Hi Kelsey,
Although inbreedings should be avoided as a rule, accidents do happen. Having your male neutered will prevent a repeat from happening down the road.
I can't be certain your female is pregnant, but it sounds like she could be. You can compare her development to the signs listed in our article on Dog Pregnancy Symptoms to try to determine if that's the case.
As for any pups that might result from this breeding, there is a chance for abnormalities, but if there haven't been any inbreedings in previous generations, they might turn out alright. The best thing you can do is take the litter to the vet for thorough examination before you try to place them in new homes.
Thanks for sharing your situation, and let us know how things turn out. Good luck.
-- Contributed by: KellyMy 5 year old female pomeranian had a litter of puppies over a year ago, we kept the male puppy and my mother is looking after them as I live in a non-pet house and unable to keep them. My mom came home one day to find them "stuck" as my female pom was in heat this was about 3 weeks ago. I am now worried my female pom is pregnant, and scared if the puppies will have abnormal features, if any. This is the only time its happened, and we are getting the male spayed asap to prevent from happening again. The only thing I noticed happening with my female pom is enlarged nimples, drinking fair amounts of water, and sleeping a lot (no weight gain, and she is a usually sleepy, lazy dog for atleast a year and a half ago) can someone please help me out with any kind of info. Thank you!!!

There's no way to predict what the health of these puppies will be, but if this is the only time an inbreeding has occured in your dog's family, chance are that everyone will be fine. Right now, the biggest hurdle is going to be the delivery. We have a great article on this topic that I think you'll find very helpful. Check out Delivering Puppies. The article lists what you should have on hand, what to do, and how to tell if your dog may need a C-section. Be sure to bookmark it in case you need it in a hurry, and don't hesitate to come back if you have more questions. We also have a Breeders Corner on our Dogs Forum where you may get more responses. Feel free to visit us there.
Best wishes that all goes well. Keep in touch.
-- Contributed by: KellyI've had accidental inbreeding between a father and one of his first puppies. I'm very very certain she's pregnant, I can feel their little tiny heads, if she lays right. I'm fairly worried.
I read before you'd like to know the breed, The father is a Yorkie, Malteese, Chihuahua mix, and the female is a Yorkie, Malteese, Chihuahua, Miniture Dachshund mix. She's pretty little, I'm just a little worried, what can happen and how can I do my best to prevent anything horrible from happening?-- Contributed by: Rhiannon
Hi Nickie, and welcome to the site.
At five-and-a-half-months old, your pup may just barely be old enough to sire a litter. Did whoever witnessed the breeding say if the dogs actually tied? If so, the chance your female will become pregnant is even higher.
Right now, there's not much to do but wait and see. You may want to call your vet to discuss the situation and your options about spaying your female. Some vets are willing to spay a pregnant female to end the pregnancy, others wait until after the litter is weaned.
As for the potential litter, even though this would be considered an inbreeding, the pups are often fine if this is the only time an inbreeding took place in their breeding line. You'll want to have your vet thoroughly check any resulting pups for abnormalities before you find new homes for them.
Thanks for your question, and don't hesitate to come back if you need more info. Please feel free to join us at the Dog forum in the Breeder's Corner where we discuss all things related to canine reproduction.
Best wishes that all turns out well. :)
-- Contributed by: KellyMy male acciddentally mated with his mom. He is only 5 1/2 months old I did not think he was old enough to do this. We was out of town and it has been 5 days old. Do you think he could of gotten her pregant and if so what do I do?
-- Contributed by: nickieHi Sara, and welcome to the site.
Accidents happen, and I'm sure your vet has run into this situation before, so don't let that stop you from consulting him or her about the situation. If there hasn't been any other inbreeding in previous generations of your dogs' family, chances are the pups will turn out alright. The mom will do most of the work, but here are a couple of articles that I think will prove helpful.
Once you read through these, don't hesitate to come back with more questions. We'll help in any way we can. :)
-- Contributed by: KellyHi I think that my two ...er cross poodle brother and sister have bred together and I'm really worried firstly because I have no idea how to deal with new born puppies and also what could happen to my dog and her puppies because they are inbred. It was an accident and I'm also worried about what the vet will think. What do I do???
-- Contributed by: SaraHi Heather,
Unfortunately, this happens sometimes. If both littermates are healthy, chances are the puppies will be healthy too. It's not an ideal situation, but you're not the first person to experience it, so please try not to worry too much. When the pups arrive, have the vet give them a thorough examination when they receive their first vaccination. The vet will let you know about any health issues they might have, but as long as this is the only inbreeding that has occured in recent generations, I think the puppies will probably be just fine.
Thanks for your question, and hope all turns out well. :)
-- Contributed by: Kellymy dogs accidentally imbred with eachother and there brother and sister from the same litter should i be worried because i am i could really use some advice
-- Contributed by: heatherHi Briana, and welcome.
This isn't the ideal breeding, but if neither of these dogs has a serious fault and there hasn't been any other inbreeding in the family line, chances are the pups will be alright. Best wishes for a healthy litter.
-- Contributed by: KellyI have a male chinese crested that i believe has bred his daughter which is about 18 months old. I tried everything and thought I had succedded in keeping them apart. Now I believe she is pregnant! What are the risk and will the puppies be ok? I don't want to have her aborted but I also don't want any retarded or deformed puppies.
Please advise............Thanks!
-- Contributed by: BrianaHi Jordan,
Labs are rather hearty, so I think your dog will probably make it through a pregnancy alright as long as you're careful to feed her well and make sure she gets gentle exercise. That said, you will want your vet to examine any puppies she might have to make sure they are free from birth defects due to the inbreeding.
Thanks for your question, and best wishes.
-- Contributed by: Kellyi believe my dog is pregnant by her brother because her nipples have poked out in the past week. I just want to know if she will be all right. She is a Black Lab mix and is 8 months old
-- Contributed by: JordanHi Jenn,
Although this is not the ideal breeding, chance are good that the pups will be alright as long as neither parent has any genetic defects. You can still give the puppies away to good homes, but do disclose that this was an accidental inbreeding. Basically, you can have your vet check each pup when you take them in for their first shots at six weeks. If the vet says they're healthy, you can go foreward with a clear conscience.
Thanks for your question, and best wishes. :)
-- Contributed by: KellyI have a 1 year old black lab. He bred with his mother chocolate lab and she is due in 2 weeks. Im afraid to find homes for the puppies because I dont want to sell or give them away to someone if they get sick. We have the son neutered now. If they are sick what can I do to take care of them. I dont have alot of money. But I do feel that because this is my fault for not taking care of his neutering before I must face the conciquences. I need a little assistance for what I can do. I can't keep the puppies because I'm a renter and the home only allows 2 pets.
-- Contributed by: JennHi Heather,
Although this isn't the ideal breeding, the pups may turn out just fine. There's no need to consider euthanasia unless there is a serious health problem or congenital defect that would severely affect a puppy's life.
My advice is to have the puppies thoroughly examined by your vet between six to eight weeks old when you take them in for their first vaccinations. If the vet pronounces them healthy, you can then feel confident about giving them away to new homes.
Thanks for your question, and I hope this info helps put your mind at ease. Best wishes for a healthy litter.
-- Contributed by: Kellyi adopted a 1 1/2 year olf female pit bull and i think the father might have gotten to her. she is very close to have her litter and i dont know what to do about the puppies! should i have them put down due to them being imbreed? or can i keep them and raise them and eventually give them away?
-- Contributed by: HeatherHi San,
This is not the ideal breeding, but it won't necessarily mean the pups will be deformed. A breeding like this really doubles up on the mom's genes, so if there are any genetic problems in the family line, they are more likely to surface in the pups. However, if mom's bloodline is relatively free of health problems, things will likely turn out alright.
Thanks for your question, and best wishes for a happy ending.
-- Contributed by: KellyHi there! i am so devasted, my black lab(mom)2yrs& yellow(son)9months got accidental inbreed, pls help me. Will this cause deformities? What are the possible effects?
-- Contributed by: sanI have two dachsunds father/daughter that accidentally breed. This is her first heat cycle. I've done everything to keep them apart even went out and bought diapers for her. Will everything be ok with and the puppies?
- Hi Dawn, I can't predict how things will turn out. If there has been no other generational inbreeding, the pups should probably be fine. My main concern is for your bitch. This is her first season, but how old is she? If she's six months, you're going to have to watch out for complications due to her size and own growing needs. If she's closer to a year, there's less risk involved.
Best wishes that all turns out well.
-- Contributed by: DawnHello, I had a brother and sister Pomeranian's mate (accidentally of course never would want that to happen). Well the result of the two breeding with one another turned to have adorable puppies!!! The pregnancy was a great one for the mother and the puppies came out good too! they are now more than 6 weeks old now and I can't keep these adorable pups because I have 9 other babies to attend to, my question is if they did have anything wrong with them would it be in the beginning when they are puppies or later? I don't want either to happen
- Hi Chris,
I'm glad things turned out alright. All you need to do now is ask your vet to check them for congenital defects. If nothing is wrong now, you should be in the clear.
Good luck.
-- Contributed by: ChrisHi Kelly, I am actually going through the same situation as laura and marissa. I have a 1 year old boxer and she got pregnant by her brother. I am stressing so much right now because I don't want my baby to go through any complication. Will the puppies be ok? and will she? will the puppies have any health problems. thank you for your time
- Hi Sheryl,
Although this isn't the ideal situation, there's a good chance that everything will be alright. Provide the best food and care that you can, and read the following articles to help you prepare for the birth.
Don't hesitate to come back if you find you have more questions, and good luck.
-- Contributed by: SherylI am absolut;y devestated I have two blunoze pitbulls they are almost 2 yrs old. they are bro and sis. This is her 3rd heat. I did eventually want to breed her but not with her bro. I have been very dilagent about keeping them apart during her heat cycle but today I turned my back for a minute and they were locked together. I am so worried I hope she did not get pregnant. What does this mean. I feel horrible. Is she going to be ok and what about the pups. Both the dogs are in great health and see vet regularly.
- Hi Laura,
Although the unplanned breeding is unfortunate, the pups will probably turn out just fine if your dog is indeed pregnant. A single inbreeding will not likely result in deformities.
That said, I suggest you have your male neutered so you never have to worry about him breeding your bitch again.
Best of luck, and I'm sure things will turn out alright.
