Hi Vacaville,

The very best thing you can do is consult your vet about the entire situation. Aborting a litter has the potential to affect future fertility, so it's best to draw on your vet's expertise before you make a decision. Keep in mind, there's no guarantee that your puppy is pregnant, even if the dogs did tie. There's only a possibility, and it will take a couple of weeks before your vet can do a blood test to check for pregnancy hormones.

Thanks for sharing your situation, and I hope it all works out for you.

My puppy has been in heat, and she is at the end. A male dog jumped my fence, and they got stuck. I know this means she is going to have a litter. We wanted to breed her but not now and not with a mutt. I was told to give her "Plan B". Should I?

Hi Monika,

You'll need to keep these dogs separated for the entire season to avoid having a litter. If possible, you might want to have your male puppy stay at a friend or relative's house for a few weeks to keep things calmer at home. Some males become quite anxious and difficult to control when they can smell a female in heat.

Thanks for your question, and I hope things go smoothly for you. :)

Hi Savannah,

You would need to check directly with a vet about the cost, but understand that canine oral contraceptives aren't meant to be used continually and they can have unwanted side effects. Another aspect is that you have to pay for them everytime you use them, so it's an ongoing cost that could wind up being more than the cost of spaying.

I'd like you to read our article about Low Cost Spaying and Neutering Programs. If you're able to locate one near where you live, it could reduce the cost of spaying considerably. We have a program in my town that lowers the cost to about $45.00 for a small pet. Check with your local Humane Society to see if they can recommend a program to you.

Best wishes.

Hi Sky and Shelby,

Since your questions are similar I'll answer them together.

There are several contraceptive injections for females, but they are not widely used and all of them may not yet be approved for use in the USA.

Injections for females include:

  • Medroxyprogesterone acetate: Also sold under the names Promone E and Depo-Provera
  • Mixed testosterone esters: Commonly sold as Durateston
  • Proligestone: Available under the commercial name of Delvosteron

You will need to consult a vet about the price and availability of any of these contraceptives, as well as any side-effects associated with their use. Some products can cause uterine problems, so it's best to understand the possibilities before having a dog injected.

Thank you both for your questions.

During the early sixties, I used an injectable form of birth control for my small, mixed dog. One shot lasted a long time, and was not expensive. She lived to be eleven years and had no side effects that I recall. I heard that it was taken off the market because it was unpredictable. Some dogs never came in heat again after taking the shot. Anyway, I'm an animal activist and wondered if that could be a possibility for poor families with older dogs that have litter after litter, year after year, most of the pups ending up on Death Row at the shelter. Please, I'm looking for solutions...

I have a ... that is one year old and want to go on vacation without worrying about the sitter having to deal with her coming into heat. I have heard of an injection birth control that will put off the heat for one cycle. Has anyone heard of this injection and is it safe?

Hi Traci,

The best thing you can do is call your vet to ask whether this drug might have any harmful effects on your dog. That way you'll know whether your pet needs medical attention right away.

Best wishes that all turns out well.

Hi Herbert,

Having your female altered is a smart thing to do in order to prevent an unwanted litter, especially if you're bringing an unneutered male to live with you. A tubal ligation is one form of sterilization where the tubes from the ovaries are surgically clamped shut. The main drawback to this procedure is that the clamps have been known to fail in some cases. It may be a surer option to go with a full spaying, where the reproductive organs are removed. Still, choose the option you think is best.

Thanks for your question, and good luck with the new Doxie.

I am considering Tubaligation for my female 2 year old Dachshund. I may be getting a 2 year old male Dachshund becasue of family problems. These are two dogs I really just love and was thinking that it would be a more natural way of life for the two dogs to live togeter. Is this choice something that would make happier dogs. Yes, my wife and I are die hard dog lovers.

Hi Bev,

The price would vary from vet to vet, so I'd suggest calling your veterinary clinic directly to see what they currently charge.

Thanks for your question. :)

if my dog got hucked up with my male can i give her human birth control will it kill the puppy

  • Hi Justin, a human birth control pill will not be effective in aborting a litter. If you truly believe your bitch is pregnant, it would be best to discuss your options with your vet.

Best wishes for a happy outcome.

  • No Sue, this won't be effective and it could also prove dangerous. Please don't do it.

Where are doggie birth control pills available?

  • Hi Carol,

You should be able to get them through your vet. :)

My friend lives in the country and feeds 2 female dogs that of course produce pups because she has no way to contain them to take them to be spayed. 1 especially does not alow anyone to touch her so it would be dangerous for the vet too. Birth control sounds like a great idea but what and how to administer other than in food is the question. Any ideas?

Hi Marian,

I don't recommend trying to feed any birth control medication to these dogs. The product produces unwanted side effects that would be impossible to treat given these dogs' feral natures. Your friend also won't be able to ensure that each dog only eats one pill, since they may share bowls.

What I recommend is hiring an animal control trapper to humanely capture the dogs so they can be spayed. The vet will be able to tranquilize them as needed to get through the procedure.

Thanks for your question, and I hope you find these suggestions helpful.

Hello, I have 2 Jack Russells, 1 male and one female, about 14 days ago I realized the female was having the first menstruation. Therefore, I took my male to my Girlfriend house. I was planning to breed my dogs but later on. like wait at least two years. I didn't know too much about for ho many days the female stills in heat.. so after 14 dias I took my female back to my house and I wnet for 2 minutes, no more to my room and I realized the male and the female were together and attach to each other. I'm really worry about this, this just happend about two hours ago. I'm sorry for my ignorancy but do there is something for dogs like a plan b pill like for humans or something? please let me know what I can do. Thanks a lot

Hi Daniel,

Yes, there is medication called DES that can be used to induce canine abortions, but it has side effects such as dropping red and white blood cell count, so it can be dangerous to use.

I think it would be best to discuss the situation with your vet and see what he or she recommends.

In the meantime, don't beat yourself up over not knowing. Everybody learns the ins and outs of breeding in their own way, and you are not the first person to have an accidental breeding. I think you should check out our articles on Dog Heat Cycle and Breeding, Signs Of Dog Pregnancy and Dog Pregnancy. I think you'll find the info helpful.

Thanks for your question, and I hope everything works out alright.

Hi Dawn,

Wow! That was one determined stud!

If your dog ate his way through a door, I'm not sure I could suggest anything else you could do in your home to guarantee the dogs stay apart. Is there a possibility that your male could stay with a friend or family member for a couple of weeks until your bitch's season is over? This would solve your problem, and it would also relieve your male's stress since he'll settle down once he can't catch her scent anymore.

There are sprays that are supposed to mask the scent of a bitch in season, but I don't believe they are a complete deterrent. I think boarding your male away from home is a good short term solution if you can manage it.

Thanks for your question, and I hope you find this suggestion helpful.

My vet is a fix fix fix kind of guy but I want one more litter from my dogs BUT I am trying to wait one cycle (which just started again). The problem is my male ate through a door to get my bitch last time. ANY suggestions to help get through this cycle?

-- Contributed by: Dawn

Hi Carl,

I guess that dog was just determined he was going to breed her. He managed to catch her scent through the spray.

Personally, I wouldn't rely on any spray to prevent a breeding. It's just too risky. I'm not a fan of dog birth control medications either. I prefer to keep a bitch in season separated from any males for the duration of her cycle. Better yet, if you're sure you're not going to breed a bitch it's easier to have her spayed and never have to worry about it again.

Thanks for your question.

i have also come across a spray called ONO - which is sprayed on the bitch's private parts. this has kept the male dogs away. the first 4 times my dog was heat it worked fine. but the 5th time, one male dog kept mounting her. what went wrong.
