, but the vet would be able to find a bite mark if that's the case. It's also possible that there was something toxic in the run off from the ditch. Without a necropsy, you'll never be sure about what happened. Under the cir...stances, it would be wise to keep your dog away from that particular area.
Please pass my condlences along to your neighbor. It's a heartbreaking situation.
-- Contributed by: KellyMy dog was walking around the block w/ our neighors dog (Lab) We've had lots of rain lately and the ditches are full with run/off water. We live in a very secluded wooded and very rocky area. Neighbors dog (lab) loves water and jumped into a ditch revene like, on her back and just rolled over in the water. She came out of the ditch, shook and we resumed walking. Suddenly I looked back and this dog was shaking, nervous and seemed be having a problem breathing. We turned around and headed back home and this dog was wobbling, shaking and convulsvie like siezures. What could have been in that ditch to cause this violent reaction. ??? She died at the vets office due to delayed treatment for over an hr while these symptoms were being manifested. The dog last stage laid down in my yard and tried violently to get back up, but could not!! Please respond asap. Thank you... Snake???? does it affect a dog this viollently. ???
-- Contributed by: MargaretHi Francine,
I'm sorry to hear about what happened. It sounds as though the peroxicide burned her mouth tissue and then the stomach acid irritated it further. You might want to ask your vet how long that will take to heal.
For now, your dog needs very soft and bland nutrition that won't hurt her mouth unnecessarily. You might try a combination of cooked ground beef, brown rice and cottage cheese. I think that will be soft enough, and hopefully tempting enough to coax your dog to eat. Be sure to keep fresh cool water available for her too.
Hopefully your dog will begin to feel better in a few days. Best wishes.
-- Contributed by: KellyMy dog ate rat poison. I gave her perioxcide to make her vomit. She did I took her to the vet next day. They gave her a vitamin k shot. But her mouth seems to be sore and she cant eat. She is only a 3.4 lb chihuahua. What can I give her?
-- Contributed by: HElp!!!!!Steven,
The very best advice I can give is to take your dog to the emergency vet right away. Dehydration can lead to death, and it sounds as though your dog may be dangerously dehydrated at this point. Please don't delay.
Best wishes for your dog's recovery.
-- Contributed by: KellyHello my american pit bull is not eating and throwing up constantly she will drink water but it will come back up about in about 15 minutes or she will throw up as soon as she wakes up through the night or in the morning this has gone on for a little over a week or so she will not eat anything we were thinking that i t may have been parvo but it has been too long for that. now we just tried to give her brother something to eat and now he does not want to eat i love my dogs and i need some help please
-- Contributed by: StevenHi Leah,
If you used a spot-on product like Frontline or one of the other brands, go ahead and wash it off using dish soap and rinse thoroughly. Some dogs are very sensitive to these products, and I once had a Standard Poodle collapse shortly after the product was applied. We washed her right away and she began to feel better very quickly.
If this doesn't help your dog, I think it would be worth a visit to the emergency vet. Breathing problems should always be treated seriously.
Thanks for your question, and I hope your dog will be alright.
-- Contributed by: KellyMy 12 yr old border collie is vomiting and seems to have breething problems he wants me to let him out but I am afraid to. -- Contributed by: sheriHi Shannon,
I think it would be wise to call your vet right away. This medication could produce a reaction, so try to ascertain how many your dog might have eaten. Let the vet know the strength of the pills too. The vet will advise you on the best course of action from there.
Best wishes.
