Cooking for Dogs: Doggie Tuna Casserole

Today is as good a time as any to stock up on some fun foods you can make for your dog. I am often asked "Wendy, do you cook for your dogs every day?" I laugh and say I do not have that kind of time. The truth is, I love to cook for the boys, but I try to cook every four to six weeks and freeze the food/treats. I can then pull something out, microwave it and it is ready in five minutes. Another nice surprise for your dogs is to pop in some great fresh fruits and vegetables. They love them, and it is so healthy for your dogs. Most people never think about adding a bit of yogurt or cottage cheese with chopped apples or carrots, and wow, it is one healthy treat!

Here is one of the boys' favorite dishes that I often make. I always this doggie tuna casserole recipe when I have a friend ask me to bring something for their dogs.

Tuna Delight with a Broccoli Bite

This recipe is from No Barking At the Table by Wendy Nan Rees

Now I bet you are surprised by tuna. You're probably thinking, "Oh, she must mean this for cats". No, this is the fun twist. You can make this dish with tuna or canned salmon, both of which are very good for your dogs since they contain Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. Not only that, broccoli is a great source of iron, and cheese contributes natural calcium to the mix. It may take a bit for your dog to become accustomed to the flavor if he's never tasted fish before, but once he does, I promise you he will just love this recipe.

Ingredients

1 ½ cups whole wheat elbow noodles, cooked
1 cup low-fat milk
1 cup mixed cheese, grated (any cheese will work, I use cheddar and Monterey Jack)
1 cup fresh broccoli, chopped very well
8 oz. canned tuna or salmon, drained (Be sure to save the water to make a batch of Pupsicles.)
3 tbsp wheat germ plain
½ cup dried whole wheat bread crumbs (Sometimes I will take their kibble and grind that up to to mix into the meal, it all depends on what you have on hand.)

Directions

Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees.
Spray a casserole dish with non-stick spray.
Blend everything together well in your casserole dish.
Sprinkle bread crumbs or crushed kibble on top.
Bake until cheese is melted and bubbling.
Cool and serve.

This dish will keep in the refrigerator for three days, and if you have any left you can freeze it. However, I would not freeze it for too long because I've never had any left. I usually only make enough for a few days.
