English Bulldog Adoption

From LoveToKnow Dogs

The The Bulldog Club of America-Rescue Network is to be admired for the work they do in the area of English Bulldog adoption and rescue. Their website is written in plain and direct language. They know this breed as well as any breeder and they know what kind of individual makes a suitable owner. What is more, like the breed itself, the Bulldog Club of America shows no tolerance towards anyone who cannot meet the specific needs of this wonderful little dog.

English Bulldog Adoption:Why it Is Needed

The appeal of the English Bulldog has undergone somewhat of a revival in the last five to seven years. In fact, this dog lists as number 24 in a recent poll of the Top 25 Dog Breeds in the United States according to the site.

With its small but masculine appearance, pushed in muzzle and rolling gait, the bulldog has become a favorite among people seeking a smaller but sturdy breed, and one suitable for apartment and smaller home environments.

The English Bulldog's usually placid demeanor and affectionate nature makes it the perfect pet for all ages of people. Yet along with its popularity, there has also risen the number of dogs being abandoned and surrendered for adoption. The breed's appearance has caused people to treat it as though it might be trained as more aggressive than its natural inclination is, or to go to the opposite end of the spectrum and become bored with its placidity, giving it up in favor of a livelier breed.

The English Bulldog Personality

English Bulldogs have an almost childlike response to their owners and surroundings. They blossom in a loving home where they are content to be wherever their owners are and to do whatever their owners are doing. They love and need attention. If they do not receive it, English Bulldogs can resort to digging and chewing on virtually anything to get attention.

They require care and attention to their coats, as they are prone to allergies and dermatological skin conditions. They are not joggers or long distance runners, and the site rightly calls them 'sprinters'. They enjoy a good wrestle and tug of war rather than a game of Frisbee catch and will enjoy a nap after every outburst of energy.

Because of their small stature and ability to put on weight, their diet must be watched, and they do have a tendency to develop joint and hip problems. They also are very susceptible to overheating. They cannot be left in a hot car or taken outside once the temperature gets into the 80's.

Is a Rescued Bulldog For You?

An English Bulldog who has been rescued for adoption is seldom free of personality quirks and anxieties. The Bulldog Club of America – Rescue Network takes great care in the placement of these rescue dogs that may require re-socialization with humans and other animals.

Generally, the club does not place rescued English Bulldogs in homes with young children or homes in which the owner travels frequently, or has a multiplicity of pets. The club provides guidelines for treatment of the dog to help them in the transitioning of the dog into its new home and with its new owner.

If you are ready to pour some attention out on a dog, then this might be the adoptive dog for you. It is impossible to give these dogs too much attention and love. They can be obedience trained, and respond well to firm but consistent correction. The bulldog is a great overall family pet but it is not a guard or attack animal. It will generally be a good watchdog putting you on alert to come to its defense!

The Purebred Bulldog vs. The Mixed Breed

The BCA Rescue Network only rescues and adopts out purebred Bulldogs. There are other organizations, including your local ASPCA or Humane Society chapter, who often list English Bulldog mixes for adoption.

Be sure to investigate the background of the dog as much as you can before you accept responsibility for it. Bulldogs bond quickly with their owners and families, and a rescued dog may be that much more anxious and eager to please. Remember, the child-like faith an English Bulldog puts in you is a great gift and should never be betrayed.
