Hi Dogs4life,

If you like Bichons, you may want to investigate Toy or Miniature Poodles. They are a bit easier to train than Bichons in most cir...stances. :)

Hi Kristen,

You really need to consider your father's health first in this situation. Whether or not he could tolerate a dog in your home depends on just how bad his allergies are. Some people with mild allergies can tolerate dogs when they are on medication. People with stronger allergies cannot handle the dander even with medication.

And dander is actually the problem here, not the actual dog hair. There is a protein found in dog saliva that causes the allergic reaction. Every time the dog licks himself, the saliva is distributed along the fur. When it dries, it flakes off and becomes airborne. This is how it ends up in the eyes and respiratory tracts of people. If you happen to be allergic, this can be quite miserable.

If your dad is willing to visit his doctor, the doctor may be able to assess just how strong your dad's allergy is. It is up to your father whether he wants to experiment with antihistamines prior to getting a dog.

No matter what happens, remember that you can always get a dog later when you are living in your own home. You may just have to wait a few years before that can happen.

Thanks for your question, and I do hope that your dream of having your own dog comes true one day. Best wishes.

Okay, my father is allergic to dogs, and I keep pressuring him to let me have one. I'm looking for a small dog, and one that doesnt shed. I was thinking of a Bichon Frise or a Maltese. But is there a way I could actually get a dog?
