Hi Gaynelle,

The smell you describe does sound a lot like the smell that comes from the anal glands. Check out these articles to learn what causes it and what you can do about.

One more thing. Have you ever noticed if an odor comes from your dog's face? Sometimes Pugs need to have their facial wrinkles wiped out between baths. That could be another source of odor unless you already wipe them out on a regular basis.

Hope this info helps. :)

Hi Missy,

Glad to hear you've had such a great experience with your dog. And yes, every dog is an individual and should be treated as such, even when it comes to training. :)

I have a 2 year old puggle & I didnt seem to have a hard time training her at all. She caught on pretty quick with everything and potty training only took about 3-4 weeks. With any breed there are struggles and every dog is different. I wouldnt say puggles have a hard time learning at all - Like with any dog, training takes time and persistence. If you dont have that, get a cat. My dog is very loving, friendly, great with kids and other dogs, and fits perfect with our family. One thing I have a really hard time with is walking/jogging w/her. She has to STOP AND SMELL EVERYTHING and she zigzags so that I trip over her!!

Hi GL,

It sounds like you have your hands full! Every puppy is different, and it sounds like Marley is going to need a lot more training and guidance than his sister. I highly recommend you enroll in a puppy class right away. You can usually find one at your closest dog training facility. The instructor will off training tips to help you establish better manners and housebreaking, and your puppy will learn to look at you as his leader. After puppy class, you'll want to move on to basic obedience training when Marley is old enough. This will build on the work you began in puppy class, and it will make a great deal of difference in your pup's behavior.

As for the feces eating, you might want to check out the Doctors Foster and Smith website. They offer a product you can sprinkle on your dog's food that is supposed to stop the poop eating. I haven't used it on my own dogs, but they've carried the product for many years now, so it might be effective.

Although things seem rough now, it is possible to get Marley on board with the program. It's just going to take some determination and consistency on your part to help him learn what you want from him. It's going to take some work, but I'm sure it will be worth the effort. Best of luck. :)

i need advice.. Me and my husband bought 2 puggles they are from the same litter.they are wonderful beautiful dogs. But Our male, Marley has been acting HORRIBLE.. hiking his leg..running away, eating his feces, barking, bad leash manners, and humping.. what is going on with him...? Is he jealous of his sister? we treat them both with equal and tons of love..

My puggle has never bit anyone. They are extremely good around all children including mine but you have to watch them like you would any animal.

Hi Kim, thanks for sharing your experience. Unfortunately, a dog of any breed may bite under the right cir...stances. It just serves to remind us how careful we need to be with our pets and children. I hope your son has fully recovered.

Hi Junell,

You might want to consider taking your Puggle out more often during the day if at all possible. She may not be ready to hold it as long as you might expect from a puppy this age. Consistency will be the key here.

The potty pad really might be adding to the confusion. It's difficult for a four-month-old puppy to understand why she's allowed to potty in the house sometimes and not others. I would switch to a crate for the overnights, and then take the puppy out first thing very early in the morning. This first trip outside should be longer because your pup may need to go several times to really empty out. Try to take her out again within an hour to hopefully avoid another indoor accident. Praise her well when she goes outside so she makes the connection that this is the only acceptable place to potty.

Thanks for your question.

I have a 4.5 month old puggle and potty training seems to be a challenge. I have a gated area where she sleeps with potty pads for at night. Then durning the day we take her outside. She goes outside but still has accidents. She goes a lot overnight and hasn't seemed to hold it very well yet. I know at 5 months they the muscle that allows them to hold it develops but it just seems to be taking a long time. Do you think the potty pad at night is confusing her? Should it be removed?

Hi Brittany,

I'm glad to hear that all is going well with your brother's new puppy. It sounds like you're doing a great job with training. :)

I got my little brother a puggle puppy and he is very sweet. He was easy to potty train, and is very cuddly. I have experienced the beagle howl, when a fire truck passed our house with the sirens blaring he howled and ran to the door. But he's well behaved.

I just got a puggle for a present and he is the cutest thing in the whole world. I have only had him a couple of days but he seems to be the easiest dog to potty train. He already knows that he needs to go to the door if he has to go. I'm still waiting for his howl =)

I have a puggle and she is about a year and about 4 or 5 months old and she I so smart. She knows so many tricks and teaching her was not hard at all. She is also potty trained and that was probably the easiest thing. She actually taught herself that in order to go outside to go potty she has to bark at the door. When I got my puggle she was 9 weeks old and she had a one-cell parasite in her intestine (the parasite made her have to go to the bathroom a lot and she was always sleepy and she was potty trained before she was 10 weeks. I don't know if I just got lucky with her being easy to train or maybe it depends on the puggle

  • Hi Kaitlyn,

It probably also has something to do with you being a terrific owner too! Congratualtions on having such a great Puggle. We'd like to hear more of these stories.
