About Solid Gold Dog Food
Company History
In 1974, Sissy Harrington-McGill traveled to Germany to purchase a Great Dane puppy. On her visit there, she discovered that the German Great Danes lived an average of five years longer than American Danes. Sissy wondered if the difference in the overall health and life span of these dogs might be related to nutrition and brought home some samples of German dog foods along with her new puppy.
After analyzing the dog foods, Sissy went on to develop Solid Gold Hund-N-Flocken (German for dog flakes). This was the beginning of Solid Gold Health Products for Pets, Inc., a company that now offers nine dry dog and cat foods, canned food, treats, supplements and topical products.
Company Philosphy
All of the body's organisms are connected to one another, and when one suffers it can start a chain reaction of ailments throughout the body. It is important to address health issues at their core level. One of the most basic building blocks for good health is appropriate nutrition.
Solid Gold Dog Food believes in caring for the overall health of the whole dog. A solid foundation of good nutrition is the first step in preventing and resolving many health issues such as food allergies.
Solid Gold Dog Food Blends
Great care is taken in the selection of ingredients and the preparation of all Solid Gold products. They contain USDA select meats and grade I and II grains. These steps are taken to insure a quality, premium dog food.
Solid Gold does not use harmful chemical additives such as BHT, BHA or ethoxyquin. Grains such as corn, wheat and soy are also not included in this dog food. Such grains are known allergens, and many dogs are sensitive to them. There are no added animal fats in these dog food products. Saturated animal fats can cause heart disease and certain cancers in dogs just like they do in human beings.
There are several types of dog foods available from Solid Gold:
- Barking at the Moon: A high-protein, low-carbohydrate dog food favored by those who have performance dogs
- Holistique Blendz: A food for less active or overweight dogs
- Hund-N-Flocken: Lamb-based dog food for moderately active dogs
- Hundchen Flocken Puppy: Puppy food made with lamb
- Millennia Beef and Barley: A food for high energy, working dogs
- Wolf King: Large breed dog food made with bison and ocean fish
- Wolf Cub: Large breed puppy food made with bison and ocean fish
- Just a Wee Bit: Bison-based food for small breed dogs
As you can see, there is a type of Solid Gold kibble for nearly every type of dog. Solid Gold puts the same care into their canned dog foods as well, and they come in flavors like Green Cow Tripe, Lamb and Barley, and Turkey and Ocean Fish.
Making the Change
If you wish to change your dog's food over to Solid Gold, do it before you run out of what you are currently feeding. Begin by making his ration consist of three parts of his current food and one part Solid Gold. Do this for a few days, and then move to a half and half mixture for a few days. If your dog is tolerating the change well, you may then move on to feeding three parts Solid Gold and one part of the old kibble. Eventually you can eliminate the former brand and keep you dog completely on Solid Gold.
Some dogs do not seem thrilled about changing dog foods at first. A healthy diet is not always well received by humans either. Switching from pizza to baked chicken and steamed vegetables is not always easy. However, anyone trying to maintain better health will eventually adopt healthier eating habits. If your dog seems a little resistant, adding a little canned food to the dry kibble can help your dog transition from his high-carbohydrate dog food with chemical flavorings to this healthier, holistic diet.

Hi Wellington,
Nutrition plays a significant role in skin condition, so it is possible that the new kibble could have an affect. I recommend you compare the fat content of the new food against your old brand. If the old brand was higher in fat, the kibble might be a factor.
Environmental conditions can also dry out the skin. The hot summer sun can be quite drying, and air conditioning indoors lowers humidity levels. Even the type of shampoo used on a dog and how he is bathed can dry out the skin, especially if a flea shampoo is used. These are all things to consider.
All of that said, it might be helpful to add a few drops of fresh fish oil to your dog's daily dinner. Fish oil is high in Omega-3 fatty acids, and is great for the skin and coat.
Thanks for sharing your situation, and I hope this info helps. :)
