Funny Dog Commercial
From LoveToKnow Dogs
Advertisers have relied on the funny dog commercial to sell everything from toilet paper to cars. Dogs are man's best friend, and they are a natural choice for marketing goods to the dog-loving public.
Memorable Funny Dog Commercials
Some of the most memorable ad campaigns in television history were either for dog products or featured dogs as the star of the advertisement. Some of these commercials were amusing because they just showed dogs being dogs, and others made people laugh because they show dogs behaving like humans.
Pups Sell Pepsi
In a recent commercial advertisement for Pepsi-Cola, a very clever Golden Retriever finds a way to get a tasty meal. The human in the commercial has just made a hoagie sandwich when the doorbell rings. When the person leaves the kitchen, the dog enters and takes the sandwich and comes back for the can of Pepsi. A few seconds later comes the surprise ending. The dog returns the empty soda can to the counter, and then places the family cat on the empty plate where the sandwich once was.
Dog as Dog Food Salesman
Who better to sell dog food to humans than a dog? There are many canine commercial actors featured in television ads for dog food and treats. One very entertaining commercial for Kibbles 'n' Bits Dog Food shows the story of a rather glum Bassett Hound making it clear to his family that he wants food that is like the food they are eating at dinner. His wish comes true, and the Bassett "Dance of Joy" will bring a smile to your face.
IKEA Furniture to Impress Your Pet
In an ad that was created to demonstrate how much difference new IKEA Furniture can make, a little Jack Russell Terrier enters his house through a dog door. Although he has entered the house this way many times, he stops and looks around in awe. He then exits the house and looks up at the number on the door to be sure he has the right address. No words are said in this commercial; the little dog says it all.
Pooches in PSAs
One of the most eye-catching anti-smoking public service announcements features an Australian Shepherd smoking a cigarette. He is hiding from his owner who is calling for him to come have his dinner. The dog looks into the camera and with thinly veiled contempt says, "I'm a dog, what's your excuse?"
Commercial Dog Celebrities
Several dogs have become the stars of advertising campaigns. Many of these canine celebrities have reached iconic status and continue to be household names, sometimes even after they have passed away. A few of the most memorable dogs to appear in funny dog commercials are:
- Spuds McKenzie: This dog was the original party animal and the star of many Bud Light Beer commercials. All the ladies loved Spuds, and no party would be complete without this charming and successful English Bull Terrier. It was later known that Spuds may have played a male party animal on T.V., but in real life he was a she whose name was "Honey Tree Evil Eye". This darling dog headed across the Rainbow Bridge in 1993. Spuds still has fans today and will never be forgotten.
- Alex: Stroh's Beer also featured a brilliant dog in a successful advertising campaign, even before Spuds McKenzie became a household name. Alex was a Golden Retriever and Irish Setter mix whose real name was "Banjo". Alex was a brilliant and accommodating canine character, and he was able to help his human party host serve beer to his guests. Alex was also known to surreptitiously take a little sip himself now and then. This is another great dog that is gone but not forgotten.
- The Taco Bell Chihuahua: Another great dog responsible for a successful advertising campaign is a little tan Chihuahua named "Gidget". This little dog was featured in many memorable Taco Bell commercials. The tiny pup inspired toys and buzz phrases such as "Drop the chalupa!" Finally, controversy from Latin Americans brought the Taco Bell Chihuahua's reign to an end. The community felt that the little dog was reinforcing stereotypes. Not wishing to offend anyone, Taco Bell quit airing the commercials. "Gidget" went on to appear in a commercial with the GEICO Insurance gecko, and played the role of Bruiser's mom in the movie Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde.
