Hi Faith,
I agree with you that Poodles are far more than show dogs. They were actually bred as water dogs/Retrievers. Those show clips are actually the clips that were designed to serve the dogs well in the field. The various poms protect the joints, while other strategic areas were shaved clean to reduce water weight when the dogs were working. Sadly, most people don't understand how efficient these clips are and tend to relegate them to simply a fashion choice. They certainly are fashionable, but they are functional as well.
As for the image displayed with this article, it is a simple pet trim, not one of the standard dog show clips. Poodles have such amazing coats to work with that there are probably over 150 different trims. My favorite has always been the puppy trim, even for adult dogs because it is much easier to take care of than trims that leave more hair on the dog. Poodles tend to matt, so unless you have the time to do a full brush out every day, the puppy trim is one of the easier ways to go.
Thanks for sharing your opinion. :)
-- Contributed by: KellyI am so sick and tired of breeds being shown in their pet variety while poodles are shown in pictures and the media in their show varieties. Most poodles are simply pets. They can have a variety of different trims. Poodles have an image that no other friendly dog has - it comes from show cuts. And people don't realize they are simply dogs. Yes, they are naturally elegant sometimes. I have 2. One has the bouncy elegant natural walk and the other is just a regular "joe" in how he looks and acts. They came from the same professional breeder in New Jersey. I end up having to explain how athletic my dogs are to people who think poodle and then see a picture of those weird show cuts!

Actually, many of the pet trims are variations of the puppy trim so the description is still fairly accurate. Take the Dutch clip for example. It is really only a modified puppy trim where the torso hair is clipped a bit shorter and the legs are sculpted to look like leggings. Yes, this trim has it's own name, but it's still a variation of the puppy clip.
I am glad to hear you haven't encountered any of the health problems that plague this breed. As a former Poodle breeder myself, I can tell you that it is very expensive to test for a combination of the most prevalent conditions, including displasia, SA and VWD, but it's important to do so in order to identify and remove carriers from a breeding program.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and I hope you enjoy the rest of the site. :)
-- Contributed by: KellyGee... the article makes it sound like it's hard to find a good, healthy poodle under $1,000. I've had three under that price and none has had any major health issues. ALSO, their comment about Poodles being kept "mainly in three acceptable trims" is not accurate at all; that only applies to show dogs - which most Poodles aren't. There are much simpler, easier to maintain clips for pet Poodles.

You can expect your puppy will at least be Toy sized, but my guess is that she will probably wind up a little over ten inches tall at the shoulder. This would technically put her in the Miniature category, but if she reaches this size she will still likely remain on the smaller end of the Miniature range. This is still a nice size for a house pet.
Thanks for your question. :)

Typically Kool-Aid is used to dye the fur. The coloring is absorbed into the hair shaft. It doesn't harm the dog as long as the skin is healthy, but it does leave a fruity smell in the coat. This can attract bees and flies during warm weather, so I don't really recommend doing it.
Thanks for your question.

Poodles have been bred over many generations to live closely with people, and selective breeding has brought out some of the best traits any canine could have. Poodles have been bred with an eye toward developing affectionate and cooperative personalities that blend in quite well with family life. These dogs are extremely people-oriented.
Are you considering getting a Poodle? If so, spend a lot of time visiting breeders and playing with their dogs. This will help you get to know the true Poodle personality, and I think you'll be pleased with it.
Thanks for your question!
