Dog Is Protective of Pregnant Owner
From LoveToKnow Dogs
What do you do when a dog is protective of a pregnant owner? It's important to restore family harmony, but how do you do it without making your dog feel even more jealous and alienated?
Problem:Dog Is Protective of Pregnant Owner
My friend is pregnant, and her ten-month old Cockapoo is acting like he's her baby's daddy! He doesn't like her son or husband to cuddle her, and he stands between her legs when she's standing. He sits against her tummy when she's sitting or lying down.
He's young, but he's an extremely smart and very loving dog. What can she expect after the baby's born?
Thanks~~ Lorrie

Hi Lorrie,
Dogs can react in very different ways to an owner's pregnancy. Some dogs never seem to notice the change, while others become extremely sensitive to it all. Like your friends dog, some pets become very possessive of their owner and try to keep constant guard over her.
Although such devotion is certainly flattering, it's import that your friend begins to discourage her dog's overly protective behavior now before the baby arrives. If she doesn't, the dog may feel territorial toward the baby as well.
It's important to tell the dog no while still making him feel loved. This way he won't escalate into more neurotic behavior. With patience and firmness, she should be able to help him tone down his act a bit.
Thanks for your question, and please give your friend my best wishes for a safe delivery and a beautiful baby.
