German Shepherd Socialization
Visitor Question
- I have become very interested in owning a German Shepherd Dog. However I am gone from home approximately 10 hours a day 5 days a week. I understand that shepherds need a significant amount of human contact. What are my options? Thank you.

Hi Donna,
My sister actually raises German Shepherds, so I am familiar with the breed. While 10 hours is a long time to be away from home, no matter what type of dog you choose, a well socialized German Shepherd can handle it. And yes, Shepherd puppies require lots of attention to reach their full potential as family pets.
My concern would be how you would find the time to properly socialize and train a Shepherd puppy? Ten hours is simply too long for any puppy to go between potty breaks. My suggestion is that if you have your heart set on a German Shepherd, why not consider adopting an adult dog? Breeders often hang on to show prospects that don't quite pan out, and then they are faced with trying to find homes. You would benefit by getting a well socialized pet, and probably get it for a fraction of the price a puppy would cost. Adult Shepherds can bond with new owners if given the chance. Just something to consider.
Thanks for your question,
Kelly

Hi Jennifer,
Under the cir...stances, I think it would be good to consult with a canine behaviorist. This professional will put together a plan based on observing your dog in person. Since your dog is already two, you may not be able to completely socialize her, but I'm sure that some improvement could be made. Good luck. :)
