Hi Penny, and welcome to the site.
It sounds like your dog might have a urinary tract infection. Usually by the time you notice blood, the infection is fairly advanced. This could also explain the house accidents. The best thing you can do is try to collect a sample and take your dog to the vet for an exam to see if this is indeed an infection or something more. Urinary tract infections are usually cured with a round of antibiotics.
Thanks for your question, and I hope your dog is back to normal soon.
-- Contributed by: Kellyour 3 yr old St. Bernard/Lab mix has urinated by the door several times in the last few weeks. Last night we noticed a blood clot. Her urine also has a very strong odor. Almost like fish. What do we could this be?
-- Contributed by: Penny EricksonHi Paula,
It really does sound like a crystal is blocking your dog's urethra somewhere along the tract. The best thing you can do is take him to your local emergency vet. If he can't urinate, his bladder will still continue to fill and bloat. This can be a serious and painful situation, so better to address it immediately.
Best wishes for your dog's health.
-- Contributed by: KellyMy dog, a Yorkie, was fine yesterday. Today he can't seem to urinate like usual. A few drops come out, but he seems uncomfotable. The urine is not comming out in a normal "stream". He is eating & drinking, but I can tell he just dosent feel well. My Vet is closed because of the holidays. Could this be a urinary tract invection or stones? Thanks much, Paula.

Have you spoken to your vet about this problem yet? If not, it's very important that you do so soon. Dogs can leak urine for a variety of reasons. Sometimes an undetected bladder infection can actually lead to bladder scarring. This makes it difficult for the bladder to stretch and hold the urine, so it is simply released. Does your dog show any signs she knows she is urinating, or does she seem oblivious to it? Most dogs with this type of condition seem to be aware they are doing it. Stones and growths can also partially block the urethra keeping the dog from fully emptying its bladder. This causes the bladder to enlarge which in turn forces some of the urine out around the blockage, hence the incontinence.
There are even more causes of incontinence in pets including senility issues, diseases like polyuria and weakened muscles in the area, but as you can see, it will really take your vet's help to diagnose this issue and treat your dog.
Thank you for sharing your question, and I truly hope your vet can make a quick diagnosis and help your dog. Best wishes.

My 8 yr old female German Sheppard Mix is leaking urine. Quite a bit really. For about 6 mos now and getting worse. She's also licking her genitals quite often, including her anus. She just pees while she's laying down. Sometimes 3 or 4 times a day, or an evening. I don't see any blood in it, and otherwise she's fine. Any thoughts? Thanks...MJ

It's very possible that your pet has a urinary tract infection. This sometimes happens as a result of the breeding. The best thing you can do is let your vet know what you've observed and see if he/she feels your dog needs an antibiotic.
Thanks for your question, and I hope the problem clears up quickly.
-- Contributed by: Kellymy 2.5 year old shih tzu is about 4 weeks pregnant and I noticed this morning when she went out to urinate that there was a puddle of blood. She seems fine other than that. She went out again a while later and there was still blood in her urine. Should I be concerned? What do you recommend I do?
-- Contributed by: SimoneHi Lee,
It sounds as though the new diet is doing what it was intended to do. You should follow up with your vet about when the recheck is due. I'm not sure whether you're considering taking your dog off the new diet, but check with your vet before you do. It's possible that crystal production would return if you put your dog back on her old diet.
Thanks for your question, and best wishes that your dog gets a clean bill of health.
-- Contributed by: Kellymy dog has bee diagonised with crystals in her kidneys and bladder. I cant afford and operation. She is on unuary s/o biscuits that cost me $80.00 au a bag how long should she be on this diet before I take her back to the vet for tests. She has no more blood in her urine and in not struggling to pee
-- Contributed by: lee pitcherHi Edel,
It sounds as though your dog may have some type of urinary tract/yeast infection. If the problem goes on too long the infection can reach her bladder, so it would be best to make a veterinary appointment right away. The vet will prescribe an antibiotic for a bacterial infection, but your dog will need an antifungal medication if it does turn out to be a yeast infection. Neither of these types of infections will go away on their own, so please take action quickly in order to bring your dog some relief.
Thanks for your question, and best wishes for your dog's speedy recovery.
-- Contributed by: Kellyhi my 18 month old female dog has a strong odur which appears to be coming from her vagina, its a fishy smell. she has being spayed and seems to have alot of discomfort in the area. she finds it hard to walk and licks the area alot. when she does move she runs really fast to find a place to sit down again and licks the area straight away. what should i do? thanks-edel
-- Contributed by: edelHi Nikki,
Have you ever had your dog tested for a urinary tract or yeast infection? The creme may cause a reduction in symptoms, but from what you're saying, the symptoms return. It would be better to find the source of the irritation and treat that to eliminate the symptoms altogether.
Thanks for sharing your situation. :)
-- Contributed by: Kellyhi my dachshund's vulva sometimes gets sore and she licks it alot and drags it along the floor(not worms) when this happens i bathe it often and put sudocrem on it and it usually clears up
-- Contributed by: nikkiHi Talisha,
I think it would be a good idea to let your vet examine the rash on your dog's behind. You need to know what's causing it before you can be sure how to treat it. You'll also want to discuss the recent house accidents to find out if the two things tie together. Hopefully your vet can swiftly set thte situation right.
Thanks for your question.
-- Contributed by: KellyHI MY DOG IS THREE YEARS OLD RECENTLY WE DISCOVED A RASH ON HIS BUTT HE KEEPS BITTING IT AND SCRATCHING IT AND LICKING IT HE ALSO BEEN PEEING IN THE HOUSE BIG PUDDLES OF URINE PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN!!!!!
-- Contributed by: TALISHAplease help!
My ...'s vulva is red and the skin is raw. I have already been to 2 vets regarding it. The first vet said that she had to much protein in her urine and gave her anti-biotics and a cream. Every time she urinated I wash her down and applied the cream as stated by the vet. After the treatment I returned to the vet who tested her urine again and said it was okay. But the skin continued to stay the same. I then took her to a wellrespected vet who said that she probably had to much acid in her urine and nothing really could be done. It was just one of those things! He told me to buy a cream from my local chemist. It is use for thrush in women. Is this right. Would it do any good? I don't know what to think. Please help as my ... must be in a lot of pain when she urinates.
Thax linda
-- Contributed by: LindaHi Steve,
It's difficult to say what's going on here. Has your dog recently come out of a heat cycle, or is she due to have one very soon? If so, the discharge could be related to the hormone flux. It could also be an early sign of an infection, but typically you would only suspect this if the discharge had an odd color or a bad odor. Since the discharge is still clear and you don't mention it is coming out in copious amounts, my advice is to keep an eye on your dog, and watch for other symptoms to appear. If they do, don't hesitate to make an appointment for her with your vet.
Best wishes. :)
-- Contributed by: KellyHi, my dog has a clear gell type of discharge from her vulva, what could this be?
-- Contributed by: steveHi Mary,
It sounds as though your dog has some kind of an infection. This could be just a urinary tract infection, but if he has been breeding any females, he could have picked up something else. I would definitely bring this to your vet's attention right away.
Thanks for your question.
-- Contributed by: KellyI have a 4 year old Lab. He has a green(small amount) of discharge coming out of his penis. What might this be? Thank you.
-- Contributed by: MaryHi my shepard mix female is 1 1/2 years old. the past few days she has had a foul smell like concentrated urine. she is trained and last nite and today she urinated on my carpet. i am calling the vet i think she may have a urinary tract infection. the only problem she is petrified of the vet what do i do????
- Hi Eileen,
Even though your dog is afraid of going to the vet, it is really the best thing for her. It sounds as though her urine may be concentrated. That would lead to a stronger than normal odor. Does she seem to be drinking less water than usual. Keep an eye on this so you can let your vet know if this is the case. These symptoms could signal a UTI, but your vet may also decide to do further testing.
Best wishes that the problem is resolved quickly, and thanks for your question.
-- Contributed by: eileenHi, My beagle is trained to go on pads and outside. Today she urinated on the carpet. When I took her outside, she did #1 and she hollered a little then she did # 2. We were on our way back in she was constantly #1. I picked her up to look and there was a little blood on her . She has been spayed for over a year. Should I take her to the vet or wi=
- Hi Carrie, the yelping indicates pain, so I would definitely take your dog to the vet. Best wishes.
Hi Jennifer,
It sounds like your dog may have a kidney infection. This is not something that normally clears up on it's own, and it can grow worse, so I really think you should set up an appointment with your vet to have him tested. He will probably need to be on antibiotics for a while to clear the infection out of his system.
Best wishes for your dog's speedy recovery.
-- Contributed by: Kellyhi, my dog goes on wee wee pads. and as he went, most of it seemed light yellow as normal, but the final drop came out a dark pink color, which resembled blood. it is very little and i dabbed his penis afterwards to make sure that my eyes weren't deceiving me, but the tissue had a light pink color on it. his behavior has not changed and he seems fine, but is this something that i should be very concerned about?
