Hi Sarah,

That actually sounds more like your friend's dog has an anal gland problem and will likely need to see a vet for treatment. Check out the following articles for more helpful info.

Thanks for your question. :)

Hi Nicole,

Since I'm not a vet, it would be best if you called your vet and asked for follow up advice directly. I'm a little concerned that your dog hasn't gotten back to a regular schedule with his stools, and that this could be a sign that there is some constipation.

First and foremost, it's important to encourage your dog to drink fresh water to help his system operate as it should.

When you call your vet, you should also ask if it would be alright to add a couple of spoonfuls of plain canned pumpkin to your dog's daily ration. This is a good source of insoluable fiber, and it can be an aid when dealing with constipation. If your vet gives the okay, you can go ahead and try it. I just wouldn't advise doing it until you get the okay because you don't want to make your dog's situation worse.

Thanks for your question, and I hope your dog is back to normal soon.

Hi Kelly, This past weekend my 1 1/2 year old lab was kept over night for constipation. They needed to administer an enema for relief. At time of discharge no instructions were provided, as far as diet, prevention, s/s to watch for. Initially I brought him in because he was lacking an appetite. Do you have any recommendations for me as far as treatment and things to look out for. I am just concerned because he has only had 2 bowel movements since he came home. Typically he goes around 3-4 times/day. He is also what seems to be coughing. But I am not sure if he is nauseous and trying to vomit! What do you think?

Hi Nadine,

Sometimes it's helpful to add two tablespoons of plain canned pumpkin to a dog's dinner to help relieve constipation. Pumpkin is rich in insoluable fiber so it helps push things through. Try this for a couple of days and see if your dog is going regularly again. In the meantime, don't hesitate to call your vet if the problem becomes worse.

Thanks for your question, and I hope your dog adjusts to the change in environment soon.
