Hi Gina,

There's a better than average chance that your female will become pregnant, but it's not certain. I think you'll find the info in the following articles helpful.

Once you've read through the material, don't hesitate to come back with more questions. :)

I saw my male chihuahua tie with another chihuahua and my question is, would he mate with her if she was not in heat?? I do not know this dog to know if she was going through her cycle or not. I see her all the time and I am going to tell the owners but I just wanted to know that answer. Thank you

HI MY NAME IS BEN AND I HAVE A 10/MONTH OLD FEMALE PITBUL AND SHE'S ABOUT TO COME INTO HER FIRST HEAT CYCLY MY QUESTION IS THAT IF I MATE HER WOULD IT CAUSE HER ANY INJURY'S THE REASON I ASK BECAUSE I'VE FOUND A NICE STUD I DON'T NO HOW LONG THE PERSON IS GOING TO HAVE HIM HE IS A 3 YEAROLD AMERICAN PULLDOG THAT HAS NEVER MATED WHAT IS YOUR OPINION

  • Hi Ben,

I make it a practice never to breed a bitch that is less than a year old. This gives her time to mature physically as well as mentally before she has to meet the demands of a litter. This will lessen the amount of stress her body will go through meeting the demands of her growing puppies. I would wait until her next season before I bred her. I'm sure you'll be able to find a suitable stud when the time is right.

Thanks for your question. :)

I have a 4 lb female maltese who is about 5-6 yrs old! She has never been breed. She went into heat and i took her to a friends house who has a very small male poodle, they did tie but only one time for about 20 mins! do u think she could get preg with only one tie and what is the %rate?

  • Hi Dawn,

The percentage of any bitch becoming pregnant after a breeding is 50 percent. That said, a 20 minute tie will probably be sufficient if both dogs are fertile and the breeding took place in time to catch the eggs she would have been releasing.

Good luck!

hi, i have done my research so i do not want you to get worried and think i have been an irresponsible pety owner but i have two male cavalier king chaler spaniels and one female cavalier king charles they all have their papers and so on and i wanted to breed her to one. the boys did not seem the least bit interested in her so i used my sisters dog who is same breed and has papers he seemed to know what to do but when he mounted her he would not penetrste and would just thrust into thin air while on her. i left my sister watching while i had to go to work. when i came back she said she hadnt kept an eye on them but heard the female whining. my question is: do female whine when being mated as my sister did not observe properly and i am a bit angry as i wanted to know for sure. thank you it has been 10 days since this happened. would the firrst sign i see be the nipples enlarging. i have bred persian cats mostly but wanted to start cavaliers.

  • Hi Thomas,

Some maiden bitches do indeed whine or yelp when a tie is established. This isn't a guarantee that a proper mating took place, but I would be encouraged by it. You can ask your vet to perform a blood test about two weeks after your bitch's cycle ends to see if she is pregnant.

In the meantime, you might enjoy reading some of our articles on this topic.

Thanks for your question, and good luck!

Hi i have one question. I have a beagle and we are trying to mate her with a pug. We put them in a room together for well over 2 hours. I was just wondering what are some signs to show that they have mated? It would be great if you could reply. Thank you!

  • Hi Jean,

I personally don't ascribe to that method of mating for two reasons.

First, just as you're experiencing, you can't witness the breeding and be sure it has taken place. There is very little evidence after the fact.

Second, some bitches can become quite nasty during the breeding, and it is possible for one or both dogs to become injured.

If it's not too late in your bitch's cycle, I recommend that you carry out a supervised breeding. This way you can be sure what has taken place, and assist the dogs if necessary.

Thanks for your question.

Just a quick question. What would cause a male dog not to be able to tie longer then a few seconds? My male has tied with me female 4 times but no longer the a few seconds. As soon as he releases, she really acts upset and tried to make him mount her again. He is smaller then her and this is his first time so I am assuming that he is not mature enought or big enought to hold the tie but mostly I was wondering if she could still be pregnant even if the tie lasted a few seconds? I appreciate you reply to these questions.

  • Hi Julie,

It's very possible that your bitch will take from this breeding. A tie isn't necessary to ensure fertilization, but it's a little added insurance when one happens.

I suspect your male may not have time to achieve a full tie before your bitch pulls away. He will probably be more adept at breeding the next time you use him for stud.

Good luck!
