Hi Danna, and welcome to the site.

Sometimes the vaccinations themselves can give puppies a small case of the disease they are being vaccinated against. Under the cir...stances, it would be best to give your vet a call just to make sure what's going on isn't any worse than that. Best wishes that all the pups will be alright. :)

Hi Dora,

I can't be certain, but it sounds like your dog may have a case of kennel cough. You can learn about the symptoms and watch a video of a dog with kennel cough at our article Home Treatment for Kennel Cough. Compare your dog's symptoms and see if they seem similar. I'd also recommend calling your vet. Although a case of kennel cough usually resolves itself in about three weeks, it sometimes grows into a secondary respiratory infection that can become life threatening. If your dog is having difficulty breathing, a bacterial infection may have set in while the immune system was busy fighting the kennel cough virus.

Thanks for sharing your situation, and I hope this info helps in some way.

Hi Kimberly,

I'm so sorry to hear that your puppy didn't make it. That's truly heartbreaking. At least now you know exactly what wrong and that you did everything you could under the cir...stances. Please accept my condolences.

Hi Kelly, I just want to let you know that the puppy has passed away. The vet was doing autopsy because they dont know why my puppy doesnt get better after they put him an iv and the vet found out that he has large cancer/tumor growth in his large intestine that why cancer/tumor made immune system down. It really hard hit on us as break our heart because he was so very sweet and loveable but I am glad he doesnt get more suffer as going rainbow bridge.

Hi Kimberly,

I'm not a vet, so keep that in mind as I offer my thoughts. It's sounds as if your dog started out with a case of kennel cough. This is a common virus, and it is not unusual for a dog that has been in a shelter to pick it up. Usually, this virus just has to run it's course. The problem is that while the immune system is fighting off the virus, a secondary respiratory infection sometimes sets in. This is usually bacterial in nature, and I believe the vet at the shelter prescribed the antibiotic because he/she suspected your dog was indeed developing a secondary infection.

You mention that your dog threw up a dark yellow fluid after coughing. This is most likely phlegm being expelled. My question to you is was it a one-time occurrence, or has your dog continued to cough up this fluid? You might expect to see a little phlegm coughed up with a simple case of kennel cough, but if your dog is vomiting/coughing up phlegm repeatedly, it could be a sign that the respiratory infection is worsening.

Sometimes antibiotics work like a charm, other times the medication needs to be switched to a different and more effective antibiotic. If your dog isn't showing any sign of improvement today, or if he actually seems worse, call the shelter vet right away, and tell him/her what's going on. Giving the vet an update on your dog's symtoms will likely result in another appointment. If possible, collect some of the fluid in a zip lock plastic bag and take it with you to the shelter so the vet can see exactly what you're talking about.

Thank your for sharing your situation, and please let us know what happens. Best wishes for your dog's speedy recovery.

Hi, I have been worry about the puppy that he is 5 months old that we got him last Friday from Best Friend Animal Shelter. He was doing good as happy puppy until next day he got start cough and I called shelter on Sunday then they wants me bring the puppy back to shelter to gave him a shot for antibotic and steroid and gave me 2 medicine to take home as antibotic and steroid. Then on Monday, he got high fever and I have to keep him drink water then later afternoon he got break fever and he did walk good on afternoon and did little play with toys at night. Then next day (Tuesday), he haven't doing anything as he lay his dog bed most of the day and he got threw up after he cough. The fluid color look like dark yellow. The shelter say wait until few more days he will get better. What I suppose and should I take to vet or what. I am feel worry about him because we already fell love with him.

Hi Debbie,

It's possible your new pet picked up a virus at the shelter and it is now showing as symptoms. I recommend you scoop a sample of the vomit into a zip lock bag and take it to your vet for analysis. Also be sure to tell the vet about the coughing and sneezing since these might also indicate your dog picked up kennel cough.

All of that said, it's not unusual to experience these kinds of issues with a new adoptee considering all the stress these dogs go through. Let the vet give him a thorough examination and, barring any serious health problems, things should settle down in a few weeks once your dog settles into his new home.

Thanks for your question, and best wishes.

Hi, I got a 3/4yr old male black Lab from the Kennels on Friday. He was a stray dog and picked up from the dog warden and taken to the Kennels. The owner of the Kennel said that he was not sick and had no signs of illness or diseases. Since i got him home he has been a happy lively dog. I have been feeding him with the same food that he was eating at the Kennels so that i didnt give him an upset stomach by changing his food. When i got up on Saturday morning he had been sick (roughly the same as the amount of food that he had ate the day before)and when i got up this morning he had been sick (again, the same amount as the amount of food that he had ate the day before). I havent changed the food that he eats so unsure what is wrong. He does cough sometimes and sneezes abit. Apart from that he seems to be healthy. What do you think could be making him sick? Please help!

-- Contributed by: Debbie

Hi Linda,

This might be some sort of virus, but I couldn't venture to say which one. The important thing is to call your vet and discuss the situation. Puppies should not receive boosters while they are sick, and your vet might want to delay the next booster and use that visit to examine your dog instead. Don't wait until the day of your appointment, call your vet today to find out if he/she can see your puppy earlier.

Thanks for your question, and I hope your pup recovers quickly.

Hello, I have a 4 month old puppy who is very active but as of two days ago I detected some fever and last night she was throwing up. She has to go for her booster shot this week. What do you think it can be? Help please!!

Hi Matthew,

I think it's best if you head straight to the vet. Chihuahuas are more delicate than other breeds, and cough and shortness of breath concerns me. Also, you don't really want to try to force her to drink with a syringe. There's a chance the water can wind up in the lungs rather than down the throat, and that can lead to aspiration pneumonia. Let the vet give her heart and lungs a listen and decide what to do from there.

Best wishes for your little Chi's full recovery.

We have a Chiuahua that is about 3 years old. She was fine yesterday morning. but by afternoon she was very week and di dnot drink or eat anything. I forced her to drink water from a syringe to keep her from dehydrating. She did have a slight cough that was very quiet, like she was having shortness of breath. should we wait awhile or take her to the Vet now?

Hi Sarah,

I don't think it's safe to continue medicating at home. I recommend you schedule an appointment for your dog and have the vet examine her in person. Be sure to remind your vet that he/she said to give the Benedryl and the dosage that was recommended to you. I'm not sure that it's the medicine that's causing a problem, but since your dog now has a second symptom since the bite, it would be good to find out exactly what's going on.

Thanks for your question, and I hope your dog is back to normal soon.

-- Contributed by: Kelly

I have a 9 month golden retriver and she had a little "bite" on her nose well a few hours later her whole nose was covered in huge hives I called the vet and they said to give her 50mg of benadrill now 2 days later she is vomiting and now i am not sure if she eat something bad or it is the effects of the medicine???? but even if i could do something for her vomiting?

Hi C.J.,

I'm not a vet, so take my advice with a grain of salt. There's a possibility that the orange-yellow frothy liquid may be bile. When dogs throw up bile on a regular basis, it can be an indication of a liver problem. There's also a chance that the orange tint is caused by blood, but I can't be certain of this. The very best thing you can do is save a sample of the vomit in a zip-loc bag and take your dog to the vet. Explain exactly how often your dog has been vomiting, and allow your vet to take a blood sample for analysis. The level of liver enzymes should indicate if this is indeed the problem.

Thanks for your question, and I hope the vet is able to help.

Help, we have a 13 yr old siberian husky, who has spent the last few years pretending to blend in to the living room rug, in the last two week has been vomiting an orangy/yellow frothy liquid, he has started refusing his regular food and lost a lot of weight, we have been hand feeing him small amounts of food and he is regularly drinking water and urinating but has not pased any stools for the last 24 hours and seems to be experiencing pain now when being sick, we are very concerned, please advise our local vet isnt very helpul unless it costs the earth.

Hi Linda,

I'm sorry to hear about how sick your dog is. Is it possible that your dog buried some of his ill-gotten gains outside and he's eating more while he's outside? I think it will be alright to wait until your actual appointment to take him to the vet, but don't hesitate to go straight over if you witness any blood in his stool or vomit.

Thanks for your question, and I do hope your dog will be alright.

My dog ate some old food out of the trash. He is vomiting and not eating. He drinks water and then buries his nose in dirt outside. He then comes in and vomits the water. I am taking him to the vet today after work. Why does he stick his nose in dirt? Is he okay, or should I rush him to the vet? Thank you!

Hi Bob,

I'm sorry to hear about what's going on. If possible, try to scoop some of the vomit into a zip lock bag so your vet can have it analyzed. This might be the quickest route to determine if this is a case of poisoning. Let us know what you find out.

Best wishes.

-- Contributed by: Kelly

I have 2 dogs one came down sick yesterday vomiting a lime green foamy mucous. Took him to the vet thinking possibly tick fever as he has had it before. He has been put on antibiotics of which he has taken 2 dosages of 3 tablets each time as prescribed. He ate this evening but is now vomiting again. Our 2nd dog now has these same symptoms. I am thinking possibly poison as our neighbors were broken into last week and we were not. I have one dog scheduled for the vet tomorrow.

Hi Margie,

That yellow liquid sounds like bile. If your dog hasn't returned to normal within 24 hours, it may well be worth it to make the trip to the vet. Throwing up bile on a consistent basis, especially repeated during a single day, could indicate a problem with the liver. This may not turn out to be the case, but if your dog is stiil sick and running a fever, it's worth checking into.

Best wishes.

-- Contributed by: Kelly

Our dog started throwing up small amounts of yellow tinged liquid yesterday afternoon. She is lethargic and seeems to have a fever as she wants to lay on the hardwood floors rather than her bed or carpet. She is eating and drinking, possibly drinking more than usual. Does she need to be taken to the Vet?

-- Contributed by: Margie

Hi Sarah,

Since this has been going on for two days, I recommend that you go ahead and give your vet a call. This sounds like it might be more than a quick case of doggie flu. Be sure to tell you vet about the increase amount of water your dog has been drinking.

Best wishes for a quick recovery.

My dog has been vomiting for the past 2 days,& whe i read about this dog flu it sounds like she may have it,but i'm not sure. She hasn't been eating, she didn't eat her food last nite or this morning,& she's been shaking a little. i'm not sure if this is what she has or what. She has been drinking more water than usual.

Hi Veronica,

It sounds as though your puppy is coming down with something, so you'll want to keep a close eye on him. This might pass in 24 hours, but if it hasn't, or if the symptoms get worse, you'll want to call your vet right away.

Thanks for your question, and I hope your dog is better soon.

My six month old puppy has gotten very lethargic overnight. He has not eat much either and has bright yellow urine. He has also vomit ones this morning. He has been drinking some water but I'm not sure if he has had enough. Please Help!

-- Contributed by: Veronica

Hi Sandra,

Since your dog is vomiting so frequently, it is going to be very difficult to keep him hydrated. I would definitely take him off food for 24 hours, and keep fresh water available. You can even try Pedialyte, but you should change it every couple of hours because it grows bacteria very quickly when it's sitting out. Considering the severity of the vomiting, it would be a good idea to give your vet a call. He/she may prescribe some anti-nausea medication to help your pup's tummy settle, and may even opt to give your pup a subcutaneous injection of saline to help with the hydration. Hopefully this is just a short virus that will be over soon. If it is something serious like parvo, at least your vet will be on top of the problem.

Thanks for your question, and I hope your puppy feels better very soon.

My four month old puppy was quiet today. We did a bit a travellingin the car so I was pleased. Tonight, he didn't eat his dinner, started vomiting and has a high temperature. Every time he drinks water he vomits again. How can I keep him hydrated without him continuing to vomit.. I am sponging him to get the temperature down. Thanks. Sandra

Our four year old mixed breed part lab and terrior has a couple of issues first she over weight and we are working on that but recently we have pulled a small tick off of her it had gotten under her skin leaving a swallon blood lump at the sight now she's developed this hoarse cough almost like she has something stuck in her throat. You should know tht she is still eating and drinking has regular bowel movements and still plays. is there a need for concern or is this just a common cold?

  • Hi Ann,

I'd like you to check out our article on Lyme Disease in Dogs. This article explains more about the disease, and gives a list of symptoms. Your dog's hoarseness may be related to swollen lymph nodes. Since you actually know where the bite spot is, you can show it to your vet. I think it's important to have your dog examined as soon as possible.

Thanks for your question, and I hope you're dog is feeling better soon.

my threw up this morning and refuses to eat or drink, he has been very tired also. What can I do until I can get him to the vet in the morning?

  • Hi Lynn, the most important thing is to get some fluid into him to halt dehydration. If your dog won't take any water or Pedialyte, try offering low sodium chicken broth.

I hope the vet is able to provide some swift relief. Thanks for your question.

We have two male dogs they are 11 months old. one had parvo when he was about 3 or 4 monthe old. He's was vomiting and had diarrhea for a few days. Know hes been ok just inactive and only will eat bread nothing else. Hes up to date on all his shots could he have had the flu or might it be something serious?

  • Hi Amy,

Your dog doesn't seem to be showing too many symptoms, but this could be the beginning stages of an illness. Bread isn't a sufficient diet, so I recommend you give your vet a call and see if he/she wants to examine your dog.

In the meantime, you could try tempting your dog to eat something more nutritious by offering some low sodium chicken soup or some boiled ground beef and brown rice. These foods might spark his appetite and help you get him back on a regular diet.

Thanks for your question, and I hope your dog is feeling like his normal self very soon.

hi just wondering if u can give me some advice on my 11 year old staf, he is shaking like he is cos and keeps yalping. at the mo he is on the settee with the quilt on him he does not look well but got no energy! i think he has the flu? i know dogs can play on attention but he is still eating etc ? what do u think it is???

  • Hi Joanne,

I don't believe dogs play on our sympathy in quite the same way people do. Your dog actually sounds quite sick, and may even have a fever. Is he still drinking water for you? If so, this is good because dehydration complicates things.

The trembling and yelping could also mean that your dog is in pain. This could be due to an injury or some sort of internal disturbance. All things considered, I think it would be a very good idea to take your dog to your vet for an examination. Hopefully this is nothing too serious, but you need to make sure.

Thanks for your question, and I hope everything turns out alright. :)

Hi There,

I recently got this new dog from My Pastor. She is 4 yrs old. Last night she threw up and has not been eating her dog food to much. The only way she eats it is if I mix a little of our gravey in it. I had found a tick on her and got rid of it a few days ago. She seems a little sad or just not herself.

  • Hi Linda,

Since your dog was exposed to a tick, I think it would be a good idea to take her to the vet. Ticks carry diseases, and your dog may need treatment. I don't suppose you still have that tick in a jar or baggie, but if you do, take it to the vet with you.

Thanks for your question, and I hope your new companion is feeling better soon.

My dog, Great Dane, threw up when we were gone for a couple of days. When we got back from vacation our son got the flu. This morning we woke up to diarrhea all over the floor. He's been on Canidea dog food. This is our 3rd bag. Also when he is feeling better his stools are always formed but very very soft. Is he sick?

  • Hi Janelle, vomiting and diarrhea usually indicate some sort of digestive disturbance or virus. My best advice is to take your dog to the vet if this goes on longer than 24 hours. That said, take your dog off food for those 24 hours to allow his system to settle, but do keep fresh water on hand for him.

Best wishes, and I hope this doesn't turn out to be anything serious.

My dog just startd walking like she is drunk and drooling excessivley and acting real tired. What should i do?

  • Hi Amanda,

This sounds like it could a neurological event, such as a mild seizure or stroke. My best advice is to give your vet a call and see how quickly you can get her in.

In the meantime, try to get her to lay down if she is willing. This will keep her from stumbling and possibly injuring herself. Also see if you can get her to take a little water and food. This may help her system to stabilize a bit until you can take her to the vet. Start with the water, and if she doesn't have any trouble swallowing, move on to the food.

Thanks for your question, and please let us know what you find out.

7 months puppy lab sluggish not eating or drinking, should I give him pepto-bismol

  • Hi Bill,

In this instance I'm not sure how Pepto-Bismol would help. It's mainly an antidiarrheal product. I think it would be more beneficial to take your puppy straight to the vet. It could be slipping into dehydration, which is a very dangerous situation with potentially fatal consequences. Your vet may be able to determine what is actually making your puppy sick and provide treatment that will help get things back on track.

Thanks for your question, and I'll keep your puppy in my thoughts.

My dog hasn't really been her self in 2days. She hasn't been eating since then either. She doesn't play like she use to, and she'll dig a whole in the dirt and throw up a thick spit type liquid. It rained for 2 days straight before she stop acting normal an d she got completely soaked. Im taking her to the VET in the morning, but is there anything I can do to get her to eat because she's losing alot of weight?

  • Hi Travis,

I'm sorry to hear your dog is feeling so sick. How has she been drinking? A dog can easily go two days without food and not have it significantly affect her weight, so I suspect the depletion you've noticed is more due to dehydration. I'm very glad you have an appointment with your vet. Until then, rather than try to get her to eat, let's give her tummy a rest. Put dry kibble down and let her have it if she feels well enough to eat it. Otherwise, try to encourage her to drink some water or broth. This should sustain her until your vet can examine her.

Best wishes that your dog is feeling better soon.

Hi, My dog has been coughing when drinking water the last couple of days. She's not her happy self. She didn't eat her food last night and at 3:30 am she vomited up a semi-thick looking foam. I gave her some water and she started coughing a little bit again. I haven't noticed anything else. Is it a 24 hour bug or maybe something more serious. Thanks

  • Hi Steve,

At the least, it sounds like kennel cough, but it could be a deeper respiratory infection. Since your dog is throwing up water, it would be best to let your vet take a look at her before dehydration sets in.

Thanks for your question, and I hope your dog gets well soon.

My dog has been vomiting for two days now, its more of a liquid substance and his stomach makes gurgiling sounds. His ears have become swollen. He's not lethargic and has been eating and acting normally. What could this be? Is it something serious?

  • Hi Julianna,

It's going to take your vet to figure this one out. Has your dog been shaking his head a lot? This could cause the ears to swell and could be caused by a number of conditions, including a bad ear infection. The vomiting might also be tied to this, so it's a good idea to give your vet a call.

Thanks for your question, and I hope your dog recovers soon.

My 2yr old dog started vomiting yesterday. Plays and eats well,,but tonight he looks groggy and confused. Crys to go outside and disappears,,,then comes back in and is restless. When I look into his eyes,,he seems far away and there is a slight shaking,,he acts like he got into something,,like a bad smell he's trying to rub off his nose..but I don't see or smell anything. I have another dog, who's fine,,they eat sleep and play together. I'm taking the sick dog to the Vet in the AM,,just wondering what could be wrong. Just like kids,,they only get real sick in the night!!!

  • Hi Patricia,

Isn't that the truth? Anyway, it sounds like your dog may be having some sort of mild seizure, but I'm sure your vet is going to be able to tell you what's going on. Try to comfort your dog with your presence, and let me know what you find out.

Thanks for your question, and hang in there.

hi i gave my dog a rawhide bone and me being a little forget ful i forgot to take it away from him before he finished it. he then got diarheaa so i gave him a little kaopectate as well as some steamed white rice, feww hours go by and he starts throwing up. question: is it possible that he has a blockage even if he continues to go poo and still has diarheaa what should i do thanks

  • Hi Brandon, sorry to hear about your dog. Yes, he could have a blockage and still go, but only until he empties out beyond the blockage point. A blockage isn't a sure thing here, but to be on the safe side, I'd give your vet a call and tell him/her about what happened.

Hope your dog is feeling better soon. :)

Hi My dog vomited this morning, and it was kind of greenish. Now every few minutes it sounds like he is snorting every few minutes, almost like he is trying to clear his throat (sounds like a duck) not sure how else to describe it. Should I be worried.

Rimppi

  • Hi Rimppi,

It sounds as though your dog may have aspirated some of the vomit into his sinus or airway. Since this could lead to an infection, it might be better to give your vet a call to find out if your dog needs to be seen.

Best wishes.

My dog is much better now and is himself again but was sick on Sunday and no vet was available. He started vomitting white foam and had a runny tummy. I did not know what to do so I gave him some Bi-carbonate of Soda and some gastropec . He stopped vommiting and his stool is nearly back to normal. A day before he got sick I treated him with Frontline. Can that be the reason? HE is much better now and I am not sure if I must still take him to the Vet. Thanks for your help.

  • Hi Chappie,

Some dogs do have a bad reaction to Frontline, however, it usually needs to be washed off to make the symptoms go away. So, I don't really think this is what caused your dog to become sick. There's a chance your dog might have eaten something that upset his tummy, but it sounds like you have things under control now.

Best wishes.

My dog, is almost 2 and today he was okay and energetic his normal self and all of a sudden he wouldnt eat anything... which is very stranger for him and he started throwing up constnatly...

Took our 8yr old poodle to vet to have some teeth extracted. Next day he ate some and took is meds. no stools. Then today (2nd day) stools very good, ate early in day and took antibiotics, but has not eaten or drank since. Has been throwing up... mostly just alittle... not alot of anything. He just starts shaking then hacks and gets alittle up. He is in the house all the time

  • Hi Pat,

I think you should follow up with your vet about this. I don't think it's terribly serious at this point, but your dog might be having a small reaction to the antibiotic. Better to have your vet check it out.

Best wishes.

Hi,my Daschund is starting to cough and then vomits after maybe 4 coughs,i am worried about him, he won't eat or drink. He'll only drink if I hand feed him. I am very worried about him,What should I do?!

  • Hi Michaela,

If it were just the vomiting and coughing, I would tend to think this was a case of kennel cough. However, the fact that your dog is refusing water makes this a more serious situation. I believe the best thing you can do is make an appointment with your vet.

In the meantime, do keep trying to get your dog to take some water or broth to prevent dehydration. Best wishes for a quick recovery.

Hi, I have a 10 mo old miniature schnouser and this morning he woke up fine playful and all. When I let him out in the morning to go to the bathroom it was raining out (no thunder or lightning) and he clammed up. When he came back inside He just laid around and would vomit (maybe 5 times in a 24hr period). he will drink water but not eat. he vomited up a large ball of grass, leaves and whatever else a puppy will eat or chew on. His laziness is what scares me, he also shows signs of a slight shake and ears are layed back. What do you think might be wrong? Do dogs get the rainy day blues or is he sick?

  • Hi Mat, your dog sounds sick to me. Sometimes dogs actually eat grass to make themselve throw up when they are feeling nauseated. The lethargy and shakes might mean that he is running a fever. Five times is a lot to throw up within a 24 hour period, so it may be best to take your dog to the vet right away. If it's not a flu or some other virus, your dog may have eaten something toxic from your yard. A mushroom could cause this sort of reaction.

Thanks for your question, and I hope your dog is well soon.

  • Hi Rick, it's difficult to say what's causing the problem, but thank goodness you have a vet appointment for tomorrow.

For today, have you tried feeding a softer food? If this is a dental infection, the softer food may be easier for your dog to handle. You might even try boiling some ground beef and rice to tempt your dog to eat.

Thanks for your question, and I hope your dog is back to normal very soon.

My four year old female rottie has been vomiting(not super frequently but a lot at one time, gaging(sort of like dry heaving) and eating weird stuff(grass, her rope strings, her blanket and licking the carpet a little since saturday on and off...sometimes shes fine and others she is sick to her stomach. I was wondering what the best thing i should do will be? thanks for your help. Carrie W. Columbus, OH

  • Hi Carrie,

I think it's worth it to give your vet a call and let him/her know this has been going on over the entire weekend. I would also take her off food for 24 hours to give her tummy time to settle, but do keep fresh water out for her.

Thanks for your question, and I hope your vet can help.

my dog is 11mos and the last two days she has been yelling out for no reason and dont play like she normaly dose. Her nose is warm and just lays around

  • Hi Kim,

The yelping most likely means that your dog is feeling pain. Her reluctance to play or move also bears this theory out. I think the best thing you could possibly do is have your vet examine her to find out what is wrong and have it treated right away.

Thanks for your question.

hi my name is travis my dog is about 3 month she as diarrhea thats all i did not change her foot at all

  • Hi Travis,

It could be a simple case of diarrhea brought on by an unknown cause, or it could be the beginning of a more serious illness, so you'll need to watch your dog closely.

I suggest you withhold all food for 24 hours to give her system time to settle. You can then try reintroducing small amounts of dry kibble so you don't overload her stomach all at once and trigger a recurrence of the diarrhea.

If she continues to have diarrhea or if she begins to exhibit other signs of illness, take her to the vet straight away.

Hi, I think my dog may be sick. Her symptoms are a lack of energy, she threw up yellow flem, she's having diarrhea and a bit of a runny nose. She is still eating ok though. What should i do?

  • Hi Charmaine,

I honestly think this is worth a trip to the vet before the symptoms become worse.

Good luck.

my dog is sick, she doesn't have diarrea, i got her to eat a little chicken but won't eat dog food or drink her water voluntarily. she has a runny nose and is sleeping alot. she is keeping he tail tucked when she walks when i do get her up to go potty. she also vomited earlier today. she acted sick yesterday but had energy today she doesn't. should i take her to a vet tomarrow?

  • Hi Cheri,

Yes, I'd say a trip to the vet is definitely warranted. especially so since she is beginning to refuse water. This makes the situation more serious.

Thanks for your question, and I hope your dog is feeling better very soon.

My Dog threw up today after drinking a lot of water this morning and proceeded to continue to be sick most of the morning. He was also acting like something was in his left ear that made he tilt his head to one side like he was trying to shake his head but just couldn't Now both of his eyes are red and the right is swollen.I gave him clear liquids (it is Saturday night and no vets opened) he did eat some food earlier in the day but threw that up. Any suggestions?

  • Hello,

I'm not a vet, so take my suggestion with a grain of salt, but it sounds like your dog may have a very bad ear infection. This would account for the head shaking, and it could make him feel nauseous. the head shaking could also result in the broken blood vessel you see in your dog's eyes, as well as the localized swelling.

You can take your dog off of food for 24 hours to give his tummy time to settle. In the meantime, keep pushing water so your dog doesn't become dehydrated.

Definitely take your dog to the vet as soon as possible. You have my best wishes for his full and speedy recovery.

hi.. my mother in law just got a 6wk old pomeranian yesterday. she had to take it to the emergency vet because it was very limp and not showing much response..it was fine yesterday...i turned out that the puppy had a very low blood pressure and the vet gave her some carotene..well today after the vet visit, she sees really tired and doesnt want to eat , she is drinking though, but she is just laying there...is she ok..help

  • Hi Angie,

No, it doesn't sound like the puppy is alright. I believe you need to go back to the vet clinic for a recheck, and ask specific questions about what they found wrong with your dog, as well as what her prognosis is.

You should also make the breeder aware that there is a health problem once you find out exactly what that problem is.

Best wishes for the puppy's recovery.

I have a 10 month old ...zu and she has been sick for a week. I have taken her to the vet and after an insane amount of money they can't tell me what is wrong with her. She wasn't able to keep any food down and wouldn't drink. She was rehydrated by the Vet and they gave me Cerenia and some antacid to give her. Her vomiting slowed down but one of the drugs gave her diarrhea. (The antacid the Vet thinks) Now she doesn't throw up her food, but a once or twice a day she throws up a yellow liquid. I stopped giving her the antacid which has stopped the diarrhea, but I don't know why she is still throwing up.

  • Hi Amy,

I hear you about the cost of veterinary care, but it sounds as though your bitch needs a follow up visit. Without actually seeing her vomit, what you're describing sounds like bile. This is definitely something to ask your vet about.

Thanks for your question, and I hope your dog makes a complete recovery very soon.

Hi, what are the symtoms or signs of dog flu

  • Hi Vonnie,

You'll find them listed in the paragraph under "What is Dog Flu". I think you'll also find the following articles quite helpful.

Thanks for your question.

I adopted a shepard today from the Humane Society, when I went to pick him up this afternoon they told me he had Influenza. They would call me in a couple of days when he was ready to come home. Is it a good idea to still plan on bringing him home or should I find a healthier dog?

  • Hi Tara,

Any dog can come down with a bout of flu or Kennel Cough, so I wouldn't count this dog out because of it. Just make sure the shelter is willing to give you back your adoption fee if you decide to go somewhere else.

Thanks for your question.

hi.. I have a dog which was dewormed on saturday morning. On sunday afteroon, he was brought of the house for a walk despite of the mild raindrops.. Upon going home, we give him a warm bath. On monday noon, he got a fever. We give him paracetamol. It subsided. His appetite is alright. On tuesday morning, he has a fever of 40 degrees centegrade. We give him paracetamol again it subsided the whole day and did not no longer get high. But tuesday evenig, he no longer eat the normal. What might be the cause?

Hi Annalyn,

First off, I don't think the deworming is the cause of the fever, but it is possible that your dog was exposed to the flu.

Paracetamol is useful for treating fevers in dogs, but it should only be used under a vet's supervision. Too high a dose can actually be toxic, and might lead to irreversible liver damage.

All things considered, I think it would be a good idea to give your vet a call and tell him/her what has been going on since the worming. Be sure to include how much paracetamol you've been giving, and how often you have dosed your dog. This will help your vet determine whether your dog needs to be seen.

Thank you for your question, and I do hope that everything turns out alright.

Hi Sunny,

It does indeed sound like dog flu. Have you been able to get her to take any liquid? This is very important, especially if she has a fever. If you have a rectal thermometer you can take her temperature. Anything over 102 degrees F is considered a fever in canines.

If she does have a fever and isn't showing signs of improving, I'd go ahead and call your vet. Senior pets have a harder time bouncing back from an illness, and you may need a little help getting her through this.

Best wishes for her speedy return to health.

My dog is almost 12 years old and she has hyperthyroid but has been controlled and with no issues. This weekend she started shivering, is lathargic, won't eat (although we did get her to eat once yesterday), and she won't get out of bed on her own. We asked her if she wanted to go for a walk and her ears perked up and looked like she did, but her body wasn't showing us the same enthusiasm. She has had a couple of series of coughs. I though kennel cough but she hasn't been with other dogs and shes not coughing anything up. And it isn't consistent. It seems like the flu that humans would have. The symptoms seem similar but looking for an opinion.

Hi Joni,

Your vet is the expert here, so I think you should take the second dog in for an exam. This could now be a case of contagious illness, or both of your dogs may have gotten into a substance that is causing the reactions.

If you suspect the mushrooms may have something to do with your dogs' illness, it would be a good idea to take a few in to the vet for analysis.

Thanks for your question, and I hope your dogs recover soon.

i have 2 adult labs. one has an easily upset diegestive system, the other has an iron gut. the first came down with various symptoms, red around eyes, vomiting, red patches on skin, runny nose, panting. the other showed no signs. took first to vet , he said allergi reaction, gave him allergy shot and pergesteron. seemed a little better. then second dog has come down with similar symptoms (she is chocolate so hard to tell with the eyes and skin) but runny nose and nuaseated, lacks energy. they both want to eat grass and then vomit. you mentioned something about mushrooms in your reply to Gerald , we live on 2 acres and there are "mushrooms" growing in the yard. can you tell me more or just give me your opinion. thanks

Hi Sharon,

I'm so sorry to hear your dog is sick. Since your vet is monitoring things from the medical perspective, I'll address the food issue.

We need to get your dog eating and drinking normally again so his system will regain its balance. The best way to tempt your dog to eat is by cooking for him. Try boiling some chicken, carrots and brown rice together. Leave the water in it for broth, let it cool down to lukewarm and offer it to your dog. Hopefully he will find it enticing enough to eat. If he does, continue cooking for him until he seems to be returning to normal. You can then begin adding some of his regular dog food to the mix to gradually change him back over to his regular diet, or you may decide to continue cooking for him.

I truly hope this suggestion helps. Best wishes for your dog's quick recovery.

Hi Gerald,

It does sound as though your dog is quite ill. I recommend taking him to your vet straight away if you haven't already done so. If it was excessively hot outside and your dog ran out of shade and water, there's a good chance he's suffering from heat exhaustion, just as you suspect. There's also a chance he ate something he found in the yard that's poisoning him. I once lost a Shih Tzu to a random mushroom.

My best wishes for your dog's recovery. Good luck.

right now it's 6:15 pm and my dog just came inside. he can't walk on his own, he's breathing REALLY hard and has vommited. any ideas? he's also slobbering excessivly. i haven't totally ruled out heat exhaustion, but feel it may not be the cause.

Hi Nolana,

You should probably have him checked out by your vet. In the meantime you should refrain from feeding him for 12 hours to give his system time to settle. You can offer him Pedialyte in place of his water, but change it often because it will grow bacteria quicker than H2O.

I hope he recovers soon.

Our Dashchund lost appetite on Saturday and began vomiting and having Diarhhrea Sunday. At ties he is playful, other listless. I suspect he has picked up the flu. Are there any options for keeping him hydrated. Sidebar, the vomiting has ceased, just the diarhea persists.
