MY DOG HAD PUPS IN JANUARY 9; WHEN WILL BE HER NEXT HEAT? THANKS
-- Contributed by: BEVHi Erika,
The bleeding will lighten considerably during the second week of the cycle, and then resume near the beginning of the third week. From there it will taper off to nothing.
For more info, check out our article on Dog Heat Symptoms. It offers a deeper explanation.
Thanks for your question. I hope you're enjoying the site. :)
-- Contributed by: KellyMy 8 month old boxer has been in heat for a week now and has been bleeding the whole time. I now she will be in heat for 3 weeks, does that mean she will bleed for 3 weeks?
-- Contributed by: erikaHi Sarah,
In most cases it's best to wait to breed a female for the first time between 18 and 24 months old. This gives her plenty of time to mature physically as well as mentally.
Thanks for your question. :)
-- Contributed by: Kellyhi , what is the right age to try and breed ? i have a one year old dalmatian.... thanks sarah .
-- Contributed by: sarahower shizpoo is coming in heat now, but we are not sure of the best time to try to breed her. she has been bleading for two days now. can you tell me when we shold try to breed? thanks.
- Hi Barry, you should find this article helpful: Dog Heat Cycle and Breeding.
I purchased a two year old pug and her 3 year old mate. She finished weaning her litter the same day I purchased her. I was told I would have about 4 to 6 months before she went in heat again. It is now three days later. Her mate can't stop mounting her (we have now separated them). Her vulva is swollen and she is discharging dark red blood. Could she go into heat again or would it just be from him trying to mount her so much?
- Hi Kay,
This is really too soon to be a normal heat cycle. I honestly believe you should take your bitch to the vet to find out exactly what is going on. She could have an infection, or there may be a problem with her hormones.
There's also a possibility that this is not the bitch that had the pups. Your vet will be able to tell.
Thanks for your question, and I hope the situation works out alright.
-- Contributed by: KayHi, I am a little worried my ... will be 2 in January and has not had a season is this a problem for her? I am not interested in breeding as she has a grade 3 heart murmer and due to this I would also be worried about her having the operation to be spayed.

Hi Louise,
It's not necessarily worth worrying about that she hasn't come into season yet. In fact, given her large murmur, it's probably a blessing. That said, don't hesitate to take her in to your vet if you notice anything unusual or disturbing. An ovarian cyst can effect/delay a heat cyle, but this certainly doesn't mean your dog has one.
Thanks for your question, and please accept my best wishes for your dog's continued health.
-- Contributed by: Louise RGood question Lu.
I once asked a seasoned breeder that question when I was just starting out, and she said you count forward from the last season whether the bitch was bred or not. That said, condition plays a large role in whether a bitch comes in season as expected, so you can't rely solely on an arbtrary number of weeks between heat cycles. If the dog was bred and the litter took a lot out of her, she might come in a little later than you planned.
Hope that answers your question. Thanks!
-- Contributed by: KellyHi there could you just clear something up for me ... i have been speaking to my friend about breeding. Should you count the next breed season 26 weeks from when the bitch has had pups or from the date of when the bitch has been in season? or from when the bitch has actually been bred?
