Hi Shaina,

Those do sound like some of the symptoms of pregnancy, but time will surely tell if you dog's abdomen begins to increase in size a few weeks from now. Here are a couple of articles I think you'll find helpful:

Best wishes that it all works out well. :)

Hi John,

Breast tissue development is common in females that are in heat. It's signaled by the change in hormone levels. Since your female just came into heat two weeks ago, she is likely still cycling because the average heat cycle lasts about 21 days. Your female could be ovulating right now, so if your mom doesn't want a litter, you need to separate the female from the males right away. I can't guarantee that it's not already too late to prevent a litter.

We have some good articles on this topic that I think you'll find helpful. Check out:

You won't really be able to tell much until about three weeks after your dog's heat cycle ends, but hopefully this info will help you determine whether or not she becomes pregnant. Don't hesitate to come back if you have more questions. :)

I'm not sure if my dog is pregnant because she and 2 other males are always together when everyone is at work from morning to afternoon.

My chihuahua got her first season about 2 weeks ago>. My mother's male chihuahua who is about 3 times bigger than her is always very tempermental if we approach her, and she is always very tempermental with him if he tries to mount her, he won't leave her alone and she often has her tail down in between her legs...she is 8 months. He is 1yr 2 months. The other male is her age, size and is barely in puberty but he is very calm and more on the submissive side. I'm beginning to notice small lumps around her nipples and I don't know if that's a sign of them getting into a lactation process. She often likes to isolate herself from the males and enjoys the peace of napping, and aside from the subject...she loves licking my face non stop lol. I would definitely appreciate any feedback if you have taken your time to read. Thank you.

Hi Gregsmom,

You can ask your vet to palpate your Chi 28 days after the first breeding. The vet may be able to feel some pea-sized lumps in the uterus, and these would be the embryos.

Right now, the best thing you can do is feed your dog a high quality kibble that uses a real named meet source for protein. Brands that list corn products and by-products withing the first five ingredients are using cheap filler protein sources that dogs can't digest very well. This means they don't get the amount of protein promised on the label.

Additionally, just be careful about your Chi jumping off the furniture. That would be a bit too much exercise, and you don't want the placentas to dislodge from the uterine wall.

Good luck with the litter, and be sure to join us on the Dogs forum if you find you have more questions. :)

i took her to the breeder we got her off of and mated her up with one of her male chihuahuas. They were in a surrounding together for about 5-6 days. i know its too early to tell but do you think she is pregnant? and what special precautions can i do for her to make her pregnancy more easy for her! i want the best for my little chikita! by the way she is a little over a year and a half! thanks so much

Hi Reshma,

Yes, proper care is essential for maintaining any dog's health and well-being. :)

Hi Betty,

You should double check the forum again. We were doing server maintenance last night, so that may be why you had some difficulty joining. If it looks like it didn't go through, just register again today because it should go through now. If it doesn't, just let me know and I'll find out what's going on.

As for your question, I always recommend keeping the male away from the pups until they are about 4-5 weeks old. This gives their immune systems time to strengthen. There's something known as "puppy fade syndrome" where an otherwise healthy looking pup simply grows weak and dies for no apparent reason. Actually, these deaths are often attributed to a strain of the herpes virus, and any adult dog could be a carrier. The virus has the strongest affect on newborns up to two weeks, but it's better to wait until later to introduce other adult dogs in the household. Additionally, having another dog around during the birth can make some moms very anxious, so it's best to keep them isolated so they can concentrate on the job at hand and settle in to rear the litter.

Thanks for your questions, and I hope we'll see you at the forum soon. :)

Hi Kelly~ I went ahead and signed up for the dog forum but for some reason i haven't received a e-mail confirmation so activate. in the meantime that i wait for this e-mail i have a question that my husband asked me this morning. Being that I have a male chihuahua and a female chihuahua (which mated) will the male chihuahua get jealous once the pupies are born? Will he be able to be around for the birth or should i keep him in another room seperate from the female?

-- Contributed by: Betty

Hi Betty, I'm so glad you're finding the site helpful.

Two meals a day should be sufficient, but you may want to let your female feed freely as she nears the end of the pregnancy. She may actually need to eat smaller amounts more often as her abdomen becomes more crowed. It's alright to offer some boiled egg twice a week, but it's not necessary to do so every day. Mainly, you don't want to upset the balance of nutrients if you are already feeding a high quality kibble.

As for the milk, I don't advise serving it. Cow's milk often causes loose stools in dogs. They have trouble digesting it. It's actually better to offer a spoonful of cottage cheese with your dog's dinner during the last two weeks of pregnancy when the pups are gaining bone density and mom is preparing to nurse.

Thanks for your questions, and do join us on the Dogs forum. :)

Hi Kelly

I wanted to ask you, i saw in a sight that indicated given my female chihuahua a hard boiled egg a day due to her pregnancy. Can you tell me if this is likly?

I've also noticed she has been sleeping more frequent and is eating everything in her plate then she usually did. Which i guess is a good sign. She i add one more feeding a day? I usually give her two a day with my male. Is milk also good for them to have once a day?

Thanks so much for your info. you have no idea how much this has helped me.

-- Contributed by: Betty

Thanks Kelly. I've printed out the wibsites so i can read into it as i'm sitting in my car for lunch. Will advise as soon as i hear something from the vet on her status.

Hi All, Need some advice. My female chihuahua started her heat on 9/2/09 on 9/8/09 i noticed my male chihuahua tied to her (i was surprised b/c i've never seen this) But anyhow, what are the chances of her being pregnant?

-- Contributed by: Betty

Hi DYIon, and welcome to the site.

I can't be certain, but it does sound as though your dog could be pregnant. We have a couple of good articles on this topic that describe the symptoms to watch for. Check out:

Your vet may also be able to diagnose a pregnancy through a blood test. You might want to have this done if the symptoms aren't clearly showing yet.

Right now, don't worry too much if your dog's appetite is off. That often happens during the first month of pregnancy, but the appetite usually returns with a vegence after about the first four weeks.

In addition to the articles mentioned above, I think you'll also find our article on Dog Pregnancy helpful. You can also continue to ask questions by visiting the Breeders Corner of our Dogs forum. It's a place where longtime breeders and newbies can meet and share questions and info. I encourage you to visit, and we'll provide all the help we can. :)

Hello I was wondering if my coco was pregnant she is a small chiahuahua ( sorry if misspelled) all I know is we caught the dogs humping in the back yard and we don't know if they locked up but it has been a month and she has a hard stomach and she has been sleeping alot and her nipples are kinda big but not that big. Also when we take her outside she just pees and she has become a picky eater she won't eat dog food so we feed her some salmon will that hurt the babies if their are any. So basically is she pregnant? If so where do I go from here. Help!

-- Contributed by: DYlon

Hi Mika,

Great news about the puppies. The temporary drops in temperature that you're seeing now are natural. What you're look for is an actual drop down near 97 F that stays there for two readings space about 12 hours apart. When that happens, delivery should happen with 24 hours.

Keep us posted on how things turn out. Good luck. :)

-- Contributed by: Kelly

Hi Cameron,

Did you mean two weeks or two months pregnant? At two weeks the vet wouldn't be able to feel the embryos in the uterus and wouldn't be able to tell you there were eight puppies. The reason I ask is because how far along your female is in her pregnancy affects what you should do for her.

If your dog is less than one month pregnant, there's not a lot you need to do for her other than offer her a high quality diet, and help her stay toned by taking her for a ten minute walk a couple of times a week. Don't encourage her to over-exercise or jump a lot because this can sometimes cause one of the placentas to separate from the uterine lining. Just remember moderation in all things and your dog should do well.

If your dog is actually near the end of her delivery, the best thing you can do is prepare a place for her to whelp her puppies. You can line a low-sided box with newspapers and a blanket so your dog can make a nest out of it. It's a good thing that she is eating well, and at this point you can add a spoonful of cottage cheese to her daily dinner to provide a little extra calcium.

That's about all you really need to do. However, I think you'll enjoy our article on Delivering Puppies. It explains everything you need to do when your dog goes into labor.

Thanks for your question, and I hope this is the information you needed. Keep us posted on what happens next. :)

Hello, Thank you for answering my questions. I took my female to the vet about a week ago and they did an x-ray and found five little puppies. The vet had said that she should have her puppies within 7 to 10 days. Last night her temperature dropped to 98.8 and continued to drop to 98.4 and them came back up and then dropped back down to around 99.8. Is that normal? I am not sure if she is going into labor, if it continues to happen I am going to call the vet, but I thought I would ask to if you had any insight.

Thank you

thanks for the info kelly took her to the vet she is 2 weeks pregnant but she is very active to carry 8 puppies its kinda weird she eats normal what should i do.

is my chihuahua 1-2weeks old pregnant her nipples are getting more visable but shes still humping things what should i do.

-- Contributed by: cameron

Hi Carol,

I used to breed Chihuahuas myself. The average gestation for any dog is really more like 63 days. Vets do use x-rays to help count how many puppies, and this is usually done in the final week of pregnancy when the pups have enough bone density to show up on the film. However, it's not always possible to see all the pups due to their positioning. With a Chihuahua this small, you may only get one to two pups anyway. The important thing to realize, is that there is a strong possibility your dog will need a C-section to deliver since she is so tiny. Most breeders won't breed a female this small because of the risk for complications during delivery. Your dog may surprise us and deliver without a problem, but it would be prudent to discuss the possible need for a C-section with your vet ahead of time so can be prepared as possible.

Thanks for your question, and I wish you the best of luck that all goes smoothly. Let us know when the litter arrives. :)

Hi Mika,

Although I can't determine exactly where your dog is at in her pregnancy, we do have a great article that may help you get a better idea of how far along she might be. Check out Canine Gestation. It offers a week-by-week guide that may prove helpful.

Aside from that, it's normal for pregnant dogs to go through appetite changes, and some dogs do eat less near the end of the pregnancy when the stomach is so crowded by the expanding uterus. It's alright to let your dog have some human food, but I still recommend mixing it in with her regular kibble. Soaking the kibble with low sodium chicken broth may also entice her to eat it.

We also have one more article I think you may find handy. Read Delivering Puppies to help you prepare for the big event.

I hope you find this info useful and that all goes well. Let us know when your dog delivers. :)

I would like to know what are the early visual signs if my female is pregnant

-- Contributed by: Enter your name here

I have a 5yr.old xx-small Chi. Her weight at last check up was 3 lbs. 2 ozs. She went into heat the 1st week of July, so I found a male that was her size and they were locked for approx. 45 min. Now she is cuddle-bug, her nipples are extended, and her belly is just a little harder than normal. I have scheduled a vet appt. for her and the vet told me that they are pregnant for 60days, so she is going to be approx. 45days at the time of her appt. in Aug.19. and she is going to just to feel around. But is that going to be enough? In order to get an accurate count they need to do an x-ray. But will that hurt her puppies and will it tell us how many puppies she will have? Thank you, Worried new mom

I have a female Chihuahua that I believe is pregnant. I am not sure on the exact date but I feel she is getting close. Her abdomen has grown and her nipples are larger, especially the back two. I know that she is farther than a month and I believe she may be around six weeks. I have a concern for her; she does not want to eat any of her dog food and only wants to eat human meat products, like turkey, chicken, or beef. Is that normal and is it ok for her to eat only that? In addition, I have not felt the puppies move yet, is that also normal and when should I be able to feel them move? This eating problem has only occurred in the last day or two, and she has gained weight before this. Could this be a sign of going into labor? She is not panting and is little needy, but does not exhibit any other symptoms. Please help! Thank you.

I have a chihuahua and she is having 5 puppies. Or at least it's been 60 days and still nothing. Only the last end of her nipples are swollen and she's very thin. The vet didn't say anything about her weight and wasn't that helpful. Should I still be concerned?

-- Contributed by: Rosa

Hi Maggie,

This actually sounds quite normal. Up until about 5-6 weeks gestation, there is little change in the abdomen. You might notice some slight swelling of the breasts and perhaps just a hint of enlargement of the belly, but 4 week embryos are as small as peas, and they don't begin rapid growth until around 6 weeks.

Chihuahuas usually have small litters of 1-3 pups, so they often don't get very large until the last two weeks of gestation.

So, things sound normal at this point, but we do have an article that I think you'll find helpful. Check out Canine Gestation. It has a basic pregnancy timeline that lists various changes during various weeks. Hopefully all of this info puts your mind at ease. :)

Okay I have a few questions. This is obviously my first and only chihuahua and I'm a little scared about her being pregnant. She went into heat about two and half weeks ago and was possibly in contact with a neighborhood boy chihuahua in the last week. Since then I have noticed she is no longer in heat. The swelling of her little area has gone down and she is in a better mood. But I recently noticed three days ago that her teats still look swollen and kinda hard at the base. The bottom of her stomach thats closest to her lil' area is slightly bigger. This was her first heat and she is only going on nine months old. And it's hard to tell based on her appetite or mood because she eats all the time and she loves to be held and pet. Will mating cause her to not be in heat? And how likely is this a false alarm. I never seen them together but he is always running around and has come to our house several times since she has been in heat. He lives maybe a block a way. Is it possible for him to know when she is in heat? Thanks for your time. I am really new to this and hope you can shed some light on this for me.

-- Contributed by: Summer

Hi Sassy,

It sounds as though this dog may very well be pregnant. I know surrendering her to a rescue center will be difficult, but it may be the best thing if you truly can't cover veterinary fees. The rescue vet will look after her and perform a C-section if it becomes necessary.

Best wishes for your situation.

I have a 9 month Chi that just came to me out out of heat, and she was still spotting when I got her. Now her nipples are getting full feeling and hard. She has thrown up a few times as well. And am beginning to notice the affection issues are growing more and more... I plan to take her to the vet ASAP... or find a good home for her.. we are just not finincial stable for all the risks involved in this type of dog. She was givin to me from someone else. But we have grown to love her as our pet also...

Hi....how will I know if my chihuahua got pregnant?

My female chi is 3 years old. The vet told me it's best for her to have babies after the 3 years. My friend had her dog mail chi stay with us about 3 weeks while my chi was in heat. I never saw a "tie". I did see my chi 'humping' him on the face but everytime he tried to get on her she would growl and turn around. I had them in a small room where I could see/hear a lot of things going on but I never saw a tie. Could it had happened in the evening??? I'm not sure if it worked.

Do you have some thoughts to share with me on this? Thanks

-- Contributed by: rose

Hi Gina, and welcome to the site.

Many Chihuahuas require a C-section, but certainly not all, so it's a case-by-case assessment. It would be a good idea to discuss the breeding with your vet beforehand so he/she is aware that there may be an eventual need for a C around whatever your dog's potential due date turns out to be.

As for what to watch for to know if a C-section may be necessary, we have the info you need in our article on Delivering Puppies. Check that out, and feel free to come back with more questions if you need to. We're happy to help. :)

-- Contributed by: Joni

Hi Donna,

There's no need to worry at this point. The back teats grow quicker than the front ones. Additionally, some dogs don't begin to produce milk until the litter is born. Be sure to let your female eat a couple of the afterbirths. They contain oxytocin, and this stimulates milk production. :)

-- Contributed by: Kelly

i have a chihuahua that will be 7 weeks pregnant in 2 days her back 2 teets are swollen and the next 2 are slightly swollen i have not seen any signs of milk yet and they arent as swollen as i would think they should be. I am concerned that she wont have milk for her pups. Will the milk come in over the next week to 2 weeks?

-- Contributed by: donna

Hi Lyn,

We have a couple of articles that I think you'll find helpful.

The list of symptoms will give you something to compare your own dog's changes. If you decide you really think she might be pregnant, your vet can check for pregnancy with a blood test.

As for the risks that come with pregnancy, Chihuahuas do seem to have a harder time delivering, and they often need a C-section. This is something to discuss ahead of time with your vet in the event that a blood test proves your Chi is pregnant. Be sure to discuss the size of the stud dog so your vet has a good idea of what your Chi may face during delivery.

Thanks for your question, and I hope this info helps. Be sure to come back and check out our other dog pregnancy topics if you need more help. Good luck.

I have two dog's in my house , but my other dog is bigger then my Chi . I think they might have had a secret session.. Her nipples have grown bigger , she's more affectionate and wants more attention , she doesn't really eat , she sleeps a lot now . My question is .. 1 . If she is pregnant , is there a chance she might die during giving birth?

-- Contributed by: Lyn

Hi Mari, and welcome to the site. Let me take your questions one at a time.

First, I think it's very possible your dog could be pregnant. You've already begun to notice definite changes.

Many females will begin to show signs of pregnancy two to three weeks after the heat cycle has ended, although it can be more difficult to be sure about it until the pups begin to gain size around six weeks gestation.

As for your dog's weight gain, I wouldn't really worry about it at this time because she won't be able to eat as well later in the pregnancy when her stomach gets crowded by her expanding uterus. However, you don't want to see her become too obese because this could make her delivery more difficult. You can always cut back just a little on the food if she seriously begins to look overweight, but chances are good that nature will take care of it all.

I have a few articles that I think you'll find helpful to your entire experience. Check out:

Thanks for your questions, and I hope you'll keep us posted on how things go. Good luck!

HI,

I actually thought that she was done with mating since it was her4 th week. well they happen to get stuck a week after her last mating. she is eating alot, very sffecionste, a little bit bigger than normal, her teats are larger...to me she looks pregnant...mind you she has always been a very picky eater and now she eats anything that comes her way... it's been 2 weeks now...now my question is this....

1. do you think she might bw pregnant? 2. how soon after mating would she show that she's pregnant? 3. should i worry about her getting so big so fast it's been only 2 weeks since mating.... 4. what are the signs of pregnancy for dogs???

Hi Myda,

If your dog is pregnant, she's about halfway through so aborting the litter probably isn't an option. I really don't think she's going into season again this soon. I have never heard of any dog having monthly cycles.

That said, it would be a good idea to let your vet examine your pet and try to confirm the pregnancy. Your vet will give you advice based on your dog's condition, but things will probably work out alright if she is healthy. I've bred a few Chihuahua litters in my day, and I can tell you that C-sections are not uncommon no matter what age you breed your female or what her size is. As long as your vet is very careful with the anesthesia, it should all turn out fine if she's not able to deliver on her own.

Thanks for your question, and I hope everything works out in your favor. Keep us posted. :)

-- Contributed by: Kelly

I have an 11 month old Chihuahua, great health and she's fairly thin compared to my 5 year old Chi (since age has caught up with him and he's pretty stout, but when he was her age he was about her size).

About a month ago or so she went into heat right after we came back from a family vacation and I believe that my Male Chi might have tied with her during that time.

I've noticed that recently her nipples have started getting large (like they were when she was in heat) and her vulva has slightly started to swell again. Now I wouldn't guess that she was going into heat again, but is that possible? I've read that ...es can go into heat once ever six months or every month depending on the dog. Also, she's become more affectionate (but she's always been the type of dog that's glued to my hip.. or leg) and she hasn't been eating as much as she used to. I've also noticed that every time that I turn around she's sleeping and isn't playing as much as she usually does.

I'm concerned that she might be pregnant and I'm unsure about how to go about the process if she's pregnant? I don't wish to abort the litter, but is that an option? And what are the options for letting her go through this litter? I've read that Chi's shouldn't be bred until they're two years old... which is why I'm concerned for my baby girl. Thanks, Myda

Hi Nicole,

My experience has been that Chihuahuas have a higher than average number of C-sections even if they are mated to other Chihuahuas. You'll have to keep a close eye on your dog during the delivery in case she isn't able to push the pups out on her own.

It may help to read our article on Delivering Puppies to have a better idea of what to expect when the big moment comes.

Thanks for your question, and I truly hope you don't encounter any problems.

-- Contributed by: Kelly

My question is a lot like everyone else's. I have a 9 month old Chihuahua and I am pretty sure she is pregnant she is showing all the sinces but my problem is, if she is pregnant she is pregnant by a border collie. Now my Chi's mom only had 3 puppies so im not expecting her to have many and the border collie is really small for his breed. Now I was told that if she doesn't have to give birth to more than two dogs that she will be fine. But I am really scared of lossing her. I just don't have the money to take her to the vet about this situation. So what else can I do to help her. She is still eating like normal she is just a lot more affectionate. So please help.

Hello,

I just wanted to follow up with you. My chih is doing good she is finnaly out of heat, thank goodnes. I didn't think she would ever stop hookin up with the male, it was about to drive me crazy every time i turned around they where hooked up.lol. But anyways i was woundering if you could tell me anything i could do to help her have a heathy preg. I'm not for sure she is but i have wached her and her belly is geting harder and her nipps are droping a lil and pink. But i want to treat her as she is prego and try to keep her helthy till i can tak her to the vet.
-- Contributed by: Jessica

Hi Grace,

That discharge might indicate that one of the puppies' placentas may have separated slightly from the uterine lining. Your vet is right, this shouldn't be much of a problem but you should take extra care to keep your dog from partaking in strenuous activities. Thankfully there's only a week left to go. Basically, I think it will be alright, so just try to keep your dog relaxed.

Thanks for your question, and best wishes for the upcoming litter. :)

i ask you something, im very worried about my pregnant chi she'll be giving birth this coming september 15 one week to go, but yesterday something discharge from her vagina with a brown or black color, is this normal pls help me my vet told us in a text message that this is normal but take care as much as possible not to be a premature. pls help me what will i do? im afraid for my chi....

Hi Jessica,

She'll probably be fine. There's just a slight risk for infection when the vulva is in it's current state. :)

oh, well i just give her a bath last night. Should i have not done that? What will happen if since i gave her a bath?

-- Contributed by: jessica

Hi Jessica,

I didn't realize your female was still in season and actively breeding. That odor you detect is quite natural at this time, and it would be better to refrain from bathing your female until her heat cycle has ended.

Thanks for clarifying! :)

Okay. Thanks. Well it looks like i may have some pups on the way, cuz today she got around the same male chih and got hooked up agine. I've tried to keep them apart, its not working. lol, so im going to take her to the vet in 28 days to find out. Well thank you for everything, I'm sure i will be back with more questions.

Hi Jessica,

I'm really glad you're finding the site helpful. :)

Sometimes a female will be smelly after she's been bred. It's alright to go ahead and give her a bath to see if it eliminates the smell. If the smell returns, and especially if it grows stronger, you'll want to have the vet check her for a urinary tract infection. These are not uncommon after a breeding has taken place, and they are generally easy to treat when caught early.

Keep us posted on what you find out.

Hi Jessica,

Yes, it is possible for a five minute tie to result in a pregnancy, so it would be best to care for your female as though she is pregnant unless your vet examines her and says she isn't.

Hi Emma,

I can't be certain your dog is pregnant based on the symptoms you describe, but if there was a breeding, there's at least a 50/50 chance that your Chi could be carrying a litter.

Check out our article on Dog Pregnancy Symptoms and see if your female is exhibiting any other signs. You may want to take her to your vet for a blood test to detect pregnancy hormones.

If she is pregnant, the site has a lot of articles on the topic that you'll find helpful.

Best wishes.

Hi Sherry,

Considering your dog's health problems, I would have your vet examine her for pregnancy right away. It does sound as though she could be pregnant, and this could add additional stress with the liver disease. Best to let the true expert guide you through this sitation. Call your vet right away.

Thanks, and good luck.

my chi is 1-1/2 years old. her teats are huge and leaking a lot. she is small. her vulva is a little bigger. she has not been acting like herself for some time now. she is constantly licking her vulva in the past few weeks. she has been vomiting two to three times a days for the past week or so, but i didn't connect it to a possible pregnancy because it's a symptom of her possible liver shunt. i think she has had a false pregnancy before. what is the likelihood of her being pregnant? I am very concerned with the possibility of a pregnancy as she has health problems including a liver shunt. If she is pregnant, are complications more likely?

Hi Valerie,

Yes, pregnancy is a possibility in this situation. I recommend you ask your vet to examine your dog so you'll know for sure. This is easy to do with a blood test.

Thanks for your question. :)

I have a 7 month old chihuahua that statred her heat about 6weeks ago and im thinking she's pregnant her tits are swollen and her vulva is still very swollen. Is that possible she is pregnant she has beem around a 4yr old male?

Hi Wanda,

It may actually be possible for your male puppy to produce a litter with your adult female. Males usually become fertile between four and six months old. That said, it's still not the ideal situation. You male is far too young to expend so much energy on breeding behavior, and he will likely wear himself out. I would try to keep them separated until the heat cycle is finished. It will be safe to allow them to breed on your female's next cycle.

Thanks for your question. :)

hi my chihuahua is two years old and i think shes pregnant what can i do to get ready for her do date

-- Contributed by: norma

is it true that the first time the chi gets pregnant it can loose all the puppies? and how many pups do the chi's normally have?

  • Hi Alysha,

In my personal experience, Chihuahuas are more difficult to successfully breed than many other dogs. C-sections are frequently required to get the pups out, although some bitches can deliver naturally.

On average, Chi's tend to have two to three puppies, but I once had a litter of five. If you know how many puppies were in the litter your bitch came from, that might give you an idea of how many pups she might wind up having. The number of puppies also highly depends on when she was ovulating and when the sperm were alvailable for fertilization.

Thanks for your question, and good luck. :)

Hi,

I have a 7 month old chihuahua who I think might be pregnant. I am very concerned because I know she is too young. I also have a 3 year old male. When she went in to heat I put diapers on both of them to keep them from mating. I came home from work one day and my male had chewed his diaper off and hers was torn open in that area. It has been a month since the first day she went in to heat. Her teats have started to swell in the last week or so and her vulva is still very swollen. When do you think I should take her to the vet? Do you think she could be having a false pregnancy even though it is her first heat? Could she have symptons this early? What should I do to prevent them from mating in the future? I really hope she is not pregnant, she is still a puppy herself! Thank for your help!

  • Hi Julie,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation, but you did try to prevent a breeding. Dog's can be very determined.

At this point, your bitch could be pregnant or it could be a false pregnancy. My advice is to wait one more week and then ask your vet to perform a blood test to determine if she really is pregnant. If she is, you can discuss your options with the vet and he/she will advise you on whether your little Chi can safely make it through the pregnancy.

Thanks for your question, and best of luck that your bitch isn't pregnant this time around. It would definitely make everything much simpler.

My little Sandy is about 12 yrs old. She has never hooked up except tonight. She was hooked for about 10 min. Should I worry? She wont make it through a pregnancy/delivery in my opinion.

  • Hi Tina,

Dogs don't go through menopause, so they can possibly become pregnant in their twilight years if a breeding takes place.

Under the circumstances, it would be a good idea to let your vet know what happened and see what he/she recommends.

Thanks for your question, and I hope everything works out for the best.

Hi I'm concerned that my little Mimzie might be pregnant. I got her from a breeder Sept. 25,2007 and she has bigger teats, very tired sleeps usually every hour, never seems to be full after her feeding, very close to me, a little irritable, beginning to make a nest with my sheets, and she also well this evening (Nov.8,2007) I saw movement like a lump going up and down. I know its not her pulse. I am scared and I have read that chihuahuas do have sometimes complications. And she will only really allow me to hold her and do anything with her. She's not mean to others just runs away from them. Is there any advice you could give me? By how much percent do you think Mimzie is pregnant?

Hi Hilary,

It really does sound as though your dog is pregnant. Yes, some Chihuahuas do have a difficult time with the delivery, but not all. I actually recommend that you take your bitch to the vet for a check up to confirm the pregnancy. This will give you an opportunity to discuss the C-section procedure in case she needs one during the delivery. You know you'll be able to reach your vet during regular office hours, but you need to have a plan in case your bitch goes into labor and has trouble during the middle of the night.

Thanks for your question, and I hope that everything turns out alright.
