Hi Mike,

I'm really sorry to hear about what happened to your friend. I have two suggestions for you. First, your friend's physician is probably familiar with how to go about applying for a seeing eye dog, so that might be a good place to begin. I'd also recommend contacting Seeing Eye Inc., listed at the end of the article above. They train seeing eye dogs, so I'm sure they could tell you how to go about the process.

Thanks for your question. You sound like a good friend to have. :)

Hi Kathy,

I think it's terrific that you want to get involved. The best place to start your info search is probably with either The Seeing Eye or The Puppy Place. You'll find direct links to both sites listed above. They should be able to tell you what kind of qualifications are needed.

I think raising and providing early training is fairly easy to get into, but if you're actually interested in the final training that prepares the dogs as guides, you probably will need to go through some kind of training course. The Seeing Eye would probably be your best shot at info on that.

Best of luck, and let us know what you find out.

Hello,

I am very interested in being part of the team that trains the dogs. I was raised with someone who trained dogs to help the police search for drugs. What kind of degree would I need? How can i get started?

Hi Manny,

Yes, some dogs are weeded out during the training process because they aren't as reliable as they need to be. They're still great pets because they've recieved such great care and obedience training, they may just not have been able to focus as intensely as needed to be a guide.

I think it's wonderful that you want to give one of these dogs a home. I suggest you make contact through one of the links I've provided above under the heading "External Links". I think this would be the quickest way to locate one of these dogs.

Good luck in your search!
