Nothing in Life is Free

If you find a free Pitbull puppy, keep in mind that responsible dog ownership is expensive under the very best circumstances. Making sure your puppy is healthy takes money and effort. Consider this before you respond to that "Free to Good Home" ad in the classified section. The average cost of getting a dog through his first year of life is around $1,500 dollars. This is a conservative figure based on the expenses of a healthy, medium-sized dog. The basic needs of most dogs' first year of life include:

  • Food
  • Vaccinations
  • Spaying or neutering
  • Grooming
  • Parasite preventatives
  • Toys
  • Collar and leash
  • Licensing fees

The list is much longer; just keep in mind that your free puppy is going to cost around $150 dollars per month, providing he does not become ill.

Breed Specific Legislation

Pitbulls have a social stigma. Perhaps it is unfair, and possibly a few bad people ruined the reputation of this majestic breed. It does not matter why society generally believes that these dogs are dangerous, the fact is that they do.

Right or wrong, certain communities do not allow Pitbulls. Be sure that you do not live in a community that has adopted breed specific legislation against them. Otherwise, you may cost your Pitbull puppy its life by taking it to a place that may sentence him to death just because of genetics.

Other Considerations for Adopting a Free Pitbull Puppy

Pitbulls are energetic and tenacious dogs. They require daily, rigorous exercise and mental stimulation. If allowed to become anxious and bored, most dogs will become destructive or worse yet, aggressive. Pitbulls are not aggressive by nature, but aggression can be caused by living in inadequate conditions. Be certain that you have several hours per day to devote to your Pitbull pup's needs for exercise and stimulation.

Socialization and Training

A responsible Pitbull owner takes the time to be sure that their puppy is socialized to people, places and other animals early. Obedience training is not optional with these dogs, and not because their behavior is worse than any other type of dog. Basically, it's because society is not going to cut them any slack for nipping a child, or even for defending themselves if attacked. You must train your Pitbull as a puppy, and it is recommended that you continue training throughout his life so that he will listen to you implicitly, no matter what.

Dog to Dog Aggression

Some Pitbulls get along great with all other animals, and they are known to love people. However, it is not unusual for many Pits to be aggressive towards other dogs. Most often, they do not like dogs that are of the same sex. If you already have a dog, keep this in mind before you adopt a Pitbull Puppy.

It is not true that if the puppy grows up with another dog, that they will be lifelong friends. As a dog reaches social maturity around the age of 18 months, real problems can crop up between dogs that have "always gotten along just fine."

So, You Have Decided to Adopt a Pitbull Puppy!

If you have come to the conclusion that a free Pit pup is going to be the perfect addition to your life, here are a few tips for getting off to a good start:

  • Be sure that the puppy is at least eight weeks old.
  • Take the puppy for a veterinary check-up right away.
  • Get started feeding a good puppy food.
  • Ask the vet for advice on parasite prevention.
  • Find a puppy training class, and sign up.
  • Begin crate training on the first day.

Getting off to a good start will help you and your puppy begin a rewarding and enjoyable relationship!

Hi Mariana,

Looking locally is usually the best way to acquire a new pet. That way you can meet the pup in person and take some time to decide if it's the right fit for your family. Good luck with your search. :)
