Magnetic Dog Bed
From LoveToKnow Dogs
Magnetic therapy is nothing new for humans, but can a magnetic dog bed to help ease your pet's aches and pains?
What is Magnetic Therapy
Dogs often suffer the same aches and pains as humans due to age and injury, and treatments for their discomfort can be similar as well. Magnetic therapy has been used to speed up the healing process and provide pain relief for centuries. The basis of this therapy is simple. Magnetic fields influence cell interactions with ions, and this actually accelerates the body's ability to heal itself by increasing blood circulation to key areas in the body. The same premise is now used on animals, particularly those who suffer from injuries or advanced age, and the benefits of magnetic beds include the following:
- Increased tissue oxygenation
- Reduced pain
- Increased blood circulation
- Reduced inflammation
How a Magnetic Dog Bed Works
A magnetic dog bed is designed to help dogs that suffer from a variety of ailments such as hip dysplasia (a common problem in larger dogs such as golden retrievers), arthritis and other injuries and muscle problems. Magnetic pads are installed in dog beds to increase blood flow and increase the production of the hormone melatonin to relieve pain in the problem areas of an animal's body. These specially designed beds are believed to help in the healing process.
Magnetic pads, sometimes referred to as "buttons", are strategically placed between the foam layers of the bed to provide maximum benefits each time the dog uses it. Many of these beds are actually simple pads that can easily be moved from one location to another including crates and vehicles.
How to Buy
If you are in search of a magnetic bed for your pet, one of the main points you'll need to consider is the gauss rating of the bed's magnets. The higher the gauss rating is, the deeper the magnetic penetration will be. For large dogs, you might want to consider purchasing a Polar Power bed. These beds are equipped with 100 mini ceramic biomagnets, and each magnet has a 3,950 gauss rating. This is one of the higher rated beds, although large dog beds usually contain around 40 biogmagnets. Smaller magnetic beds typically have approximately half that number.
While the number of magnets is an important point to consider, size and placement are also significant. Magnets work cooperatively to form a circuit that works throughout the body. Many manufacturers recommend that magnets are approximately one inch in diameter, placed approximately four inches apart and no more than one inch from the top surface of the pad.
The following websites offer magnetic beds for dogs:
- Magna Mat uses strategically positioned b-polar, ceramic button magnets between two layers of foam in its orthopedic, magnetic pet beds. Magnetic beds start at $70.00 and go up to around $150.00 depending upon the size.
- Health Magnet USA uses magnets with a 3,950 rating. Their beds feature removable, washable covers as well. Magnetic pads begin at around $41.00 and go up to around $96.00 depending upon the size.

Magnetic beds can be used to help relieve your pet's discomfort. However, if your dog has serious medical issues or appears to be in significant pain, don't try to treat your dog yourself. Contact your veterinarian and make an appointment to have your dog examined. He may need to prescribe medication that could be used in addition to the magnetic therapy you are providing your pet.
