Hi Gale,

I can't be certain the flea medication caused the problem, but some dogs do have a bad reaction to spot on products. The best thing you can do is call your vet right away. You may also want to try washing off the flea product using dish detergent to completely strip it away from the skin. I was had a Standard Poodle literally hit the ground within minutes of applying a spot on product, and we washed her immediately. She recovered quickly after the flea product was removed.

Thanks for sharing your situation, and I hope your dog will be alright.

My dog was fine last night and my child put flea control on her backside and then she threw up all night and is now walking around whimpering - she keeps biting at her tail area. I rubbed her back by her rear and she jumped and cried. Could the flea medicine have done this? or maybe anal gland problem?

Hi Wags,

So the vet thinks this was a case of poisoning and gave your dog IV fluids and antibiotics? It sounds like the vet is trying to cover a few bases. Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections, so perhaps your vet suspects that the poison could produce a bacterial infection as a side effect. Did your vet do a blood test to check for the exact toxin? That might help reveal a possible antidote. Right now you can take heart in the fact that the current treatment did result in some improvement in your dog's condition. My advice is to go back over the case with your vet so you completely understand exactly what he did, and how he reached the current diagnosis of poisoning. The vet should also be able to tell you what he thinks the next step should be. I'm not a vet, but I do believe the longer your dog can hang on, the more likely that he'll overcome the poisoning and survive.

Please keep us posted, and I'll keep your dog in my prayers tonight.

Hi Bckrs,

Occasional vomiting is unpleasant, but not usually cause for too much concern. However, if a dog throws up repeatedly over the course of a day or several days, this is cause for true concern and a trip to the vet for examination. Repeated vomiting can lead to dangerous dehydration.

I hope this info helps. :)

Hi Violet,

You'll need your vet's help to figure out what happened, but I think this sounds like some sort of seizure. It's not uncommon for a dog to throw up after having one. We have more information in our articles on Canine Seizures and Canine Epilepsy. I think it would be helpful to try comparing your dog's symptoms with those described in these articles, and then call your vet to discuss the situation.

Thanks for your question, and I hope the info helps.

Hi Wendy,

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog's sudden illness. Is there a possibility your dog ate something toxic while in the garage or house? This could account for the sudden change. I wish I could tell you how to help your dog, but without a proper diagnosis, random advice could hurt more than it helps. Please try to take your dog to the vet if at all possible, and best wishes for her full recovery.

Help My German Sheppard was fine Fri a.m. Friday night when I took her out after getting home from work... she would not eat much - could only get little water down her - walking very careful and slow - holding her head down -- she's warm with a fast heartbeat. I could find no wounds or discharges anywhere. I work long days and leave her either in garage or inside house. I am very worried as I am unable at this time to take her to the vet. Is there anything AI can do to get her thru whatever is ailing her. Thank you

Hi VMunoz,

Some females swell quite a bit during the heat cycle. I once had a Shih Tzu female whose vulva swelled to almost the size of a mini donut during her cycles.

That said, it would still be a good idea to ask your vet to take a look at your dog's vulva to make sure nothing has prolapsed. Usually this sort of thing only happens during a delivery, but it's worth letting your vet check it out in case something serious has happend.

Best wishes for your dog's health.

Hi Angel,

I'm sorry to hear about your dog's sudden illness. In addition to the garbage raiding, there could also be a possibility that he ate something toxic while he was outside. Chemically treated grass, the odd muchroom- these are just some of the things dogs encounter that can cause a toxic reaction.

All things considered, I really think you should get in touch with your vet. If your dog is unable to hold down water, he's in danger of dehydrating. The swollen tummy is also a sign that there is a serious health issue going on, so please don't delay.

Best wishes for your dog's full recovery.

My 3 year old GS was outside running and playing like any other day.Eating and rinking just fine then the evening came. He seemed very umcomfy, couldnt lay still in one spot for more than a few moments, wimpering, swelled tummy, drooling, warm nose but slightly damp and then began vomiting clear fluid w some foamy substance . His breathing has normaled some and the vomiting has decreased but he still refuses to eat anything. He does however drink water but cant hold it down for too long.I know he had gotten into the garbage and ate some of the food that was in there and im wondering if he could by chance have food poisoning or something of that sort? PLEASE HELP

Hi Cheryle,

I'm so sorry to hear about your predicament. Rapid weight loss of this nature is sometimes due to an undetected cancer, but there could be other causes. My best advice is to call your vet anyway and see if he/she would allow you to make payments on a bill so you can at least have your dog examined. Some vets are willing to do this for an established client, so it's worth asking.

Thank you for sharing your situation, and I hope one of our other visitors is able to contribute some helpful info.
