Hi Kerry,
I'm sorry to hear your dog is feeling a bit sluggish during her season. This happens sometimes, but it's usually not serious. Let me explain how a typical heat cycle goes, and then you can decide if your dog needs medical attention.
During the typical heat cycle, the female will bleed heavier the first week, and then lighten up considerably during the second week during the fertile portion of the cycle when she's releasing eggs. Heavier bleeding resumes during the third week and it eventually tapers away to nothing. Hopefully this is all your own female is experiencing. If you suspect there is more going on than this, it would be a good idea to call your vet and discuss what you have observed. Your vet may want to examine your dog for signs of an ovarian cyst if the bleeding is beyond normal levels.
Thanks for your question, and I hope your dog is feeling like her old self very soon. :)

You'll have to consult your vet directly about the cost of the procedures you're enquiring about. As for the swelling of your dog's ears, this wouldn't be the cause of the itching, it would be the result of it. Scratching and constant flapping of the ears can cause small blood vessels to burst and make the ears swell. All things considered, it's time to call the vet and have him/her take a look at what's going on. It's very possible that your dog is having an allergic reaction to a product you only use occasionally in your home.
Thanks for your question, and I do hope the vet can provide your dog with some relief.
-- Contributed by: KellyMy American bulldog has what looks like hives all over his body. Along with this is severe itching to the point that he is bleeding in spots and is very uncomfortable. I noticed that his ears are swollen as well which I suspect is the cause of his itching. He has had these hives and itching before (which we brushed off as allergies) however his symptoms went away fairly quick. This has lasted for at least 4 days now and an oatmeal shampoo bath and benadryl hasn't worked this time. Any suggestions? Also, if he has hymogena of his ears, how much will that typically cost to have them drained? How much will it typically cost to treat his skin allergies if this in fact is the case?
-- Contributed by: LisaI have 3 month old female boxer that hasn't ate anything for about 3 days and also had some kind of vaginal discharge I haven't taken her to vet cause I can't afford it at this time, butI was wondering if you could tell me how serious can this be. I work about 8-10 hours a day and haven't really noticed any other symptoms.

Hi Michelle,
I'm sorry to hear about your situation, and I commiserate about the cost of veterinary care. However, sometimes you just can't get around it.
Not eating anything for three days indicates a fairly serious condition. Is your dog still drinking water? If not, it's critical to get her to take some liquid. If she doesn't take water, you can try tempting her with some chicken broth. This will help stave of dehydration and deliver some nutrients as well.
Dogs also don't have vaginal discharge under normal circumstances. It sounds as though she may have a urinary tract infection, although she's a little young for this. If this is the case, she'll need an antibiotic to help her get over it.
Honestly, I believe your dog really needs to see a vet. If you explain your situation, the vet may be willing to take payments in the form of post dated checks. It's at least worth asking about, and you might be pleasantly surprised.
Thanks for your question, and I hope you are able to get your dog the help she needs.
