Five different dog breeds

There are 237 breeds listed on the American Kennel Club (AKC) list of dog breeds. The AKC currently recognizes 163 official breeds that are divided into groups. There are 12 breeds that have partial recognition and are listed in the Miscellaneous Class. There are another 62 developing breeds listed as Foundation Stock.

List of Dog Breeds Recognized by the AKC

AKC dog breeds have full recognition from the AKC. Many factors are involved in recognizing a breed, including a national organization, accurate records keeping and the consistent breeding outcomes for many generations.

The AKC divides breeds into groups based on similarities of purpose and characteristics. The Sporting Group, for example, is made up of dogs used for hunting and other outdoor sports. The Toy Group contains small breeds.

AKC Miscellaneous Class

Breeds in the Miscellaneous Class are those that are in the intermediate stage of the recognition process. They are allowed to compete in some AKC competitions.

AKC Foundation Stock Service Breeds

Foundation Stock Service (FSS) list of dog breeds includes those which are rare or newly arrived in the United States. The FSS is a registry for these developing breeds to record the pedigree of the offspring of the stock. This is the first step toward AKC recognition.
