Hi Linda, and thank you for the compliment. It's our goal to fairly represent every breed. :)
-- Contributed by: KellyI have a read a thousand descriptions on the pit bull dogs and I can say without hesitation that your's is the most accurate of all. Good for you! A little known fact about pedigrees being kept in the 1700s is amazing and yes true.
thanks Linda

-- Contributed by: chrisHi, I have 2 pitbulls currently. This is the first time I have owned this breed, but in the past I have had several different types of dogs. I must say that they are the best dogs I have ever had. They have lots of energy and get along well with my cat and also the several children that frequently come to vist my home. True they are very protective of their owners and their residential surrounds, but are not outrageously viciuos as they are blamed to be. I have come across small breed dogs that I must say are much more vicious than any pitbull I have ever encountered.
-- Contributed by: NiayaHi Lanette,
It's a shame the police won't investigate. I truly hope your dog is able to recover.
Thanks for sharing your situation.
-- Contributed by: KellyI have had many pits in my life, and they are the best dogs I have owned. I rescued one in Nov. and someone shot him in July, he is not dead, but needs expensive surgery. The police won't even investigate. UGH!!!! They get a real bad rap in press.

-- Contributed by: marcusI am the proud owner of a 18 month 95 Lb pitbull whos name is zeus. He is brindle in color and the sweetest dog in the world. He loves to play and run and shower. I always hear about these competitions for pitbulls but there are none close to where i live and i am very interested in entering him into one. I live in Lockport, NY and if you have any usefull information on where i could find one i would greatly appreciate it.
-- Contributed by: KevinI have a pitbull beagle mix he looks just like the picture of the dog at the top of the page. he is a big snuggler and he loves to play tug a war and he loves to run with me. I do need help with one thing he gets very nervous around new people. sometimes he growls and there have been times where i was worried he might bite. I have had him since he was 5 weeks old and he is now 1 and 1/2 he has never been abused he sleeps with me and i praise him every day when he is in trouble like getting into the cat box we just say no only if we catch him in the act so he will understand and when new people come in we let them know is name and sit down with them and show him it is okay but he continues to bark at them and growl if the person tries to pat him he runs away. Help!
- Hi Kayleigh,
It's important to provide your dog with more socialization in order to make him more comfortable around other people. My advice is to enroll you dog in a basic obedience class. This will give you more control over his behavior, and the instructor will help you work through your dog's anxiety around new people. I think this is your best option to prevent someone from becoming hurt.
Thanks for your question, and good luck with the training. :)
-- Contributed by: kayleighi don't think that people should put pit bull dogs down, because of their breed. my pit bulls Princess and Butch are very active dogs and need a bigger place to run around in because they are very active animals. Butch is a little older than Princess and Princess is much more active than Butch i also have a German Shepard mix that is also active, his name is Jake. Lucy is my other female she is a Golden Retriever. All together i have 4 dogs. They are my kids. I love them alot. They are spoiled. All my dogs are loveable and bed hogs. In the summer i take them for walks and rides and for swims.
-- Contributed by: MichelleI recently accquired a 1 yr old female Shar-pei, Rottwiller, bulldog mix. She looks like a Staffordshire Terrier. I am a female, 5'2", "ShyAnne" weighs aprox 55lbs. She is very energetic a jumper and licker. Sometimes it gets very annoying and as sweet as she is, it upsets me when she jumps on me and trys to lick me to death. She knocked me over, tripped me on the stairs, and I threw out my back walking her, I am all bruise up! I don't want to be mean to her or give her up, but she is constantly at side thus the reason I keep getting hurt. She's already been through 2 owners and I want to help her get over the anxiety she is experiencing.
- Hi CJ
ShyAnne sounds like a love, but yes, you've got to get her under control so you don't suffer any more injuries. Have you considered enrolling the two of you in an obedience class? The heeling exercise teaches your dog to walk calmly at your side. The down command is a miracle worker too. ShyAnne already looks to you as her leader, and I really believe these lessons are all you need to make the relationship work. Your calm control should relieve ShyAnne's anxiety issue.
Thanks for your question, and good luck.
-- Contributed by: CJI have a pitbull who is an absolute joy. She loves children and playing with other dogs and any cat who will let her get close enough. She is out playing with our neighbors grandkids and all her other dog friends every chance she gets. She loves to be babies and get all the attention she can. She also knows that she is very independent, strong, and a little stubborn sometimes. It is frustrating when people see her and react terribly. She is a wonderful dog and all who know her, just love her. I have had dogs my entire life and the dog's temperment depends on how it is raised and treated. We need more responsible dog owners and media who learn the facts and know the responsibilities of raising a dog so that these animals won't always have such a bad name.
- I agree with you Raylene. All dogs deserve to be raised responsibly to give them the best possible chance at life. :)
i have 1 pitbull 2 months...how i train this dog not to bite cause he bites everything he see thing or human... cn i ask a cool list of dogs names?
- Hi Francis,
This type of behavior would be a serious problem for any breed of dog, but because of the reputation Pitbulls have, it is especially problematic for you. I highly recommend you locate a canine behaviorist through your closest dog training facility and ask him or her to evaluate your dog's temperament. Hopefully, this professional can recommend a way to teach your dog not to bite. Keep in mind that if your dog truly has a bad temperament, it may be necessary to euthanize him to keep someone from being hurt.
Thanks for your question, and I hope this situation can be resolved through training.
-- Contributed by: francisGrowing up, we had 3 pittbulls who were apart of our family. I loved those dogs. I never could understand all of the hype that pitbulls received because our dogs were never that way. Talk about smart and intelligent dogs, Max would bump the garage door open with his head roam around and wait for my father or myself to get home to let him back in. He would be waiting in front of the garage for us. Almost like protecting his castle. Sassy was fun she would let me ride on her back like she was a horse. They were so loyal to my father and I. We would keep Max and Sassy in the house when my father had to work swings. I have so many great memories of those dogs growing. When I moved out and lived on my own my father bought me a house warming present, a pitbull pup. It was the best gift I could have received. I named her sassy and she was raised around my 2 kids, 7 and 13 now. She is so cute, smart, and fun. She picks grapefruits from the grapefruit tree and gathers them together. She acts like there balls. Drags the lawnmower around, logs. I don't know what it is with big objects that they like dragging around. I know one thing if you are going to choose a pitbull make sure you have time for attention and love to give to the dog. They are the most loyal dogs you will ever see. I highly reccomend a pitbull as a family dog.

-- Contributed by: BreannaI adopted my sensitive, goofy, and sweet pit bull named "Max" from a local shelter. He has changed my life. He plays well with other dogs b/c I socialized him early on. The breed on average is wonderful--pit bulls just require a lot of time and a lot of love.
-- Contributed by: RebekahThanks! appreciate the comments...i too have learned to really love this breed...it is such a shame what the general public think about this dog. I am discovering these dogs are so responsive, obedient and loving!
-- Contributed by: ElizabethWe have 2 pitbulls...the first one we bought is now 5 months old and recently we purchased one 6 weeks...do you have any tips for helping these gals get along? The play fight, the older pup is actually quite gentle but i'm a bit worried...
- Hi Elizabeth,
The main thing you can do is be a very active and involved owner, and by this I mean that you must maintain the alpha position with your dogs.
Pitbulls tend to become aggressive toward each other and other dogs around eighteen months of age. While a well-raised dog is usually trustworthy around its human companions, it may still attack other canine pack members.
Definitely obedience train both of your girls, and keep an eye out for aggressive behavior so you can nip it in the bud.
Thanks for your question, and best of luck.

Hi Ruby,
Personally, I wouldn't leave any dog outside below freezing unless you happen to have a very good dog house to keep your pet insulated from the cold. Even with that, I'd still bring the dog inside if the wind chill dips into the dangerous range.
Thanks for your question.
-- Contributed by: rubyHi Warner,
"Pitbull" is honestly more of a createive nickname for these dogs. They are not actually one pure breed, although the American Staffordshire Terrier is the prototype, the breed they most look like.
These dogs are mainly bred from Am Staffs and Bull Terriers. However, some breeders breed their progeny to Mastiffs, Great Danes and other large breeds to bring in more bulk and size. That is why looks can vary so much from one Pitbull to the next.
Thanks for your question, and I hope you enjoy the rest of the site.

-- Contributed by: warnerMe and my boyfriend have a 10 month old Pitbull (some say she has a little boxer in her). If you search for "Pepsi" and "Pitbull together on YouTube.com, you can find some videos of her doing tricks or just playing. Anyhow, she is the light of our life. It only took her 2 days to get "up" (on her hind legs), "right paw", "left paw" and "lie down". She is obsessed with freeze dried liver treats, and as a young pup ended up on top of the refrigerator trying to get to them. We're having some anxiety issues when we leave, since she is used to having someone in the house at almost any given point in the day...Other than that, she is the most tempermental, adoring dog I have ever owned. She has never growled, bitten, attacked or anything of that calibur. Granted, she doesn't know the strength of her own jump or gnaw, but that is not her fault and shall be attended to by continued training. A few years back I got chased by two pitbull/amstaffs (I was pretty young, about 16/17 at the time so I don't remember which it was since they look pretty similar) but I have also been chased by a family golden retriever and bitten by some of those tiny dogs that everyone seems to love to carry around like accessories these days. It has nothing to do with the dog, it's all about the training. This webpage is a blessing, thank you for making it!
-- Contributed by: LaurenHi Linda,
It would be highly unusual for your bitch to come into season just three weeks after whelping. I think it would be wise to have your vet check her for signs of a uterine infection. He/She will also check her mammary glands for infection as well. If there is an infection, a course of antibiotics may do the trick, but also be prepared to have her spayed if the infection is advanced.
I truly hope everything turns out all right, and thank you for your question.
-- Contributed by: KellyMy Pit had her first litter of puts on Labor Day this year. She is showing signs of going into heat. Is this possible? Thanks
