Iams Holiday Pet Adoption Drive
From LoveToKnow Dogs
Christmas is drawing near and the annual Iams holiday pet adoption drive is in full swing. LoveToKnow Dogs had the opportunity to speak with Iams spokesperson Sarah Bearce about this very special event and we're pleased to share this conversation with our readers.
The Interview
Sarah, we're so glad to have the opportunity to speak with you about the 2006 Iams' Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption drive. Please tell our readers all about the program.
More families bring pets into their homes during the holidays than at any other time of year. What better gift can any of us give during the holiday season than to give a home to an orphaned animal? Entering its eighth season, the Iams holiday pet adoption drive has placed many needy animals in loving homes.
Helen Woodward Animal Center started the Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption drive back in 1999 with fourteen animal shelters in San Diego County. Since that time, it has grown to include shelters and rescue groups from around the globe with 1,941 shelters participating last year.
This year’s campaign takes place from November 6, 2006, through January 2, 2007. During this year’s pet adoption drive, each new adopting family will receive an Iams adoption kit containing food samples, coupons, and important tips on pet care, behavior, training, and nutrition.
We understand you have a few celebrity spokespersons helping to promote Iams holiday pet adoption drive this year. Tell us more.
This year, Helen Woodward Animal Center will team with Iams, Academy Award-winner Diane Keaton and Kristen Bell, star of the hit TV show Veronica Mars, to encourage prospective pet parents to take a shelter pet home for the holidays.
Kristin had this to say about the drive:
I’m honored to be a part of such an enormous life-saving effort. I applaud all the shelter and rescue groups who have made this program the success that it is. I encourage everyone to consider pet adoption, as I hope it will enhance your life as much as it has mine.
During her childhood, Kristen actually took care of a steady stream of foster pets, giving each a temporary home so they wouldn't have to spend long periods in kennels. Bell is an adoptive pet parent herself to three dogs, including a black Labrador who survived Hurricane Katrina.
How does Iams bring pets and prospective owners together?
Each facility in the network has it's own set of criteria governing adoptions, but Iams Home 4 the Holidays shelters work together to match the needs of the pets with the desires of the families. Everybody wins.
We understand the Iams Holiday Pet Adoption Drive has reached a major milestone?
Yes, the one millionth adoption took place in Milton, Florida. A weary little cat, since named "Lucky", had managed to survive a sixty mile ride from Mobile, Alabama to Pensacola, Florida before it was discovered under the engine hood of a car. The poor little thing had suffered a broken leg and a severed tail, and was taken in at Kirkham Kattery Rescue. Lucky was adopted during recovery, so the story has a happy ending.
Sarah, thank you for speaking with us about Iams' Home 4 the Holidays. We hope this year's pet adoption drive is a smashing success. Do you have any final thoughts you'd like to leave with our readers?
Love and family are so important, especially during the holiday season. No one wants to think about an orphaned animal waking up alone in a cage during Hanukkah or on Christmas morning. Adopting a pet through the Iams Home 4 The Holidays program will truly be a gift that your whole family will cherish long after the holidays are over.
