Is Pregnant Bitch's Temperature Normal
From LoveToKnow Dogs
Question: Is Pregnant Bitch's Temperature Normal?
Hi,
My Chihuahua is now almost six weeks pregnant. I took her temperature just to check it, and it was between 98.3 - 99.7. I was just wondering if that was normal for a pregnant Chi, or should I rush her to the vet? I was also wondering when you can hear the babies' heartbeats, and when to get an ultrasound.

Hello,
That temperature is normal, so don't worry over it. Actually it's not necessary to begin taking your Chi's temperature until about day 55. It also isn't necessary to do an ultrasound unless your vet recommends one closer to delivery to count the pups and gage what kind of position they are in.
All things said, it's better not to tamper with your bitch too much from this point on. Just make sure she's getting the nutrition she needs and nature will take care of the rest. There's not much to do now until delivery time, and too much fussing might give your Chi the idea you can do everything for her. This would not be good, and could make for a more difficult delivery.
I'd like to recommend an excellent book to you called The Joy of Breeding Your own Show Dog by Ann Seranne. Ms. Seranne was a long time breeder and dog judge, and even though you're not particularly looking to raise a show dog, the section on dog pregnancy contains the finest information I've ever found on the topic. This book was my manual throughout my first breeding experience, and I think you would find it very useful too.
Thanks for your question.
