Dog Training Videos
From LoveToKnow Dogs
Dog training videos can be an owner's second best friend.
Dog Training Videos
If taking your dog to a brick and mortar training school just doesn't fit into your schedule, dog training videos are the next best thing to being there. You can follow the instructor on the screen, stop the action, and give it a try with your own dog. Not sure you're doing something the right way? Just hit rewind and review the instructions again. You can't do that once you leave a regular training class.
Dog training videos and DVDs have become so popular that the selection is now very large and readily available to the buying public. You'll find them at most media outlets, pet supply stores, and even in the video section at most department stores. You may even find them on the shelves of your favorite video rental store.
Types and Titles
No matter which type of training you'd like to undertake, you'll surely find a dog training video to match. Let's examine some of the major categories.
Obedience Training
Obedience training videos can help you transform your dog from public enemy number one to model citizen by demonstrating the nuts and bolts of basic commands.
Obviously, if just delivering a firm "sit" command to your dog would get the desired effect, there'd be no need for dog training aids, but since there's no such thing as a "magic word" we have to show our dogs what they should do when we give a specific command. These training guides will show you the best way to teach your dog to carry through on a command, improving your communication skills so you both get the most out of your training sessions.
Useful titles include:
- Leerburg's® Basic Dog Obedience DVD
- Basic Obedience Tape #1 by Andrew Ledford
Clicker Training
Clicker training videos/DVDs could be lumped in with the rest of the obedience offerings, but because the method used is so unique, we'll give these dog training videos their own category.
This type of training makes use of the same basic verbal commands, but a clicker device is used to accentuate the moment when your dog performs correctly, helping him to better connect the command, his actions, and the reward that immediately follows.
Some great titles to get you started with the clicker training method include:
- Clicker Magic written by professional clicker trainer Karen Pryor
- Train Your Dog- The Positive, Gentle Method
Agility Training
Dog agility is one of the fastest growing activities for owners and pets to participate in together. In this sport, both dog and owner work together as a team to complete an obstacle course in the shortest amount of time, and the pace can be downright frantic!
To learn the training techniques and "secrets" for getting a top performance from your canine partner, we recommend the following:
- Jump into Agility from the American Kennel Club
- Competitive Agility Training Series written by renowned trainer Jane Simmons-Moake, this is a four video series which can be purchased separately or as a set.
Field/Tracking
Sporting dogs may be born with basic field and/or tracking instincts, but the right dog training videos and DVDs can help you capitalize on your pet's natural talents.
Useful titles include:
- Training Your Pointing Dog is hosted by top bird dog handler Scott Miller.
- Training Your Retriever is hosted by Bill Eckett and Bobby George of Blackwater Retrievers.
- Total E-Collar Conditioning features trainer Mike Lardy who will help you learn how to properly field train your dog using an electronic dog collar.
Miscellaneous
Feel like teaching your dog to dance, play flyball and Frisbee, or perform tricks? Maybe you'd like to learn more about maintaining your pet's health with therapeutic massage techniques? Perhaps your focus is on teaching your pet to cease annoying/destructive behaviors. You'll find dog training videos and DVDs on these subjects and many more.
Here are titles you might find helpful:
- Dog Aggression: Biting from Dr. Ian Dunbar
- Dancing With Your Dog by Sandra Davis
- Building a Better Flyball Dog - Video by Scott Lucken
- Bodywork for Dogs: Connecting Through Massage, Acupressure and Intuitive Touch by Lynn Vaughn & Deborah Jones
Summary
In short, there are dog videos to fulfill your every training need -- far too many to list in a single article. Just decide what it is that your pet needs to learn and then do a bit of shopping around until you find exactly what you need.
