Great Dog Food Storage Tip and Recipe

Storing Made Simple

I have found a great new product that is too good not to tell you about! You can use it to store your natural dog food and treats.

If you have ever gone to my web site or have read any of my cookbooks, you know I am a big fan of:

  1. Cooking for your pet and
  2. Using the Seal A Meal® food storage system

I have just found a great new product that does not require you to buy an entire system, find a place to store it and then buy extra expensive bags. It is called The Reynolds® Handi-Vac™. Reynolds is calling it "the easy way to vacuum seal©". Now you can use a sealing system that takes most of the air out of your food before you store it, for a lot less than a Seal A Meal®.

The starter kit costs approximately $10.00, so you start with it and a few bags. After that, all you have to do is buy refill bags sold at every market. I love this because anything you now cook or bake for your dog can be preserved four times longer.

With that in mind, and because Thanksgiving and the rest of the holiday season is upon us, here is a terrific treat you can prepare for your dogs from your holiday meal leftovers.

Turkey Turkey Biscuits

Prep time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups leftover turkey, chopped
  • 2 cups (total) leftover sweet potatoes and any green veggies

(No onions! - These are toxic to dogs)

  • 4 tablespoons Parmesan cheese
  • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (use Thanksgiving leftovers)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 3 tablespoons safflower oil
  • 2 tablespoons dark molasses

Directions

Pre-heat oven to 350°

  1. Spray your cooking sheet with non-stick spray and set aside.
  2. In a blender or food processor, combine your turkey, veggies, oil and egg yolks only (reserve the whites for later). Blend until fairly smooth; some small lumps are fine.
  3. Put the flour and parsley in a large mixing bowl. Now slowly add the blended mixture.
  4. Mix well until you have a dough.
  5. Roll the dough into a log shape, and put into the refrigerator until firm, about 1-2 hours.
  6. When firm, take out and slice into cookies about an inch thick.
  7. Place on cookie sheet, and paint each cookie with the reserved egg white.
  8. Sprinkle some Parmesan cheese on top of each cookie.
  9. Bake at 350° for 25 minutes; turn oven down to 250° and let your cookies bake for another 20-30 minutes. Do not let them get too brown.
  10. Turn off the oven, but leave your cookies inside to dry out. This will take about 3-4 hours.
  11. Store in the new Reynolds® food storage system when completely cool!!

This recipe will make about 30 -40 biscuits.

Happy Holidays!
