Hi Joe,

Here is the link that shows which breeds can be identified. As far as I can see, there is no listing to identify wolf heritage specifically, but since modern dogs share a common ancestor, there may be genetic markers for wolves that are present but the lab simply doesn't make mention of. Your best option is to email the website directly. You should be able to locate that option from the link I just provided.

Thanks for your question, and please let us know what you find out. :)

hi, i was wondering if my dog was wolf mixed could you tell by the test? also if you can't is there any test that can?

Hi Kimberly,

I would check with the American Kennel Club first. They may accept Metamophix's results if they prove your Beagle is purebred and allow you to register her on a limited basis. You can reach them at AKC.org to ask before you test.

Good luck!

I have a female beagle that is unregistered, and a male beagle that is papered and would like to bread the two. If I did this test do you know of any registries that would allow me to paper the female based on your test?

Hi Jen,

It would be best to test both dogs to be certain of their backgrounds. It's possible for more than one male to impregnate a female since she sends down multiple eggs.

If you do decide to test, let us know how useful it was to you. Thanks for your question.

Hello, My parents adopted a brother and sister from a rescue organization. We know what mom is, but have no idea what dad is. We thought as they grew up it would become more prevalent what breed the father was, but the two dogs look completely different! Would we need to test both dogs? Thank you! Jen

Hi Kelly. I have an answer for your reader's questions about the product upgrade. I manage the official online store for Metamorphix - (dog-dna DOT com) and we begin taking orders Monday, May 12th for the NEW Canine Heritage XL Breed Test, which will detect over 100 breeds (eventually 117 or 119). Many mixed breed owners (like me) have been waiting a long time and are thrilled that we can finally run this new test. If you could update your links to our site, it would be appreciated. We also offer an official affiliates program, which can earn you 10% on all the orders coming from your site. Email me if you are interested.

Regards,

Hi Phil,

You'll find my reply to Cindy directly beneath your own question. My advice was to contact the company directly for an update. I've checked their website recently myself, and they now offer a sign up to receive email notification when the breed list is increased. If you'd like to sign up yourself, here is the link at Metamorphix.

Thanks for your question. :)

Hi,

Didn't see an answer to Cindy's question on when the upgrade to 116 breeds would occur. Will it be available soon and at what cost?

Phil

Hi Cindy,

You'll need to contact Metamorphix directly through the link offered at the end of this interview. From what I can see on the website, the larger test isn't available yet, but if you go to the website you can contact them directly through the link they provide. Metamorphix should be able to give you an idea of how close they are to releasing the extended breed test.

Thanks for your question. :)

An article I read for your company stated that you would have 116+ breeds by the fall of 2007 for DNA testing. Has it been upgraded yet from the original 38 as of 4/5/08? We adopted a puppy in January and they gave us a guesstimate of what breed/mix he is, but other people keep telling us that he looks like an Australian Sheppard, so we are anxious to find out. Thank you.

I bought a puppie 3 months ago from a pet store since then I have had 2 vets tell me they do not feel the puppie is the mixed breed I thought I was buying yorkie/maltese will this test help me determine if in fact what mixed breed the puppie is? The pet store tells me the only way I can determine this is by a blood test?

  • Hi Penny,

Yes, the test could determine your dog's mix, but only if your dog's heritage is one of the breeds the test is designed to detect. Follow the link to the Metamorphix website listed at the end of this article to see exactly which breeds are covered by the DNA test. Then you can order a test if you feel it will likely be worth it.

Thanks for your question, and I hope you're able to find out which breeds are in your dog's background.

I have a small female dog. She is mixed with full breed ...er Spaniel and full breed Miniture Chow. She just had 5 puppes by unknown male. I would like to determine the puppies mix breed. Would the DNA testing determine the breed of the male.

  • Hi Simon,

The test would be useful if the stud turned out to be one of the 38 breeds the test can reveal so far. Bear in mind that if you don't know who the stud is, there could also more than one stud involved. Litters can have multiple sires if more than one dog bred your bitch. It just depends on whose sperm reached each individual egg. In this scenario, you'd need to have each puppy tested to try to figure out it's heritage. As you can surmise, this could become an expensive undertaking, and you might not be able to get conclusive results.

Thanks for your question. :)

Is there an update on the exact release date for the upgraded test of 100+ breeds?

  • Hi Michael,

I haven't heard of anything, but you can contact Metaporphix directly through the link to their website listed at the end of the article.

Thanks for your question.

Has the testing increased it's amount of breeds? We have 2 Border Collie mixes, each dog are seperate mixes, and would like to find out what each dog are mixed with. There maybe more than 2 breeds in the each dog. Would this help us out?

Hi Jennifer,

I don't know if the breed list has been added to yet, but you can contact Metamorphix directly at the link provided above in order to find out.

Thanks for your question.

Hi Nadine,

I share your frustration that the test doesn't identify more breeds than it is currently capapble of doing, but I think it's beneficial in its current capapbilties for people working with the breeds listed.

Genetics is still very much a "pioneer" science, but I'm sure that the manufacturers are working on identifying more breed markers. After all, it's in their best financial interest to do so. Hopefully it won't take too long.

Thanks for your input.

I think this is great, but I think they should have waited to put more breeds and option before releasing it.There is not enough breeds. Also some mixed breed dogs are mixed with more than two breeds sometimes 3 breeds and the list is so small you could possibly miss a breed. There is no breeds like cairn terriers or hearding breeds and many more on the list.

Hi Latisha,

I'm not so sure the current DNA test would be useful to you. In the heading "What kind of information does a DNA test provide?", you'll find a link to the 38 breeds the test can identify markers for. Unless you think your dogs look significantly like one of the breeds listed, there's probably no point in having the test done. You may want to wait to see which breeds are added in the future.

Thanks for your question.

Hi Chrissie,

You're correct, the Boxer is a recognized AKC Breed. However, the Pitbull is not. American Staffordshire Terriers have been used quite a bit in breeding to create Pitbulls, but people breeding for fighting dogs mix in other strong breeds to get the "Pitbull type" of dog.

At this time, the Metamorphix test does not recognize the genetic markers for American Staffordshires, so the current test may not be that useful to you. I'd book mark the link in this article, and keep checking back with Metamorphix to find out when they update the test.

Thanks for your question.

I have 2 dogs and they both were given to me and i was told they were Pit Bulls however with all that is said about Pit Bulls, I wanted to find out if my dogs could possibly be something else. Would the DNA test be effficent for me to use for my dogs

-- Contributed by: Latisha

I adopted my dog from a rescue shelter and she was labeled a terrier mix. She looks like she has some pitbull in her or maybe boxer. Are these recognized breeds of the AKC. I'm pretty sure a boxer is but I don't know where a pitbull originated from. Should I wait for the more advanced test?

-- Contributed by: Chrissie

Hi Dave,

That's an interesting question. As far as I understand it, the test is only geared to reveal certain AKC recognized breeds. The Dingo is not one of them, but it wouldn't hurt to contact one of the companies directly through the links provided above and ask. Good luck with your search.

I'm interested in a DNA test for my dog due to the fact that he looks and acts like a dingo. Would dingo show up in the results?

Hi Natalee,

The DNA test from MetaMorphics described in this article could reveal the genetic make up of your male dog if he is from any of the breeds the test is currently able to identify. You can order a test from the company link provided above if you want to take a chance.

As for your two Blue Tick Hounds, it really depends on which registry you want to use. I advise you to do a search on canine registries to find one that recognizes the breed, then see what they require as evidence of purity. Some clubs are far more strict than others. Good luck with your search.

-- Contributed by: Kelly

I have two Blue Tick Hounds. They are pure, but came with no papers, so how do I go about proving that they're pure so that I can register them? Also I have a male and I would like to know what is in him. I live in Florida, so do you have any info for me ?

Thank You for your time.

That's a very interesting question, and one you will probably need to email MetaMorphix to find out for sure. I'm guessing that the extremely high temps used during the cremation process destroy the useable DNA. The only way they might be able to gather any DNA at all would be from pulp enclosed in a tooth, but again, the cremation might have rendered it unuseable.

My dog has died, but I have her ashes. Is there any way to test her ashes to see what breeds she was made up of?
