Ribbon spools

Project: Homemade Dog Ribbon Organizer

Ribbon, Ribbon Everywhere...

This week's tip is about making a storage holder for your dog's hair ribbons. I have a lot of different sizes of ribbons that I use for my Yorkie Cappy's topknot, especially if we are going somewhere special. I do not do this everyday because I am never very sure if Cappy likes this or if he just goes along with it to make his Mommy happy!

I've been on a mission to organize my home, and I came across so many different ribbons I had stored in this great fabric box. My problem is that I have to go get the box out, and then I have to go digging through tangled spools of ribbons to find just the right one for Cappy's hair. If you have the type of dog that can wear a topknot, you'll appreciate how this week's project will help you keep your ribbons clean and organized in one place.

Organizer Directions

  1. Get a large, clean shoe box with a top that fits.
  2. Decorate the box any way you want. You can try gluing scrap wallpaper or fabric to cover your box. You could also use decoupage to cover the lid in a collage of pictures of you and your dog.
  3. Using a sharp knife point, ice pick or eyelet tool, make six to eight holes on each side of the box. Be sure you test your box length to see how many ribbon spools it will let you line up in a row along the inside of the box, and then make that many holes.
  4. Add an eyelet to each hole to give your box a finished look. Make sure you have enough eyelets to cover each hole you make, before you add your ribbon. (You can buy an inexpensive eyelet at any store that sells sewing or craft supplies.)
  5. Once you have covered your box and you have filled every hole with an eyelet, you are ready to fill your box. Note: The eyelets will give your box a very finished look, but please know you can make this organizer without using the eyelets.
  6. Line your ribbon up with each hole, and pull a small bit out so you can see each ribbon you have. Put the lid on your box. You now have a very nice ribbon holder that will store your ribbons while keeping them dust free, and you can see the selection you have to use on the day you want to use it.

I hope you find this homemade project as useful as I have. It's a lot of fun to make, and it really does protect your ribbons and keep them organized so your dog can always look his best.
