Hi Cassie,

I wouldn't consider this situation normal. Dogs occasionally eat grass, and some people think it's their natural instinct to do so when something is upsetting their stomach. What you're describing seems to go beyond that. Right now, I recommend you try to prevent your dog from eating grass and see if that puts an end to the vomiting. This will give you a chance to see how your dog is really feeling. Keep in mind that grass contains any chemicals that might have been used on the lawn, and this could also induce vomiting. If your dog is showing any sign of illness once you stop him from eating grass, you'll want to give your vet a call.

Thanks for sharing your situation, and best wishes for your dog's health.

Hi Rex,

I think it would be good to have your vet examine your dog and try to diagnose a reason for the weight loss. You should also try to keep your dog from eating grass if at all possible since he might be picking up lawn chemicals or pollution from it that is contributing to his illness.

Thanks for sharing your situation, and I do hope the vet is able to reverse your dog's condition and bring him back to full health. Best wishes.

hello-my dog eats grass and throws it back up -he's losing weight

Hi Jen,

The problem bears further exploration. It's possible your dog has eaten something that hasn't agreed with her, and the second episode might be related to her eating more of it. Look around the house and yard for anything unusual. Try to make the cat box off limits. Even the trash container could be a source of the problem. Some dogs love to steal garbage, so try to keep a lid on the pail.

Don't hesitate to call your vet and let him/her know the vomiting has resumes. Your dog may need to be scoped to figure out what is going on.

Thanks for your question, and I hope your dog is back to normal soon.

I dont think my dog ate grass but maybe cat poop. 3 days ago my 2 1/2 year old Boston Terrier started vomiting in the middle of the nite and the next day. We took her to the vet, she stayed overnite and came home the next day. They did blood work but not sure what was wrong. They put her on antibiotic and she did good for 2 days. Then she vomited again this afternoon. Has been eating, drinking and peeing and pooping. But why would she still be sick?

Hi Angela,

It sounds like a digestive disturbance to me. Is there any chance your dog ate some leftovers or snuck something out of the trash? Either of these might account for a common stomach upset.

For today, I'd keep a close watch on your dog. Keep track of whether he potties anymore, and try to notice if you hear a lot of noise coming from his stomach. Also see if you can coax him to take some fresh water or broth. If your dog tries to swallow but it comes back up, or if his stomach becomes loud and seems abnormally active or bloated, you'll want to contact your vet right away.

Best wishes that this is nothing serious.

Hi Ernest,

I can't be absolutely sure, but I believe your new pet is seriously ill. Since nothing is truly going in and nothing is coming out the other end, there's a possibility that there is a blockage in your dog's digestive tract. It's even possible that this is becoming a case of torsion where the stomach twists closed at both ends. Does your dog's abdoming seem bloated? Can you hear a lot of snapping and growling?

My best advice is to take this dog to the vet as fast as you can get her there. Best wishes that things turn out alright.

Hello I have a 6 month old Boxer, I bought her from another family who is getting stationed at another base. When I first bought her she seemed happy. When I brought her home she seemed sad and was not excited anymore. She has not been able to hold down any water or food. She hasn't had a bowl movement. Her vomit is still clear and her food comes out undigested. Is she just trying to get used to her new enviorment or is she very ill.

Hi Amy,

There are a number of things that could cause diarrhea. Frontline has been known to cause anaphylactic reactions, but I haven't heard of diarrhea being associated with it. This could be a short-lived virus, or perhaps the dogs ate something that made them sick. My advice is to take them to the vet if the illness continues or the rest of the dogs come down with it.

Best wishes.

I have a Chihuahau that had diahrea for a couple days then my other dog got it along with vomiting several times a day. I haven't changed their food or anything else except put frontline on them. Could the frontline make them sick? If not what could it be? I also have two more dogs in the house that are fine.

Hi Kristen,

Although your dog's condition is serious, this doesn't sound like a case of stomach torsion because your dog wouldn't be able to throw up. Please take your dog to the vet right away.

Best wishes that everything turns out alright.

my puppy is throwing up a brownish color.. and she cant always throw up either. she's thrown more than 20 times within the past 10 hours. there's nothing in the house that she could have gotten into cuz everything is high above her. she's a carien terrier. is there a chance that she could have twisted stomach?

My 2yr old schnauzer has been acting a little weird, he "hacks" 5-10 times a day, but nothing ever comes up. Today, he ate grass and threw up. He is still active and eats, I had him treated for "kennel cough" but the hacking is still there, any ideas?

Hi Joe, my first thought was kennel cough too. If the condition persists, you might want to have your dog retested. A chest X-ray may also be useful to diagnose what's going on.

Best wishes that your dog gets over those coughing spells soon.

Hi,

Recently my little terrier mix started to act lethargic, she would act normal on walks and when someone comes to the door, bark as always, but in between, she would just lay in her bed and not move, even when I come home from work. I thought maybe she got ahold of something when my mom's boyfriend came over. They had eaten Thai food and she started acting this way the afternoon after they had it.

She pases around my grandmothers room when I enter the living room (Both are connected) as if I should follow her. She seemed to get better after i switched her food to rice and broth. She also will not jump up and down off the couch or beds. If she ate something bad, wouldnt it be fixed by now? She's been this way for two days.

  • Hi Katy,

It definitely sounds like something is wrong. Your dog is getting up to do what she perceives as her duty to protect the home, but not much else.

I can't guess at the cause, but I do feel strongly that you should schedule an appointment with your vet since your dog has been ill for two days. Better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks for your question, and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

my dog is diabetic at night she pants and has heavy breathing.what could be the problem

  • Hi Ken,

Actually those symptoms are consistent with diabetes. Your dog might be feeling excessively thirsty, so keep a water bowl nearby.

Hope this helps.

Hi. My friend has a sick dog and I am trying to help figure out what is wrong with her. Her symptoms are vomiting, loss of appetite, stiffness and lack of response. I called a vet and ask to give her pedialyte untill she could see a vet. She seemed to get better, move more, respond to voices, but then stopped and started all symptoms over again. Please help, my friend is very poor and cant afford much, but loves this dog.

Hi Tiki,

I'd really like to help, but I'm not a vet. I can only give you tips to help until your friend can take her dog in. If she explains her situation, the vet may be willing to take payments on the bill.

  • The Pedialyte is very good for her. It will help keep her from becoming dehydrated and keep her electrolytes balanced.
  • If she is still vomiting, your friend shouldn't try to feed her. This will only exacerbate that problem. She might be able to get her to drink some chicken broth, but she shouldn't try to get her to eat a full meal.
  • I'm sorry to say that the stiffness and lack of response are not very good signs. Seriously ill dogs begin to lose interest in their surroundings as they decline. Do the dog's legs feel cool to the touch? If so, this is a sign of decreased circulation. As a dog declines, the heart rate slows down.

I'm sorry that this info is all I can offer you. Your friends dog sounds like she is in dire straits, and I'm afraid that she won't survive without veterinary care. I wish I had more positive news for you.

I truly hope this dog makes it. Thank you for your question.

Hi Ken,

I sympathize with you over that vet bill, but I am glad that the treatment really helped your dog. It takes some of the sting out of it.

Thanks for sharing!

Hi Sharon,

This sounds serious. The best advice I can give you is to take him off all food for 24 hours to give his system time to settle down. Just keep fresh water available for him. When you begin feeding again, jut give him a small amount of his dry food, less than half of his normal serving. Wait to see if he keeps this down and listen for those stomach growls.

If he appears to be okay, then you can continue to feed the dry kibble, but not the canned. There's a chance there was something in the wet food that was causing him to be sick.

I also think it's a good idea to check in with your vet and tell him/her about the situation. Remember, the last dog food recall started out with dogs getting sick on canned food. If owners hadn't started reporting the illnesses to their vets, the contamination might never have come to light.

I truly hope your dog's illness isn't serious, and you have my best wishes for his speedy recovery.

Hi Ken,

A dry nose isn't necessarily a problem, but it can be a sign of fever or dehydration. The normal canine temperature ranges from 100-101 degrees F. If you feel confident enough to take your dog's rectal temperature you'll quickly determine if a fever is present.

Excessive thirst is one of the signs of diabetes, so all things cosidered, it would be a good idea to let your vet examine your bitch. As for throwing up water, some dogs will do this to relieve stomach pressure after glutting themselves. My own dogs have done this from time to time, but none of them currently have a medical condition.

Thank you for your questions, and I hope your vet can get to the bottom of the problem.
