Hi Dean,

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your dog and that you're having such difficulty finding a new puppy. Did any of the shelters offer to put you on their waiting list? Some shelters will have you apply for an adoption so you can go through the approval process and then help you connect with the right puppy as one becomes available. If you haven't tried this route, it may be another option.

Good luck with your search. :)

Hi Theresa,

Have you tried checking your local shelter? Pet supply stores often have fliers posted on community bulletin boards for people who need to rehome pups and adults. You may be able to find a canine companion that way. Good luck. :)

Hi Lola,

I'm sorry to hear you're having a difficult time finding a furry companion. If you're responding to a newspaper ad that says "free puppies", and the owner wants to charge you after you get there, be sure to let the newspaper know. Many newspapers now base the price of their pet adds on the asking price for puppies, so it's fine to bring false advertising to their attention as long as you're sure you have your facts straight.

It's true that shelters do charge adoption fees, but if you think about the cost of vaccinations, spaying and neutering and miscellaneous care often involved in a rescue, the fees are usually about right. Unfortunately, there's really no such thing as a free puppy when you take into account a lifetime of veterinary care, dog food and other supplies.

Thanks for sharing your experience, and I do hope you're able to find a puppy within your means.

Free puppies? Ha!!! Every puppy add I find marked free just means that they are too expensive to list. Even shelters now charge upwards of $300 to adopt. I know, I've been looking. The only thing I wanted for my 25th birthday was a small, female puppy but, I can't afford hundreds of dollars.

Hi Jeffrey,

It's usually better to search for a puppy locally. That way you have a chance to get to know the pup to make sure it's the right fit. I recommend searching your local shelter and keeping watch in the newspaper for free puppy ads.

Good luck with your search!

Hi Dominique,

It can be- as long as that puppy lands in the right home with a responsible owner who can provide it with good food, shelter and veterinary care. :)

I grabbed my purebred Beagle off the internet for free and He has been awesome. I checked his temper and thoroughly examined his house and asked pointed questions. I have had very few problems with him. I took him to the vet and put him onto a diet. Not every free puppy has issues or will be dropped off. I have rescued other dogs before and held them until I found trustworthy situations. I know still where they all are. I promise anyone I place dogs with they can return them to me no questions asked and I checked on them periodically. I have re-adopted one so far in about three years doing this.

Hi Puppy Lover,

You don't have to give up your dream of dog ownership. Just make it a long term goal. You can work to save up money and put it aside for when the time is right. Adopting a needy pet is less expensive than purchasing a purebred, and any dog can become a loving companion regardless of its breed heritage. The money you save by adopting could be put toward paying for much needed vaccinations to protect your future pet's health. Don't give up, just decide on a plan and work toward it. Good luck!

Hi Ashley,

It may be better to look for a puppy locally because then you won't have the expense of shipping the puppy to your town. Many newspapers sometimes have adds for free puppies in the pet section. You may also find a free puppy ad on the bulletin board at your local feed store.

Thanks for visiting, and good luck with your search. :)

Hi Monick,

Be sure to check your local newspaper for free puppies in the pet section. Looking locally means you'll get to meet each puppy before you choose the one that is right for you. Your local shelters may also have what you're looking for. :)

Hi Terenda,

I'm so sorry to hear about your mom's dog. I think your best option for finding a new pet is to search locally at a shelter. This way you can be sure that the dog you're getting is compatible with you and your mom, and you'll also avoid having to have a puppy shipped to you. Shipping is very expensive.

Good luck in your search.
