Hi LeLoni,

It sounds like it may be necessary to confine your dog to smaller territory when you can't be home with her. Would it be possible to set up a small exercise pen in front of the doggie door that allows your dog access to it? This way, she can't roam your home at will, and she'll be encouraged to go outside to potty instead of soiling her small area. I'd also recommend moving one of her stool accidents outside to the area you want her to use so she gets the idea that this is the proper place to go. Hopefully this combination of suggestions will get your dog on the right track.

Thanks for your question.

We have a two year old miniture dachshund that we just can not get potty trained. We even got her a doggy door and she has no problems going in and out of it she just refuses to go potty outside when we are not home. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi Georgia,

I'm glad I could help. The average heat cycle lasts about 21 days. I think you'll find the following articles very helpful.

Thanks for your question, and please feel free to browse the site. We have a lot of articles about breeding and dog pregnancy as well as other relevant pet care info. :)

Thanks for your kind information.... How long does a female stay in heat each cycle?

-- Contributed by: Georgia

Hi Georgia,

Most males are capable of breeding by the time they are six months old, so there's a possibility your male could complete his mission. Hopefully you caught the pair in time because it's too soon for your female to go through a pregnancy.

Of course, this means you're going to have to be very careful over the next couple of heat cycles to prevent a litter before your female is mature. You may want to take turns keeping one of the dogs confined so neither one becomes too stressed.

Thanks for your question, and best of luck!

I have two mini dachshund male and female both 8mo. old. Female started heat one week ago.. I wasn't concerned "at first" about the male because he was showing no interest, but I caught him trying to ride her. I really want her to be at least 2yrs old before they breed, have I dropped the ball in thinking he was too young? Since I saw him trying to ride her I have kept them apart. Thanks

Hi Melissa,

It's possible that your female is pregnant. Your vet can perform a blood test for pregnancy about three weeks after the heat cycle has ended, and then you'll know for sure one way or the other.

Good luck!

My female just got out of heat this past week, not sure if she mated with our male(hopefully). She has been throwing up every morning, should I be worried. Could she be pregnant

I got my mini dachshund when she was already six months old, not potty trained at all. She just turned 1 in January and we are still having problems with her. She's very sneaky, does it at night when we are sleeping or when we aren't home. Sometimes just when we are in the other room or right after she has been outside for a while. We have tried so many different things. Do you have any suggestions on what else we can try for her??

  • Hi Lacey,

I would begin training from scratch, and lessen her territory by using a crate. Keep her in the crate overnight and when you can't be there to keep an eye on her. Choose a one word command to use when you take her outside and praise her lavishly when she goes where she's supposed to. If she doesn't go outside, withhold praise and go inside quietly. If you catch her having an accident, give her a firm no command. You can move her stools outside to the location you want her to use, and this will hopefully entice her to use the area. You'll also need to soak the areas she's soiled indoors with an enzymatic cleaner to eliminate any trace odors that would draw her back to the scene of the crime.

You will have to be extremely consistant to make this work, but I think you can do it. Best of luck!

Hi Alesha,

It sounds like you need to take control of the situation and become the leader of the pack. I recommend enrolling your dogs in an obedience class to establish manners. As for the potty training issues, I think you will find our article on Dog Training Books very helpful. There are a few books specifically about house breaking that will help you get those ornery little Doxies on track.

This is all going to be a good deal of work, but I think you can do it. Thanks for your question.

Hi Aaron,

I'm going to recommend you check out some of the articles in our Category:Dog Training. I think you'll find these useful to help you get started:

If your dog is at least six months old, you could also ask your dad to enroll you both in an obedience course. This will help you teach your dog to be a good family companion.

I hope you find these suggestions helpful, and don't hesitate to come back with specific questions when they come up along the way. Good luck!

My doxie has aggressive problems. He thinks he is a king or the Alpha in the pack. He is not. He just dosn't know it. We looked through every web page we could to find good ways to stop his aggression towards us. So can you give us some ideas for disipline on our pet?
