Hi Kim,

I haven't encountered any plans for a duplex style house, but there might be a few out there. I think the main challenge with such a style would be heating it. A typical dog house is built to be just a little larger than the dog that will take shelter in it. This way, the dog's own body heat is trapped inside and keeps the dog warm. A duplex would likely allow heat to escape upward from the lower level, so it wouldn't be as efficient a design.

That's just my opinion. A builder may tell you otherwise. You may want to visit your nearest building supply store to ask about plans and materials. A professional may be able to tell your husband how to modify a plan to turn it into a satisfactory duplex. If you're successful, please come back and share the info.
