Hi Amy,
I'm sorry to hear about the difficulty your dog has been having after the vaccination. Please see my advice to Drew below, and do give your vet a call to let him/her know what's going on. The wheezing in the lungs could be cause for alarm, so you'll want to have that checked as soon as possible.
Thanks for your question, and I hope everything will be alright.
-- Contributed by: KellyMy dog had his rabies vaccine 3 days ago. He has a very large lump (bigger then a golf ball). Last night it started weeping out a yellowish serous fluid. Today, he is coughing and when I listened to his lungs sounds there is wheezing. Is there anything I can do for him to help?
-- Contributed by: AmyHi Drew,
Yes, it's very likely that the vaccination caused the lump, and it's not uncommon for this to happen. It's usually the result of the immune system attacking the virus cells that were introduced with the vaccination. The lumps usually disappear with time, but sometimes they remain. In a few cases, the lump is sometimes a sign of infection at the injection site if bacteria were pushed under the skin with the injection.
Just to be on the safe side, call your vet and let him/her know that a lump has developed. Based on your description, the vet will decide whether or not your dog needs to be examined.
Thanks for your question. :)
-- Contributed by: KellyMy dog had a rabies vaccine intramuscular and a week later has a bump in that location. Could the vaccine cause this bump and will it ever go away?
-- Contributed by: DrewHi April,
Most likely your dogs will be fine, but this does depend on how long it has been since your dogs have had a follow up booster as well as if they might have had the animal in either of their mouths. Under the cir...stances, it would be a good idea to call your vet and let him/her know what has happened. At the very least, I'm sure your vet will want to bring your dogs up to date on their vaccination.
Thanks for your question, and best wishes.
-- Contributed by: KellyI FOUND A DEAD SEWER RAT IN MY YARD DEAD BUT I AM NOT SURE IF MY DOGS HAD ANY CONTACT WITH IT. THEY HAVE HAD THERE SHOTS BUT NOT THE BOOSTER. DO I NEED TO TAKE THEM IN TO GET LOOKED AT BY A VET?
-- Contributed by: Aprilmy dog also has developed a lump behind his shoulder muscle, just days after his rabies shot. and he is also vomiting and has the shivers becuause the dr put him on doxycline for his lime disease- i believe. i hope this gets better . he is not even 2 yet.
-- Contributed by: elizaI noticed, a day after my dog received his rabies vaccination, that he has developed a lump of hard tissue on(or in) his shoulder muscle. I'm not sure where on his body my dog received his shot, but could the vaccine cause this problem, and if so, what is it?
- Hi Kelliann, you might notice a lump like this from a subquetaneous injection. Most rabies shots are given intramuscularly in the hip. I would ask your vet exactly which kind of rabies shot was given and the exact site.
Thanks for your question.
-- Contributed by: KelliannHi Jessica,
Some rabies vaccines can be given SQ, others are designed to be administered intramuscularly. It depends on the manufacturer's directions, so I wouldn't worry about the difference between vets.
Thanks for your question.
-- Contributed by: KellyI was just wondering if any rabies vaccine can be given SQ or IM? My old vet would give it SQ, but my new vet gives it IM.
