English Bulldog Information

The Bulldog is a medium-sized dog that weighs 50 pounds or less. The breed was originally bred for bear baiting in the 1500s and was slightly larger. After dog fighting was outlawed in England in the 1800s, breeders started breeding a smaller companion dog. The result was the current English Bulldog, aka Bulldog.

The breed is friendly, gentle and loyal. These dogs fit well in households with children and other pets. They are generally calm and do not get easily excited or bark a lot.

Reasons Bulldogs End Up in Rescue

Most rescue Bulldogs are there through no fault of their own. While behavioral and expensive health problems can land a Bulldog in a rescue organization, most are simply caught up in a bad situation. Many dogs are rescued from puppy mills. Sometimes dog owners don’t do their homework about a breed and find that the Bulldog doesn't fit their lifestyle. Other times a dog is orphaned when the dog's owner passes away.

The Bulldog Club of America Rescue Network is one of the organizations that makes sure a rescue dog finds the right owner and home for a happy and healthy life.

The Bulldog Club of America Rescue Network

The Bulldog Club of America Rescue Network (BCA Rescue Network) is an all-volunteer rescue organization that provides sanctuary to homeless Bulldogs that the group obtains from previous owners, animal shelters and veterinary clinics.

BCA Rescue Network volunteers provide foster homes for dogs and make sure that each dog receives sufficient nutrition and veterinary care as well as love and attention.

Bulldog Adoption Process

When a family applies to adopt a Bulldog from the BCA Rescue Network, they must pass a comprehensive screening and adoption process. A family must first fill out an application. The waiting period for an available rescue Bulldog varies from months to years, depending on the family's location and compatibility.

After the BCA Rescue Network representatives approve the application, they conduct a series of interviews. This may begin with a number of phone interviews and then home visits to assess whether or not the family can provide a good home to a Bulldog. Some situations require BCA Rescue Network representatives to approve the veterinarian that the family plans to use. In apartment dwellings, BCA Rescue Network volunteers may want to speak with the family's landlord to evaluate the building's pet policies and any designated dog potty runs.

BCA Rescue Network representatives will interview each family member and take the dog to visit the home to observe how the family and any existing pets interact with the Bulldog prior to finalizing an adoption. They want to make sure that the dog's temperament matches the family and pets already in the home.

English Bulldog Rescue League Pictures

There are some websites that feature pictures of rescue dogs and include a page with Bulldog pictures claiming to be from the "English Bulldog Rescue League". A few of these sites are questionable and endorse buying pets online and shipping purchased pets.

The Bulldog Club of America Rescue Network never endorses buying a pet online or shipping a pet and does not have any connection to websites or rescue groups that encourage those practices. Avoid doing business with any breeder or rescue group that sells pets online and ships them. Always double-check any rescue group's credentials.

Families who adopt an English Bulldog through The BCA Rescue Network can feel confident that every effort was made to provide a dog that will fit into their home and lifestyle. The rigorous adoption process provides the best chance for a rescue Bulldog to find a loving home.
