Hi Kate,
You're well on the way to diagnosing this problem yourself. Your new pet is having difficulty adjusting to a slightly chaotic routine. In order to successfully complete house training, you need to maintain a regular schedule in your home so you dog has a consistent routine to learn. He also needs to spend more time getting used to his new family. I think that if you can achieve this, the random pooping will become a thing of the past.
As for the new food, remember to make changes very slowly. Only mix about one part of the new kibble to three parts of your dog's usual brand. Serve this for a week, and if all goes well, up the ratio to 50/50 and proceed to gradually add more new food while reducing the quantity of the old kibble. The dumpster diving probably also had an adverse affect on your dog's digestive tract, so the upset might not have been entirely due to the Avoderm.
Thanks for your question, and good luck with your new pet.
-- Contributed by: KellyHello! We just adopted a 1 year old, submissive dachshund mix (or terrier...we don't care, he's wonderful!) He's been with us for almost two weeks now and has had a hectic time since my sister is visiting and I've been taking him with me to several places. He's pooped in the house in three different rooms over the course of the time he's been here. We've taken him out a lot to make sure he goes outside, we've taken him on several long and short walks etc. When I came home after being gone all day (he was with my husband) I found poop in our bedroom. My husband was working with him yesterday to try and alleviate his separation anxiety. I'm wondering if that stressed him out a little.
Also, he's not been a big eater. Is that because he's making the adjustment to our house? And I tried introducing AvoDerm to his diet but he threw up the two days I tried it so I stopped. He's gotten into the garbage a couple of times (we've taken steps to make sure he doesn't again). I suspect that may have upset his stomach.
When my sister leaves, we'll be on more of a routine which is good.
So, any thoughts on what we can do to make his life and stomach more comfortable? And, what's up with the poop?!
thanks
Kate
-- Contributed by: KateHi Laurie,
Could there have been something that discouraged your dog from going out into the yard when the deck pooping began? I think it would help if you went outside with him and made sure he went down to the lawn to do his business. The retraining from you should remind your dog where he is really supposed to go.
You'll also want to soak the areas he has soiled with an enzymatic cleaner to remove all traces of the smell. Otherwise your dog will be drawn back to these areas to soil again.
Thanks for your question, and I hope these suggestions help.
-- Contributed by: KellyHi - I have a 7 year old min pin male which is completely housetrained, but in the last couple days has began to poo on our deck, just a few steps down is the grass, and now even on the rug, when we have a doggy door that he regularly goes out by to do his business. Why is he doing this all of a sudden? It is really getting us down. Laurie
-- Contributed by: LaurieHi John,
Check out my advice to Kerri in the post just below. I think it will be helpful for you too.
Good luck.
-- Contributed by: KellyHi Kerri,
Does your dog poop inside the house? It sounds like she confused about where she should do that. If she has more accidents inside, take the stools outside to a single spot to create a "potty stop" for her. This should help her get the idea that pooping is supposed to be done outside as well. You can clean up the pile outdoors, but you might want to leave one small sample until she is going outside on a regular basis.
Best wishes.

-- Contributed by: John MalloryI need help. Our 7 month old beagle seems impossible to potty train. I work during the day, so I take her outside in the morning and she will pee but not poo. Then she won't eat her breakfast, leaving me with the dielema, do I put her in her crate for 8 hours without food and knowing she will poop during the day. We give her praise and treats for going outside in the same spot, but she won't go on schedule, which really makes things confusing if we have to leave her outside the crate with newspaper. I'm getting so tired of this cycle.
