Great Pyrenees Rescue
From LoveToKnow Dogs
There are times when a Pyrenees finds itself in unforeseen circumstances and is in need of the services of a Great Pyrenees rescue organization.
The Great Pyrenees
The Great Pyrenees, also known as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog, is an intelligent and elegant breed. One of the oldest of dog breeds in the world, these courageous and loyal canines descended from guardian dogs that protected sheep in Asia more then 10,000 years ago.
These beautiful large dogs make loving family companions with a great love for children. By nature, they are generally well mannered and calm. They are excellent watch dogs and are very protective of their families.
The Need for Pyrenees Rescue
Pyrenees, like most dogs that find themselves in rescue centers, arrive at shelters through no fault of their own. Sadly, many are victims of circumstance that lead the to a need for a new home. A few of the most common reasons include:
- Surrendered, left behind or abandoned due to a move
- The death or severe illness of their guardian
- The birth of a baby into their home, and the resulting inability of their guardians to care for them
- Caretakers not prepared for the grooming needs
- Behavioral issues that usually can be resolved with obedience training or a visit to the veterinarian, including:
- Chewing
- Excessive barking
- Non-aggressive behavior such as jumping up on people
- Difficulty with housebreaking
- Overly energetic or hyperactive
Other Pyrenees come to rescue organizations after being saved from local shelters where they faced possible euthanasia. Some have been rescued from puppy mills, abusive situations or found wandering the streets.
About Great Pyrenees Rescue Organizations
When a dog finds itself at a rescue center for Great Pyrenees, it is cared for until a forever home is found. Rescue organizations and the people connected with them act as the advocates for these displaced, unwanted and abandoned dogs. Their purpose is to find homes that are safe and provide a caring environment for these dogs. The placement may be into either companion or working homes.
Most Great Pyrenees rescue organizations do not discriminate against dogs that are Pyrenees mixes. They are there to find permanent placement for all that need help.
Adopting a Great Pyrenees
Rescue organizations for these giant dogs want to make sure that placement is in the correct home for both the adoptive care givers and the dogs. When possible, a volunteer meets with the prospective guardians to make certain they are aware of the needs of a this breed and make suggestions regarding caring for their new dog. Some require a telephone interview, a home visit and screening of the perspective guardians. Generally, a veterinarian reference is needed and checked.
Most rescue organizations require the new guardians to agree to the following:
- Keeping their dog in a fenced yard, not on a chain outside or tied to a dog house
- Always keep their Great Pyrenees inside when no one is at home
- Never leave the dog outside unsupervised for a long period of time
- Always walk the dog on a leash
Adoption fees go toward helping another Pyrenees in need. Fees generally range from $100.00-$300.00 and are used for costs incurred including:
- Fees to rescue dogs from shelters
- Shots
- Spaying/neutering
- Heartworm screening and prevention
- Flea prevention
- Grooming
