Hi Okie,
Did your vet do anything else for your dog to diagnose the problem? Did she even take skin scrapings to see if this was a mite condition. Honestly, I think you might want to seek a second opinion from another clinic.
-- Contributed by: KellyWhy is my beautiful Bishon Fries pink skin turning this ugly balck.I asked my vet and all she said was this breed of dog has a lot of skin problems and this is one. Then she asked an aide,"when does a dogs skin change?" she said 6 mths. old..I left..my baby is 3 yrs. old.Can anyone help him?
-- Contributed by: okieHi Kathy,
Although I can't be certain, this does sound a lot like a food allergy. Food allergies usually show up first on the face and head as well as the dog's front. It eventually begins working it's way back. It would be a good idea to have your dog tested to identify the particular allergens that could be causing the problem. This is the quickest route to relieving your dog's itching.
Thanks for your question, and I hope the vet can quickly identify the problem.
-- Contributed by: KellyMy 5yr old Malamute has been itching for the last year and we can't figure it out. He has very dry skin and scratches under his arm pits alot and chews on himself. He just developed a few sores, open in the middle and hard and crusty around outside. These are mostly around his muzzle where the whiskers are, maybe hair folicle related? Today I just noticed a dry itchy spot above his right eye. What is it? Food allergies?
-- Contributed by: KathyHi Benita,
It's not really good to keep your dog on Benadryl for too long at a time. I once had a dog that was diagnosed with grass allergy secondary to flea allergy. My vet prescribed lincocin at the time and it seemed to help clear the infection that accompanied the rash. You should ask your vet if your dog also needs a corticosteroid to help calm the inflammation.
You might also want to consider providing your dog with a floored kennel for exercising. This would lessen direct exposure with the grass.
Thanks for your question, and I hope your vet is able to provide your dog with more relief.
-- Contributed by: KellyI have a i year old lab chow mix that has itchy bumps on his tail and back accompinied by hair loss and sometimes infection. The vet says he is allergic to grass. I hate to see him go through so much torment and pain. We give him benadryall and trim his fur to get air to the site but it doesen't seem to help. Cam you suggest anything else?
-- Contributed by: BenitaHi Quilter,
This could be a bite infection, but it almost sounds as though your dog was bitten or stung by an insect and is having an allergic reaction. Your vet is the most qualified person to determine what's going on, so you should make an appointment right away. If this is due to an insect bite, the vet will probably prescribe an antihistamine to stop the reaction.
Thanks for your question, and best wishes for your dog's quick recovery.
-- Contributed by: Kellyi have a 3yr old boxer. overnight he developed a large sack under his chin and filled with liquid. he also has quarter sized raised blotches all over now. he is an indoor dog but heplayed with another dog and got a small bite wound near the sack.Could this be a simple reaction to an infection?
-- Contributed by: red blotchesHi Devin,
A simple case of dandruff can usually be eased with the use of a moisturing shampoo and by add a little fresh fish oil to your pet's diet. Omega-3 fatty oils, found in fish oil are very good for the skin and coat.
Thanks for your question. :)
-- Contributed by: KellyMy Brown lab mix with australien sheperd has a kind of dandruft,I want to know how to get rid of the dandruft. Is there a way it can get ridden?
-- Contributed by: DevinHi Kerry,
It's time for a return visit to your vet to discuss these lumps you've found. The vet will determine whether they are abscesses or growths and decide how to best proceed from there. I also suggest you ask that your dog be tested for ringworm because this fungus can cause patchy hairloss. It's definitely worth investigating.
Thanks for your question, and I hope the vet can give you a more definitive diagnosis this time. Good luck!

-- Contributed by: kerryHi, I recently came across a puppy in need of help. He had major hair lose and was very itchy. I took him to the vet and his diagnosis was scabies. We took him in once a week for three weeks to get dipped. His hair has since grown back but one stubborn spot. The spot is about 1 1/2" wide and is a circle shape. It seems to bother him and no hair seems to want to grow in that particular spot what do you recomend?
- Hi Irma,
I recommend you take the dog back to the vet and have that patch of circular hair loss tested for ringworm. It's very treatable.
Thanks for your question, and kudos to you for your kindness to this very needy pup. :)
-- Contributed by: Irma VillarrealHi i have a min pin and she has what seems are scabs on the tip of her ear inside. It hurts her very bad if i touch it . What could it be?
- Hi Alysha,
It sounds as though your dog has scratched her ears until they scabbed. This could be caused by an ear mite infestation, so I recommend you let your vet take a look. The vet can clean the ears as much as necessary and then medicate them to kill the mites. You may also receive oral medication to ensure the infestation is wiped out. This will help your dog to get back to normal.
Thanks for your question, and best wishes.
-- Contributed by: alyshaThank you for any input. My dog (blue heeler) has had a small, weeping lump near the outer edge of her inner ear for 3 years now. It feels like a lump with distinct, sharp edges and appears to be made more "crispy" by dried, exuded stuff. That's all I know. Doesn't seem to bother her or be tender to the touch, but I am concerned as is doesn't seem to go away. fungus? bacteria? parasite? Any ideas on what it is or what to do about it?
Thank you very, very much
- Hi David,
It sounds like it may be a cyst that drains periodically, but it would be a good idea to have your vet take a look at it.
Best wishes.
-- Contributed by: David BarnesHi, i have a 7 year old german shepard mix and i've taken him to th vet before and they simply wrote it off as a flea allergy. that might be all it is but when i took him in he'd been chewing on his feet so much they were darkened colored and the skin was tough, much like his "under side" and the top of his hind legs. he also scratched a lot at his face. He lost a lot of fur because of this too. well i took him in and the vet gave him some steroids and antibiotics for the infection he'd caused and sent me home saying it's just a flea allergy. but now about 2 months later we're back to where we started. he got much better, all his fur had come back and now he's loosing it again and there aren't any fleas!!!!!! I was lookig around and came across this thing about DOG YEAST INFECTIONS. is it possible he might have one? would it be a safe bet to start treating him for one or should i consult the vet before starting anything? maybe try a different medicated shampoo for the itch? Please help.
- Hi Sam,
Yeast infections are often suspected when a dog persistently licks and chews at his feet, and this may be the case. However, the signs you're describing are also consistent with a dog food allergy. The steroids basically relieve the inflammation and effectively mask the symptoms, but they come right back once the medication has been discontinued.
Food allergies can crop up even when a dog has been on the same diet for years, so don't rule out the idea if this is the case with your own dog.
Honestly, you need to go back to the vet to have your dog tested. If your vet is unwilling to give up the quick and easy diagnosis of flea allergies and open his mind to other possibilities, find another vet who is willing to start from scratch and let the symptoms lead him to the diagnosis, not the other way around.
Thanks for your question, and I hope you can find lasting relief for your dog very soon.
-- Contributed by: SamI have a daschund who a red rash-like on his abdomen. Also, he appears to be loosing hair and I have noticed scabs on his hair ,which I think may be the reason for his hair loss. He has been treated for demodectic mange when he was younger. Could this be it again. Thanks

Hi Kelly,
It is possible that your dog has another parasite problem, but you should really let your vet have a look at your dog. There are so many possible causes for skin rashes that it takes a trained eye to make a diagnosis. Your vet will likely want to take a skin scraping to look for parasites and go on from there.
Thanks for your question, and I hope your vet is able to bring your dog some relief very quickly.
-- Contributed by: Kellyhello, i have a question,if anybody could answer me, i have a year and half peek a poo, she has this scabs that are red, that move, one day is on her ear, next day on her head, sometimes on both, sometimes it bleed and scars like a dry scab a child gets after peeling off skin from a fall, same looks, i have no idea what it could be, she does not scrath it often either, and starts like a red patch like a sore, also sometimes on her nipples ,scab looking, thanks ally

Hi Ally,
Skin problems are very difficult to diagnose, so the best thing you can do for your dog is take her to the vet. Your vet can take skin scrapings in an effort to identify if this is a parasitic or fungal problem. If it's not, then he/she will probably test for food allergies. Either way, your vet should be able to help your dog heal.
Thanks for your question, and I hope your dog gets better soon.
