Hi Wanda,

The 15th day is usually toward the end of the fertile phase, although each female is an individual. Normally I'd recommend one day's rest and then one more breeding, but since your female may soon be on her way out of heat, it would be fine to breed on the 16th day.

Good luck!

How many times should you let the dogs breed to assure they will concieve . I bred yesterday the 15th should I skip a day or let them breed the 16th today.

Hi Katie,

As long as your dog is healthy, she will likely come through just fine. However, you really want to try to prevent a third litter in a row because that would really deplete her personal resources. Be sure to take your dog for a daily walk around the block to help her stay toned, and feed her a high quality kibble.

Best wishes that all goes well. :)

Hi Chris,

Yes, I've heard of this before although I haven't seen it first hand for myself. We have an article on this very topic at LTK Cats. Check out 4 Eared Cat. We don't have a picture of the cat, but there is a video at the end of the article that shows a cat with four ears, two of which are smaller and do not actually work. It's an interesting phenomenon, so you have a very unique pet. :)

I have a rat terrier with an extra set of smaller ears behind her regular ears. They do not function but it is interesting. Have you ever seen this before? Is it rare?

Hi Kathy, and welcome to the site.

In most cases, yes, a mature male dog will be fertile the first time he is bred. This may be the first time your dog was ever bred, but you'll want to use him once more on the current female to help ensure a litter. :)

I have a 3 year old male pom that has never been bred until today. Is a male dog fertile the first time he is bred?

Hi Myron,

Just two well timed breedings with one day's rest in between should cover the fertile period. A dogs sperm can live for over a week in the female's canal, so breeding more than this really isn't necessary and it really over-taxes the male's energy.

Thanks for your question. :)

how many times do the dogs need to breed to make sure she gets pregnet

Hi Kristie,

This is an easy problem to remedy. You can put a book on the floor behind your female and cover it with a towel. Someone will need to keep your female in place, and the male can stand on the book to raise himself up high enough to reach her and make the connection. It's a little awkward to work this way, but breeders do it all the time. If you still have trouble, you can always ask your vet to perform an artificial insemination.

Thanks for your question, and I hope this suggestion works for you. :)

I am trying to breed two Shih tzus. Both my female and male are very willing. We only seem to have one problem my male is quite a bit smaller than the female and it seems he can't reach her. Any suggestions. Thanks, Kristie

Hi John,

As long as the original Dam doesn't have any outstanding faults and the half brother and sister are healthy, there shouldn't be any problem with pups from this half-sibling breeding. This falls under the category of line breeding, and professionals plan this type of breeding when they want to concentrate a particularly good dog's genetics in the progeny. You'll want all the puppies to have a health check from the vet before they go to new homes, but you'd want to do that with any litter.

Hope this info eases your worries, and best wishes for a healthy litter. :)

Can you please direct me to a source for information on the following question? Should I be concerned about a dog if the Dam & Sire are from the same Mother? The two were accidentially left together and bred a litter. The Sire is 6 1/2 years older than the Dam. Could there be concerns on future litters? Thank you

Hi Karen,

Yes, it's possible that the male could have spilled a little semen on the vulva and a few enterprising sperm could make their way in from there. It's far less likely than a pregnancy that resulted from actual penetration, but you might want to keep an eye on your female nevertheless.

Thanks for your question, and good luck.

Hi Suzi,

There's not an official age limit for when to stop breeding a dog, but I've always stopped breeding a female once she hit five years old. Around this age, the uterus begins to lose some of its elasticity. That said, some females are bred beyond that age and seem to do well. Males can be used at stud far longer as long as their fertility is good. The bottom line is that it is the individual dog's health that should be taken into consideration before breeding. I would go so far as to say it would be a good idea to get a health exam before breed mature dogs in the five years and up range.

Thanks for your question. :)

I have a 2 yr old female Yorkie who just finished her heat and she was visited daily by another Yorkie. They did not lock however the male spent all his time humping her without penetration. Can a dog get pregnant without penetration?

IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT ON BREEDING OLDER DOGS FOR HEALTH REASONS OR ?

-- Contributed by: SUZI

Hi Lachie,

Yes, it's very possible for a six-month-old male to impregnate a female so you might be expecting a litter. Our article on Dog Pregnancy Symptoms lists the signs to watch for in the coming weeks.

Hope all works out well for you, and thanks for visiting the site.

my 2 year old dog has been matting with the next doorz 6 mounth old puppy is there a chance she could have puppyz

Hi Greg,

It's very possible that the sire these two dogs have in common has some very desirable traits, so the mother and father of your pup may have been selected for breeding to concentrate the grandsire's good qualities. As long as the pup in question is healthy and the breeder is willing to give you a written guarantee against congenital health defects, I see no problem with getting the puppy.

Thanks for your question, and best wishes. :)

i AM ABOUT TO PURCHASE AN AMERICAN BULLDOG. uNFORTUNATELY AS i RESEARCH THE BREEDING i HAVE DISCOVERED THE SIRE AND DAM HAVE THE SAME FATHER.

TiS THIS INBREEDING ACCEPTABLE?

Hi Cristy,

While it's possible to breed this closely, it's not really recommended. An faults in the family line are sure to be intesified by the concentration of genetics in the offspring. It would be better to look for another stud dog for the ....

Thanks for your question.

can you breed a mother to her son and not have any major problems

Hi Jackie,

Some dogs are up to the task of breeding two females in a given week, some aren't. My hunch is that your friend's female isn't quite ready yet if your male isn't showing interest. Give it a few more days and the timing may be right then.

Thanks for your question.

Hi I just wanted to ask,my friend wants to use my dog as a stud to breed with her ... but we have a ... of our own and she happens to be in season at same time,so he just is interested in ours and not my friends. How can we work round this please? Thanks Jackie

Hi Kathy,

Your dog is still too young to breed, so it would be best not to proceed until she is over one year old.

That said, breeders do breed half brothers and half sisters to secure qualities from the desired parent they have in common. What you need to decide is if both of these dogs are outstanding specimens of the breed in their own right. If either one has a serious fault, I would find another stud for your...when she's old enough to breed. You want to work toward continuous improvement of the line.

Thanks for your question. :)

I have a 10 month old bichon...what would the out come be if her half brother would get her pregnant?

-- Contributed by: Kathy

I have a 16 month old female siberian husky and a 7 month old german shepherd/husky cross. It looks as though they are mating/fighting, are they ready for breeding?

  • Hi Ana, I would never recommend breeding a seven-month-old puppy under any circumstances. It's simply too young, whether it's a male or female. I suggest you separate the dogs until the female's heat cycle is over.

Thanks for your question.

what would happen if I breeded a medium size dog witha large size dog? could they be breeded or will my medium size dog die if she would to i won't breed her.

  • Hi Laura,

I doubt that your bitch would die, but I think you should consider whether breeding two different breeds together is really worthwhile. There are plenty of mixed breeds in shelters right now, hope ing for homes that may never materialize. Unless you are prepared to keep each puppy you can't find a home for, I wouldn't recommend it.

Thanks for your question.

i have a 10 month old german shepherd male and a 2year old female she doesnt have her periods but if they mate now can she get preganent?is he old enough to mate because i was trying to put him on her then he was running from me what to do i

  • Hi Rahul,

A bitch cannot breed or become pregnant unless she is in season. This is also why your male isn't interested. That said, I tend to wait until a male is over one year old before I try to use him at stud.

I think you will find the following articles very informative.

Thanks for your question.
