Hi Lyn, and welcome to the site.

I agree with you that you and your husband should really research any breed you're interested in before you make a commitment. My sister happens to raise German Shepherds, so I know a bit about them. Once you get through the puppy stage, these are actually very calm house dogs. They are strong, but they do not have a super high energy level like some working and sporting dogs do. If your husband is prepared for daily walks, you could do well with a Shepherd.

What I really recommend is going to visit a few breeders and see what they say about this breed's exercise requirements. Breeders are always the best resource for this type of information, and it will help you both make a decision whether a German Shepherd is the right dog for your home. Good luck with your search. :)

I need some advice from someone please. My husband really wants to get a German Shepherd. I have no problem with him getting a dog, but I think he needs to think long and hard about this. Our home is only 1600 sq. ft with a very small back yard. I personally don't feel that either is big enough for a large dog. I love animals and I think it would be unfair to the animal to have such limited space and yard. I feel that the dog might very well become unhappy due to lack of stimulation and running space. I know my husband will spend a great deal of time with the dog and give it ample exercise because he's retired. Is that really enough?

Hi Beth,

Why don't you try checking with your local police and fire departments to find out where they get their police and rescue trained dogs from. That would be a good start, and then you can contact those establishments to find out how they go about training. My understanding is that a lot of these training facilities begin working with young puppies, but it's possible that they would be willing to work with your dog if she passes an evaluation. It's worth a shot.

The breed you mentioned is actually the Chihuahua. The visitor just didn't know how to spell it, and Chihuahua is certainly one of the more difficult ones to sound out. It even took me a while to learn how to spell it without looking it up.

Thanks for your questions, and I hope you're enjoying the site. You'll find a couple articles about service dogs in our Dog Information category. :)

Just wondering. I have a great German Shepherd that is two years old and can teach her stuff within one hour without treats and that I think would be a great police or search and rescue dog and looking for places to place her but was wondering what is a chawawos from an earlier comment? I have never heard of that bread. Can you send pic's or something. I know of a lot but also know that there are a lot of others out there that I don't know about.

If you know of places I can contact about my Sherpherd, please let me know.

Hi Bill,

Kudos for saving those pups from a less than certain future.

I did a little searching, but I couldn't come up with any direct links to offer you. I think the best starting point would be to contact your local police department and ask if they are willing to evaluate the pups for possible police dog training. If they aren't able to use them, perhaps they can direct you to a nearby town that can. Good luck in your search!

I have 2 German shepherd puppies I would like to donate for the police, military, or blind. They are both smart dogs. I got these puppies from a guy that did not care. His dog had 9 pups and the wild animals got all but these 2. I want to keep both but can not. I have 2 poddles, and 2 chawawos. Six dogs is to much for anyone. Every where I check in North east Texas want to kill them. I WILL NOT let that happen. If you can help me in contacting one of the about groups PLEASE help me.
