Problem: Nuisance Barking
Barking Basset
I adopted a Basset Hound from a rescue in March of 2007. She is about five years old. Every time my husband and I try to get intimate with each other she starts to bark, scratch and jump on us. She becomes very high strung over the situation.
We live in an apartment, so we can't put her outside. We tried shutting the door, but she barks very loudly. We even tried a bark collar, but she has gotten used to it. She gets plenty of attention from us, but this is just so frustrating not knowing how to handle this situation. Please help!!

Hi Lola,
Have your tried dialing up one notch on the bark collar? This may regain her attention and help stop the barking. You also need to begin setting firm boundaries for her outside of the bedroom as well as in it because she doesn't seem to understand her proper place in your family pack.
Never allow her in your bed, even when you just plan to sleep. In fact, start forbidding her in your bedroom even during the day. This will help make the nighttime transition a little easier.
I also think you'll find it easier to establish loving dominance over her by enrolling her in an obedience course. This will teach you how to establish some boundaries and manners with her.
If the barking continues, it may become necessary to have your vet de-bark her. Many dogs have had the procedure, and then the only sound they make is a horse whisper. The procedure is irreversible, so try the training tips first.
I hope you find these suggestions useful and thanks for your question.

Hi Clare,
I think a puppy socialization class might help lessen your dog's anxiety about things in general. The class is designed to get dogs used to seeing new things and meeting new people and other dogs. Perhaps when your dog learns that not everything is worth barking at she'll cut back on it. You can find a class like this at most dog training facilities.
Thanks for you question. :)

If we are out walking she is fine until she sees another dog then she barks again, which usually in turn makes the other dog park i use a pinch coller when we are out but apart from her walking on the lead perfect this hasnt had the same effect on her barking, any sugestions pls!
