Hi Sunny,
It really does sound as though your dog has been affected by something she ate. If there was grizzle/fat on the bone, this richness might have temporarily upset your dog's digestive system. However, there's a possibility that she ate something else you don't know about. If she isn't returning to normal over the next 24 hours, you'll want to call your vet for an appointment. In the meantime, make sure your dog is still drinking plenty of water, and withhold food for that same period to give things a chance to settle down. When a dog experiences diarrhea, every meal puts pressure on the colon to release prematurely, and this results in watery stools because the colon hasn't had time to extract the extra water from them.
Thanks for sharing your situation, and I do hope your dog is feeling better very soon.
-- Contributed by: KellyHi, I live in Alaska and it was just Thanksgiving. I have a cross-breed Border Collie/Aussie mix and she doesn't get as much exercise now as she usually does in the summer. However, we do walk her each day, let her out regularly, as needed and play with her each day. Last night she was whining at the door and pacing, which is not normal. She sleeps through the night normally. When I got up to take her out I saw that she had a bowel movement inside the house that had some discoloration to it. It was firm, but had a white-ish tint to it, faded to green then brown. Later she had diahreeah. I was concerned that the bone from the Prime Rib we had at Thanksgiving could have caused this. Otherwise, she has a pretty normal diet and is regular. Today she still has the loose stools that were yellowish in color. Any thoughts? Coincidentally, we have human flu symptoms going around the house. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
-- Contributed by: SunnyHi Monique,
I can't be sure of what's going on, but there's a possibility that these two issues are unrelated but going on at the same time. As for the vomiting and lack of appetite, I think it's worth consulting your vet about. As for the doggie door, I would thoroughly explore the area around the outside of it for signs of a wild animal taking up residence nearby. Sometimes raccoons and woodchucks will take up residence under a deck, porch or crawl space, and they tend to scare/upset family pets when they do. It's definitely worth checking into.
Thanks for your question, and I hope these suggestions prove helpful.
-- Contributed by: KellyHi - my dog vomited up all his food the other night and has been very timid and quiet since and still wont eat much - he also seems to be scared of his doggy door at the moment - do you have any idea why this could be - nothing major has changed??
-- Contributed by: MoniqueHi, my dog has been less active lately. She's coughing and has horrible breath. It likes she keeps gagging and getting choked up, like a cat does with a hairball. She has been sleeping all day which is very unusual for her. Normally she is so hyper. I;m really worried? What should i do?
- Hi Jade,
The symptoms you describe could be attributed to kennel cough, a common virus that many dogs pick up. Typically, it's not too serious and usually clears up in two to three weeks. However, sometimes secondary respiratory infections can set in, so it's a good idea to keep a close eye on the situation.
I'd like you to check out our article on Home Treatment for Kennel Cough. It explains more about the virus, when you should seek veterinary help and ways to help your dog at home.
Thanks for your question, and don't hesitate to take your dog to the vet if the symptoms get any worse.
-- Contributed by: Jademy dog is 3 months old and it wont eat or drink and it looks really sick and it also has diarhea and throwing up bubbles like slime
- Hi Bobby
The combination of vomiting, diarrhea and refusing to drink water is a dangerous recipe for dehydration. I think it's very important to take your dog to the vet right away, because severe dehydration will cause your dog's organs to shut down and this will lead to death. If needed the vet can give your dog a subquetaneous injection of saline to help rehydrate it, but your dog may actually require IV fluid if faster rehydration is needed.
Thanks for your question, and I hope your puppy recovers quickly.
-- Contributed by: bobbyMy dog seems to be a little under the weather, she looks absolutely pitiful! One friend said his vet recommended childrens motrin when his dog got "sick". But my vet said that it is unsafe. I want to give her pain relief. Are there any over the counter drugs (like a "tylenol" for dogs) that can help her?
- Hi Nikki,
You most definitely never want to give a dog Motrin/ibuprofen. It can really damage the stomach and liver. You also need to be sure whether your dog actually needs a pain reliever, and if you believe she does, you need to find out what's causing that pain. Honestly, I recommend giving your vet a call. He may want to examine her, but he may also be willing to give advice about over-the-counter drugs and dosages based on your dog's symptoms.
Thanks for your question, and best wishes for your dog's quick recovery.
-- Contributed by: NikkiHi my dog has been dry heaving, and has a constant urge to urinate (keeps squating but doesn't go), when she did go the 1st time their was a little bit of blood, she had a splotchy on/off menstral cycle that still may be going on, last night she ate an abnormal amount of dog food, do I need to take her in to the vet, or wait it out? 2 year old Akita Female
- Hi Monique,
With so many symptoms, I think it would be wise to take your dog to the vet as soon as possible. She could have a kidney stone causing the straining and bleeding. This could also be the cause of the nausea. I'd take her in right away.
Thanks for you question, and I hope your dog is soon on the road to recovery.
-- Contributed by: MoniqueMy 15yr old dog is diarheaing yellow and blood, she is drinking but won't eat? Have any ideas?
- Hi Deb,
This could be severe bowel infection. I think the best thing you can do is take a sample to your vet for analysis and let the vet examine your dog to determine the cause. This way, you can get medicine to correct the situation.
Thanks for your question, and I hope your dog is feeling better soon.
-- Contributed by: DebMy dog gracie has been drooling. Like a leaking faucet. She was playing outside in the snow. we thought at first she just ate some salt off her paws and gave her a bath. But it's been 4 hours and she's still drooling. She's behaving normally. She's been eating a drinking. But a little more sleepy then the normal. she gags here and there like she wants to vomit but then doesn't. she doesn't seem to be in any pain or discomfort. Is she sick?
- Hi Michelle,
Yes, I believe there is something wrong. The drooling usually indicates nausea, and the gagging bears this theory out. Her lethargy is an added complication. Is there any chance she could have eaten something hazardous/toxic outside? All things considered, I really think it would be best if you called your vet as soon as possible.
Best wishes for Gracie's recovery.
-- Contributed by: MichelleMy dog has alot of slobber, he is shaking his head to clear it and kind of licking the top of his mouth. He has drank water and eaten today and even drank while this problem is happening. He also seems to have some muscle control issues with his legs while this is happening, I would almost say it is a seizure, but he is not really twitching, per say. What should I do?
- Hi Sarah, these could be mini cluster seizures. At any rate, your dog's symptoms indicate something is going on. I recommend that you go ahead and call your vet to let him/her know what's going on. I truly hope everything will be alright. Let us know what you find out.
my dog is throwing up and isnt wanting to eat very much, however she is drinking lots of water.what is her problem?
- I found your question first on the Dog Expert page and answered it there.
Thanks.
-- Contributed by: mikeWell, it's starting to get colder out- but when my dog gets out of the yard, she has a tendency to roll around in smelly things, so not giving her a bath is out of the question. If I bathe my dog outside, is it possible that she'll get sick? And later on, when it's too cold for ME outside, is there an easy way to bathe her indoors if she has rolled in something? I know that there's no-water dog shampoo, but I'm just not sure if that's powerful enough if she's been rolling around.

Hi Shelby,
I wouldn't recommend bathing a dog outside in winter, but I do understand what you're saying about the smell.
We have two Standard Poodles, and we actually bathe them in our own bath tub, using a shower hose attachment. We have a good drain screen to catch hair and debris, and we simply clean the tub with Clorox spray cleaner afterward. We have a grooming tub for our smaller dogs, but this has been our cold weather solution for the big ones.
Hope this suggestions helps!
-- Contributed by: ShelbiHi Gizzmo,
It sounds like your dog has pica, a condition that compels people and animals to eat inappropriate items. Yes, it can be instigated by a mineral deficiencly, but the behavior can also be compulsive and hard to stop.
Since the itching didn't start until after your vet put him on medication, I believe you should go back to the vet and ask him/her to check if your dog could be allergic to the prescriptions. Your vet will know about any side effects associated with these meds.
Unless you've switched foods since your dog went on medication, I wouldn't think this was a food allergy issue. However, it could be a flea issue, so comb through your dog's hair to check for them. Whatever you find, don't hesistate to ask your vet to keep digging until you find an answer.
Thanks for your question, and I hope your dog is feeling better very soon.
