Natural Dog Food Premix
From LoveToKnow Dogs
Is a natural dog food premix the answer to your dog's nutritional needs?
Natural Dog Foods
So, it turns out that commercially manufactured dog foods are not immune to contaminants, not even some of the brands that bill themselves all natural. However, preparing home cooked meals for your canine can be a lot of extra work. Isn't there something in between the two extremes that will deliver safe, highly digestible nutrition to your dog in a relatively convenient manner?
The answer is yes. A natural dog food premix bridges the gap between commercial and home cooked foods. A premix typically contains the vegetables and grains needed for rounded nutrition, which means all you need to add to the mix is a protein source.
Recommended fresh protein sources include:
- Chicken
- Beef
- Liver
- Lamb
- Turkey
- Fish
The protein you choose depends on your dog's flavor preferences, but rotating a variety of protein sources keeps the food interesting to your pet and ensures rounded nutrition.
One of the main attractions of a natural dog food premix is that the foods are not heated during processing. Heat processing lowers the nutritional content of most foods by making them less digestible. Beneficial enzymes, probiotics, vitamins, and amino acids are all at risk during heat processing.
A natural premix delivers your dog's food in a state as close to natural as possible, thereby preserving the nutritional content. The flavors are preserved as well, so there's no need to spray extra fat on the food to make it more palatable for your pet.

Hi, I have been usuing Monzies organic muesli mix for dogs for about one year now. I really like it. I have two Italian greyhounds. One of them started having seisures about a year ago. I took her off of commercial dog food and started making it myself and she has not had anymore. She had had two previously. I really think the change in diet has msde a big difference.
I have been wondering about Dr. Harvey's mix also. There is so much in it that I wonder if it could be a problem with causing alergies?
- Hi Regina, thanks for sharing your experience with Monzies. As for the Dr. Harvey's, I have not heard of it causing allergy problems. Admittedly, the fewer ingredients, the less chance of an allergic reaction, but the foods listed in the Harvey brand aren't generally known as allergens. I suppose a dog could still have a specific allergy to one of them, but then that could be true of any brand. It's really all a process of trial and error to find a food that gives your dog superior nutrition without causing problems.
Thanks for your input!

If you click on the bright blue links at the beginning of each brand's section they will either take you directly to the brand's own website, or to a site that sells the product. You'll be able to pursue direct contact from there.
Thanks for your question, and good luck launching your own brand. Perhaps we'll be writing about your dog food some day!
