Hi Connie,
It varies a bit depending on how much raising the litter depleated mom's resources, but most females come back into heat within four to six months of the delivery if they cycled every six months prior to breeding.
Thanks for your question. :)

-- Contributed by: connieHi Jodee,
A male dog can become fertile as early as four months old, but in most cases not until six months old. As a rule, it wouldn't be a good idea to use such a young dog for stud, but since it's possible he could sire a litter, it's best to keep a female in heat away.
Thanks for your question. :)

-- Contributed by: jodyHi Dog Infertility,
Are you referring to having your dog neutered? As long as the procedure is carried out by a competent veterinarian, there is really nothing to worry about. Check out our article about Dog Neutering and Spaying to learn more about the procedure. I hope it will set your mind at ease.
Thanks for sharing your situation. :)
-- Contributed by: Kellyi just wanted to know if making my male dog infertile wil affect his health.our vet told us to go for it,but i am not sure..please help!
-- Contributed by: dog infertilityHi Jimmy,
Vets tell us a male pup becomes fertile somewhere between four and six months old. That said, few puppies are coordinated enough to complete a successful breeding until they are six to eight months old. Ideally, no male should be bred before he has reached physical maturity.
Thanks for your question. :)

-- Contributed by: jimmy himmerHi Melissa, good question.
There really isn't a set age that male becomes infertile. It basically depends on the individual dog's health. Some males remain fertile in varying degrees their entire lives. The only sure way to know if a male is fertile is to have the vet do a sperm count.
Thanks for your question. :)

-- Contributed by: MelissaHi Robin,
Good question. Yes, the amount of eggs that get fertilized can vary quite a bit because of all the factors involved. First, it depends on how many eggs the female actually releases during her heat cycle. Some breeds tend to release more than others, and there can even be a difference between family lines of the same breed. Second, it depends on the timing of the breedings. Breedings that take place near the beginning of the fertile phase of the cycle are likely to catch more eggs because the sperm can live for several days after delivery. Breedings that take place late in the fertile phase may have already missed some of the eggs released earlier.
As you can see, timing is important when it comes to litter size, but it ultimately depends on how many eggs the female releases. Thanks for your question. :)

-- Contributed by: RobinMy Boston Terrier stud is 8 mos. old. His testicles are quite large. Is he old enough to breed my female?
- Hi Freckles,
Your dog is probably capable of siring a litter at eight months old, but I wouldn't recommend it. I tend to wait until a dog is at least one year old before breaking him in. This gives him time to finish maturing. My best advice would be to wait until your bitch's next heat cycle to carry out the breeding.
Thanks for your question. :)

- Hi Chrissy,
I think you'll find the following articles very helpful.
Thanks for your question, and don't hesitate to come back if you still have questions :)

Hi Judy,
I tried to research this issue for you, but I couldn't find any conclusive info. My hunch is that your dog won't recover fertility, but your vet should be able to answer this question for you. If all else fails, have your dog's sperm checked again one year after treatment. This should give you a solid answer.
Thanks for your question, and sorry I don't have an outright answer for you.
