Scented Rocks Deodorizers
From LoveToKnow Dogs
You can make your own Scented Rocks deodorizers to refresh your home from pet smells. Check out these simple and fun recipes from Two Minute Dog Advice columnist Wendy Nan Rees.
Combatting Doggie Odors in Your Home
Sometimes the house can get a definite "doggy" smell, especially when weather doesn't permit opening the windows for fresh air. I love making places smell better, so here are two easy recipes to make natural air fresheners for your home that I like to call "Scented Rocks". These are great projects for bad weather days or a weekend when the kids have nothing to do. Each recipe is very simple and only takes a few minutes to prepare. Scented rocks make great air fresheners.
While I have never tried these for my car, I think they would work well there as long as you test the area your are going to place them first. Try putting one under the front seat (as long as your dog can't get to it). Be sure to place a plastic lid beneath the rock as a coaster to protect the carpet.
Recipes for Scented Rocks Deodorizers
Recipe One
- Mix ½-cup salt and ½-cup flour in a bowl.
- Add ¼ teaspoon of a favorite essential oil, 2/3 cup boiling water and a few drops of a food coloring to create a desired shade.
- Blend all ingredients, form into balls and allow time to completely dry.
Recipe Two
Make a small amount of plaster of Paris (You can buy the mix at any craft store), but substitute liquid potpourri for the water the directions call for. You can easily use silicon bake ware as molds, and they come in hearts, flowers and other fun shapes you might like. Pour the liquid plaster of Paris into the molds, and let it dry completely. Pop the plater out of the molds, and you have attractive scented rocks. Put them in a mesh bag and hang them in your car, your closet or even in a dresser drawer. You might even want to make some for your pet loving friends as part of a doggie gift basket. The possibilities are endless. Bottom line, these deodorizers are useful anywhere odors happen, so have fun making them and soon your house will smell as fresh and sweet as you want it to!
Fragrance Suggestions
I love experimenting with a variety of oil scents. Essential oils usually produce the strongest results, but you can also try blends with your favorite scents. Here are a few suggestions to try.
- Lavender is wonderful when used in the bedroom. Its fresh, light floral scent promotes relaxation.
- Scents like Pumpkin and Apple Pie are especially nice during the fall season.
- Pine and Bayberry compliment your home decorations during the holiday season.
- Lilly and Rose are always wonderful scents to evoke feelings of spring.
- Patchouli is terrific if you prefer a musky spice scent.
I do want to caution you that a number of essential oils and blends can be toxic if ingested, so always be sure to place your scented rocks where your pets cannot reach them.
