How to Make Peanut Butter Lolly Pops for Fido
I love this recipe! I got the idea about 15 years ago when I was visiting a friend's pet store. I was designing and creating the first all natural pet bakery in my friend's store in Hermosa Beach.
As I was walking down the aisles, I noticed that they sold a peanut butter lolly pop. I had a light bulb moment and thought, "I can make these fresh, and we can sell them in the bakery". Making a fresh peanut butter lolly pop is really a great idea. It's inexpensive, and if you go back to my tips on how to take a great photo, I use these all the time. I have some other lolly pop recipes that I will offer to you in weeks to come. Today, it's peanut butter!
Here's what you will need:
- One jar of all natural peanut butter, preferably smooth, not chunky.
- A pan: I prefer to use silicone bake ware because the pops release so easily. You can find these pans at any baking supply store, and Target even carries them. You can use any shape you like. I tend to use the little heart-shaped muffin pans, but I've seen pans shaped like dog bones, dog houses, cats, pumpkins and more. You can also use a plastic lolly pop mold if you prefer.
- Sticks: You can use a pressed rawhide stick or any other any stick-type chewable dog treat.
- Non-stick spray
- A plastic storage container
- A microwave safe glass bowl
Directions:
Empty one jar of all natural peanut butter into the glass bowl. Soften it in the microwave on a low setting until it is just thin enough to pour; you do not want to boil your peanut butter. Start off slowly, and keep stirring until you reach the right consistency.
Once your peanut butter is ready, spray your mold with the non-stick spray. Fill each mold with peanut butter until it's three-quarters full. Let the molds sit for five to ten minutes to set up, then add your sticks.
Now, put the molds in the refrigerator for twenty-four hours. This will firm up the peanut butter, and set the stick for you. After twenty-four hours, your lolly pops will easily "pop" right out of the molds. You can store them in your plastic container in the refrigerator, but of course you'll want to serve one immediately!
These pops make wonderfully fun and healthy treats. You can take some great photos of your dog while he enjoys one, and they also make terrific party favors for your next doggie birthday party. Trust me, you'll be the hit of the party, and your pup will be extremely pleased with these homemade peanut butter pops.
